Herald roundup: Fox Chapel boys golf off to solid start

The Fox Chapel boys golf team competed in the Latrobe Garrison Invitational at Latrobe Country Club on Aug. 21. The Foxes posted a score of 382 to beat Central Catholic by four strokes. Medalists for Fox Chapel were Scott Bitar and Grant Thiele, who both shot 74.

Gregor Meyer posted a 75, followed by Andrew Friend at 77 and Aidan Oehrle with an 82.

The Foxes defeated Woodland Hills on Aug. 23, 188-255, in a Section 4 match. The Foxes were led by Oehrle's 36, followed by Meyer at 37, Thiele and Amani Dambrosio at 38 and Friend at 39.

The Chapel Cup was held at the Pittsburgh Field Club on Aug. 24, and Fox Chapel beat Shady Side Academy, 7.5 to 2.5.

Girls golf

The Fox Chapel girls golf team opened up its season with a pair of wins. On Aug. 21, the Foxes edged Butler, 172-176. Hannah Conroy shot a 37 and Cara Levicoff posted a 40 to lead the Foxes. On Aug. 23, they bested Penn-Trafford, 188-193, with Conroy shooting a 38 and Levicoff carding a 45.

Football

The Fox Chapel football team opened up its season at Mt. Lebanon on Friday night. The Foxes, who closed their 2016 season on a five-game winning streak, were 41 seconds away from making it six in a row when Mt. Lebanon's John Naylor scored on a 1-yard run to give Mt. Lebanon a 32-27 win.

Fox Chapel QB Nick Gizzo put up some impressive numbers, as he rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown and had 145 yards passing with 7 completions in 10 attempts and a 56-yard touchdown pass to Cole Waxter.

Andrew Jeffrey was successful on field goal attempts of 31 and 20 yards and had three PATs. Mycah Morris scored on a 1-yard run.

The Foxes will host defending WPIAL Class 5A champion West Allegheny at 7 p.m. Friday.

“Year in and year out, they are one of the top programs in the WPIAL,” FC coach Tom Loughran said. “We have to play four quarters of solid football.”
