High school football roundup: No. 4 McKeesport cruises past No. 2 Upper St. Clair

Layton Jordan rushed for 206 yards and touchdowns of 74 and 64 yards to lead Class 5A No. 4 McKeesport to a 42-14 nonconference win against Class 5A No. 2 Upper St. Clair (6-2).

Jack Hansberry threw for 210 yards and a touchdown for Upper St. Clair.

The Tigers (6-1) have a showdown at Gateway next Friday.

Class 6A

North Allegheny 49, Seneca Valley 14 — Luke Trueman threw for 123 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 99 yards and another score to lead No. 4 North Allegheny (6-2, 4-1) to the Northern Seven Conference win at Seneca Valley (1-6, 1-4).

Pine-Richland 49, Shaler 0 — Phil Jurkovec completed 16 of 19 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns as top-ranked Pine-Richland (8-0, 4-0) shut out Shaler (0-8, 0-5) in the Northern Seven Conference. Jurkovec has thrown for 2,120 yards and 18 touchdowns this season. Kenny White added 113 rushing yards and two touchdowns for Pine-Richland, which outgained Shaler, 554 yards to 100.

Bethel Park 48, Canon-McMillan 16 — Tanner Volpatti ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns and caught three passes for 117 yards and a TD to lead No. 2 Bethel Park (6-1, 4-0) to the Southeastern Conference win against Canon-McMillan (4-4, 2-3). Anthony Chiccitt threw for 280 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Jon Quinque tossed for 116 yards and one touchdown for Canon-McMillan.

Central Catholic 59, Altoona 14 — Troy Fisher threw three touchdown passes — two to Gavin Thomson — and No. 3 Central Catholic (6-2) routed Altoona (2-6) in a nonconference game at Carnegie Mellon.

Fisher completed 5 of 6 passes for 131 yards, including scores of 67 and 23 yards to Thomson, who had three receptions for 103 yards, and 17 yards to Corey Thomas.

The Vikings scored twice on interception returns of 26 yards by Khalil Weathers and 65 yards by Thomson and on a 60-yard punt return by Cam Laconi. They also saw two punt returns for scores called back by penalties.

Class 5A

North Hills 52, Chartiers Valley 14 — In the Allegheny 9 Conference, Melvin Blanks rushed for 200 yards and touchdowns of 19, 54, 83 and 8 yards to lead North Hills (4-4, 3-4) to the win against Chartiers Valley (1-7, 1-5). Reed Bruggerman threw for 110 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.

West Allegheny 24, Hampton 14 — Nico Flati rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 3 West Allegheny (6-1, 5-1) to the Allegheny 9 win at Hampton (2-6, 2-4). Ross Andersson ran for 133 yards and one touchdown to pace Hampton.

Woodland Hills 34, Moon 14 — Anthony Bullock-Merideth rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown as Woodland Hills (5-3, 5-1) beat Moon (3-5, 2-4) in the Allegheny 9 Conference. Jerame Turner picked off two passes for Woodland Hills, which forced three Moon turnovers overall. Cole Konieczka threw for 207 yards and a touchdown for Moon.

Gateway 61, Kiski Area 21 — Brady Walker threw for 405 yards and six touchdowns and surpassed 6,000 career yards to lead No. 5 Gateway (7-1, 5-1) to a convincing Big East Conference victory.

Class 4A

Mars 42, Ambridge 7 — In the Northwest Nine Conference, Teddy Ruffner ran for two touchdowns as Mars (5-3, 4-2) defeated Ambridge (0-8, 0-7). Rob Thompson threw for 119 yards and Ambridge's only touchdown.

South Fayette 62, Indiana 14 — Drew Saxton threw for 114 yards and four touchdowns — all in the first quarter — as No. 2 South Fayette (8-0, 6-0) downed Indiana (1-6, 1-5) in the Northwest Nine Conference. Noah Black caught two scoring passes while Johnny Obenour ran for two touchdowns for South Fayette, which led 56-7 at the half.

Trinity 48, Albert Gallatin 8 — Joey Koroly ran for two touchdowns and caught another in Trinity's Big 9 win over Albert Gallatin (1-6, 1-5). Trinity (4-3, 3-3) scored all of its points in the first half.

West Mifflin 37, Ringgold 13 — In the Big 9 Conference, Parrish Parker rushed eight times for 175 yards and three touchdowns to lead West Mifflin (5-2, 4-2) to victory over Ringgold (3-4, 3-4). Howie Reid added 106 rushing yards and a touchdown for West Mifflin. Caleb Eisel threw for 147 yards for Ringgold.

Class 3A

Keystone Oaks 35, Apollo-Ridge 13 — Backed by freshman quarterback Logan Shrubb's 231 passing yards and four touchdowns, Keystone Oaks erased a 13-0 deficit and went on to score 35 unanswered points to down Apollo-Ridge in an Allegheny Conference matchup.

Junior running back Michale Daure rushed for a game-high 100 yards and wide receiver Tyler Hrivnak led Keystone Oaks (5-2, 4-1) with 86 yards on five receptions, including a 34-yard.

Seton LaSalle 21, Freeport 10 — Fourth-quarter interceptions by Tyler Hillebrand and Dominic Popa set up a pair of Lionel Deanes touchdown runs as Class 3A No. 2 Seton LaSalle (7-0, 6-0) rallied for an Allegheny Conference victory. Deanes rushed for 285 yards and three touchdowns for the Rebels. Austin Romanchak rushed for an 8-yard touchdown and Jake Sarver kicked a 34-yard field goal for Freeport (5-2, 4-1).

Valley 18, Burrell 13 — In the Allegheny Conference, the Vikings (2-5, 2-3) defeated their neighboring rival for the fifth consecutive season behind 111 rushing yards from Deonte Ross and 117 passing yards from Tyler Green. Burrell (1-7, 0-6) was led by Seth Tatrn's 126 passing yards and 98 receiving yards from Alex Bellinotti.

Beaver 35, Hopewell 14 — Amen Cottrill ran seven times for 87 yards and a touchdown as No. 4 Beaver (6-2, 3-2) outgained Hopewell (3-5, 1-3), 306 yards to 163, in its Beaver Valley Conference win. Mason Colvin threw for 103 yards and both of Hopewell's touchdowns.

South Park 39, McGuffey 14 — In the first game played at South Park's Eagle Stadium, Damon Smith threw for 216 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Eagles to victory over McGuffey (5-3, 4-2) in the Interstate Conference. Devin Turner caught four passes for 108 yards and three touchdowns for South Park (4-3, 4-1). Christian Clutter paced McGuffey's offense with 144 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Class 2A

Beth-Center 47, Brownsville 0 — Trevor Anderson ran for two touchdowns and caught another as Beth-Center (7-1, 4-1) shut out Brownsville (1-7, 1-5) in the Century Conference. Bailey Lincosky threw for one touchdown and ran for two more.

Charleroi 37, Burgettstown 14 — Geno Pellegrini threw for a school-record 369 yards and five touchdowns to become Charleroi's all-time leading passer in its Century Conference win against No. 5 Burgettstown (6-1, 5-1). Dakota Romantino also set the single-game school record with 248 receiving yards, giving him the Cougars' career mark as well. Ryan Lounder rushed for 180 yards and both Burgettstown touchdowns.

Washington 54, Chartiers-Houston 14 — Nick Welsh ran five times for 135 yards and touchdowns of 37, 50 and 24 yards in No. 2 Washington's Century Conference victory over Chartiers-Houston (0-8, 0-6). Zack Swartz threw for 143 yards and two touchdowns to Daniel Walker, who caught five passes for 119 yards. Washington (7-0, 5-0) scored all of its points in the first half.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 29, Riverside 28 — Joe Meinert's 13-yard run in the fourth quarter, followed by his two-point conversion pass from Zack Rocco, gave Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (6-2, 5-0) the Midwestern Conference win against No. 4 Riverside (5-2, 5-1). Meinert ran for 111 yards while Rocco threw for 226 yards and three touchdowns. Ben Hughes threw for 151 yards and two touchdowns for Riverside, which led 21-6 in the third quarter.

Mohawk 20, Freedom 14 — Brayden Cameron ran 47 times for 250 yards and all three touchdowns in Mohawk's Midwestern Conference win at Freedom (5-3, 3-2).

Serra Catholic 42, Carlynton 6 — Khalil Smith ran for 97 yards and two touchdowns and Matt Ulishney returned a kickoff 68 yards for a TD as Serra Catholic (5-3, 3-1) beat Carlynton (0-6, 0-4) in the Three Rivers Conference.

Class A

OLSH 34, Union 15 — No. 4 OLSH's defense scored twice in its Big 7 Conference win at Union (6-2, 4-2). Jack Graff ran for 103 yards and two touchdowns for OLSH (6-2, 5-1).

Shenango 47, Cornell 16 — Josh Young ran for 173 yards and two touchdowns, caught two passes for 122 yards and two scores and returned a punt for a touchdown to lead Shenango (3-4, 3-3) over Cornell (0-7, 0-6) in the Big 7 Conference. Maxwell Reamer threw for 157 yards and two touchdowns for Shenango. Cornell was paced by Zaier Harrison, who threw for 164 yards and a touchdown and ran for Cornell's other TD.

Clairton 40, Leechburg 7 — In the Eastern Conference, Brenden Parsons threw for 138 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Tre'sean Howard, as Clairton (5-2, 4-1) earned a victory. Howard also had a 70-yard punt return.

Carmichaels 41, Jefferson-Morgan 7 — In the Tri-County South, Nicholas Mundell rushed for three touchdowns as Carmichaels (5-2, 5-1) beat Jefferson-Morgan (3-5, 2-3). Colten Davidson ran for 131 yards and Jefferson-Morgan's lone touchdown.

Fort Cherry 42, Mapletown 0 — Ryhan Culberson scored on a 69-yard punt return and a 13-yard run and threw for two scores as Fort Cherry (6-1, 3-1) blanked Mapletown (2-6, 1-5) in the Tri-County South. Fort Cherry's defense held Mapletown to 58 total yards and three first downs.

West Greene 48, Monessen 16 — Connor Main scored on a 27-yard pass from Zach Pettit and a 45-yard interception return as West Greene (6-2, 4-2) scored 41 first-half points on way to defeating Monessen (2-6, 1-4) in Tri-County South play. The Pioneers clinched their first playoff berth since 1993.

Bentworth 28, Waynesburg 27 (2OT) — Shawn Dziak hit Ben Peternel with three touchdown passes, including two in overtime, as Class 2A Bentworth (3-5) beat Class 3A Waynesburg (1-6). Nate Stephenson scored his second touchdown of the game in the first overtime for Waynesburg, but Avery McConnville 10-yard scoring pass from Dylan Scritchfield in the second overtime was followed by an unsuccessful two-point conversion, giving Bentworth the win.

California 38, Rochester 6 — Colin Phillips ran for 155 yards and a touchdown and Jelani Stafford added 129 rushing yards and three TDs as Class A No. 2 California (8-0) beat Class A No. 5 Rochester (5-2) in nonconference play.

Imani Christian 20, Frazier 12 — Tawaun Wesley threw for 159 yards and two touchdowns as Class A No. 3 Imani Christian (6-2) beat Class 2A Frazier (1-7). Mason Kelly ran for 106 yards and a touchdown for Frazier.

New Brighton 41, South Allegheny 24 — Ashton Fath ran for 135 yards and three touchdowns to lead New Brighton (2-6) to a nonconference win against South Allegheny (1-6). Jacob Francona caught six passes for 162 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score for New Brighton while teammate Jackson Hall threw for 188 yards and a TD. Brandon Nolder threw for 164 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

Shady Side Academy 37, Avonworth 28 — Skyy Moore threw for 158 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 199 yards and two TDs as Class 3A Shady Side Academy (5-2) overcame an 11-point halftime deficit to defeat Class 2A Avonworth (2-5). Derek Johncour threw for 196 yards and one touchdown to pace Avonworth.
