Greensburg Central Catholic girls tennis chasing section title

The Greensburg Central Catholic girls tennis team has been completely dominant through its first 12 matches, with an unbeaten record. In the 60 sets played between singles and doubles, the Centurions have dropped just two, both at second doubles.
“We have had solid play from top to bottom all year,” coach Tony Splendore said. “Experience has led us this far, returning our 1-2-3 singles from last year, and our doubles are improving and building chemistry every match.”
The three singles players, senior Marlayna Verenna and juniors Anna Vitale and Erin Schulte, are all 12-0. Senior Keeley Maloney has been consistent at first doubles, also 12-0, with seniors Rachel Davis and Gabrielle Guzik and junior Claire Hacker as partners.
“We all have worked hard year-round, and our coaches always have us ready for our matches,” said Verenna, who plays first singles. “The chemistry on the team is so strong, which helps all of us. When you are able to trust your teammates it is easy.”
Last year, the Centurions went to South Park with an 8-0 record and the section on the line but fell short, finishing second in the section. This year, they feel it is their turn to take the section title, and they hope to benefit from their experience last year.
“We are loaded with juniors and seniors, so the experience is there,” Splendore said. “These girls have been through every match situation. They are comfortable when they are out there, and it shows. And most importantly, they know how to finish.”
The match against the Eagles will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Greensburg Racquet Club.
“We know the importance of this match, but we want to treat it like any other match,” Verenna said. “We are all confident in our games. As long as we stay focused on being consistent, like we have done all year, we should be fine.”
The match also will serve as senior recognition for Verenna, Maloney, Guzik and Davis.
“We practice and play all of our home matches at the Greensburg Racquet Club, so we do not have to deal with the elements,” Splendore said. “We know the court, and we are confident here. And with it being senior night, I know they will step up.”
“It will be a special day, for sure,” Verenna said. “We know what we have to do, and we just want to stay focused. It is important that we just take it one match at a time. But we will for sure enjoy it.”
Greensburg Central Catholic has dedicated this season to Enrico Campi, who died of a heart attack earlier this year and had helped give lessons to the players at the Greensburg Racquet Club.
