5 WPIAL girls to watch at the PIAA Class AAA track and field championships

Here are five WPIAL girls to watch at the PIAA Class AAA track and field championships Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg.

Casey Burton, North Allegheny, sophomore

The sophomore set the WPIAL record in the long jump last week, breaking the mark held by Hempfield's Maddie Holmberg. Burton's jump was 19 feet, 3¾ inches. She is seeded second behind North Penn's Natalie Kwortnik (19-4) at the PIAA meet.

Jayla Ellis, Oakland Catholic, junior

The WPIAL 100 hurdles champion is seeded No. 1 in the state. Her time was 14.12 seconds. Hempfield senior Bailey Traczynski is seeded third in the state. She was the WPIAL runner-up at 14.23.

Mackenna Orie, Hempfield, junior

The junior was the WPIAL discus champion with a career-best throw of 141 feet. She is seeded second in the state in the discus. She also placed second in the WPIAL in the shot put and is seeded sixth in the state with a heave of 40-3¾.

Hunter Robinson, Avonworth, senior

The senior won the PIAA 100- and 200-meter titles in 2017. This season, the WPIAL champion in the 200 and 400 is seeded No. 1 in both events. Her junior sister, Hayden, was the WPIAL champion in the 100 this season and is seeded No. 1 for the state meet.

Savannah Shaw, Upper St. Clair, senior

The WPIAL 1,600-meter champion completed in the Penn Relays. She is seeded second in the state, with a time of 4:50.95. The top seed is Northern freshman Marlee Starliper. Her time is 4:46.86.
