In a WPIAL title game rematch, the Ellis School Tigers won their second straight Class AA crown with a 1-0 triumph over the Shady Side Academy Indians.

The game was very similar to last year’s title tilt and again came down to a second half goal by Ellis School as the deciding factor.

The Tigers had the advantage in penalty corners, 9-3, and had three consecutive corner opportunities to end the first half. Ellis was unable to capitalize on their corner tries before halftime and the game remained scoreless deep into the second half.

With 15:00 remaining in regulation, it appeared Shady Side’s Caroline Benec might have given the Indians the lead when she unleashed a hard shot that reached the back of the Ellis School net. However, Benec’s shot came from outside the circle and was untouched on its way in, disallowing the goal and keeping the game deadlocked.

The scoreless tie remained until the Tigers’ Abigail Stubenhofer fed the ball to Angelina Scheuermann for a goal with 8:57 left to play to give Ellis School a 1-0 advantage.

Despite Shady Side’s desperation efforts to tie the game, Ellis held on for its second straight WPIAL championship and sixth in program history. Since the WPIAL sanctioned field hockey in 1994, 19 of the 22 Class AA titles have been one by either Ellis School or Shady Side Academy.

Ellis School advances to the PIAA tournament and will be in action Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.
