High school roundup for April 25, 2018: Fox Chapel baseball snaps losing skid

Jonathan Simon made sure Fox Chapel's losing streak stopped.

Simon pitched a complete game, striking out seven, to help Fox Chapel beat Armstrong, 5-1, in a Section 1-5A baseball game Wednesday.

Simon also doubled for the Foxes (5-5, 4-3), who snapped a four-game losing streak. Mitch Miles doubled in a run.

Baldwin 5, Mt. Lebanon 2 — Nick Dolan knocked in two runs to help Baldwin (2-8, 2-6) earn a Section 3-6A win.

Gateway 10, Latrobe 5 Gateway scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to secure a victory over host Latrobe in a Section 3-5A game.

Michael Vojnik had three RBIs, including a run-scoring double in the seventh.

Gateway (9-2, 8-2) opened a 4-0 lead before Latrobe scored twice in the fourth and three times in the fifth to pull ahead 5-4.

Ben Rafferty had two hits and two RBIs, and Griffin Clark had two hits for Latrobe (6-6, 5-5), the defending WPIAL Class 5A champion.

McKeesport 12, Woodland Hills 5 — Jordan Williams was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and Lance Robinson had an RBI double as McKeesport (3-8, 2-7) won a Section 3-5A game.

Ringgold 3, Uniontown 2 — Bob Boyer and Anthony Vavasori each had RBIs as No. 4 Ringgold (9-1, 8-1) won in Section 3-4A.

South Park 9, McGuffey 2 — At Wild Things Park, Mike Kentzel hit a two-run home run, Kevin Vaupel tallied three RBIs, and Tyler Bywalski was 3 for 4 with two RBIs to lift South Park (9-6, 4-5) to a Section 3-4A win.

Vincentian Academy 18, Springdale 1 (3 inn.) — Dylan Hargenrader homered, but Springdale (0-9, 0-7) dropped a Section 1-A game to No. 3 Vincentian. Nate Christian homered and drove in five runs, and Kyler Fedko homered, doubled and had three RBIs for Vincentian (8-2, 5-1).

Softball

Canon-McMillan 12, Upper St. Clair 2 (5 inn.) — Erica Haught, Lindsay Schmidt and Olivia Ulam all homered as No. 3 Canon-McMillan (7-2, 6-2) won in Section 1-6A.

Hempfield 9, Fox Chapel 1 — Maddie Uschock threw a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts as No. 1 Hempfield (7-1, 6-0) won a Section 2-6A game. Allison Podkul was 3 for 3 with two RBIs, and Megan Monzo had two doubles for the Spartans. Emma Humes took the loss for Fox Chapel (4-5, 3-4).

Seneca Valley 11, Shaler 1 (6 inn.) — Karli Hacker had three RBIs and Amanda Magill added two as Seneca Valley (7-3, 5-2) won in Section 3-6A. Claire Zimmerman threw a one-hitter with nine strikeouts.

Penn-Trafford 18, Armstrong 3 (4 inn.) — Carlee Lamacz homered and had four RBIs, and Brooke Cleland homered and had four RBIs as Penn-Trafford (10-2, 9-1) won in Section 1-5A. Becky Mertz and Maura Mallon each went 3 for 4.

Trinity 13, Albert Gallatin 12 — Marlaina Bozek tripled, homered and had four RBIs to guide Trinity (9-5, 6-3) to a Section 2-5A win.

Annalia Paoli was 4 for 5 with two home runs and five RBIs for No. 2 Albert Gallatin (7-2, 6-2).

Girls lacrosse

Latrobe 15, Penn-Trafford 5 — Maddie Stas scored four goals and had an assist to lead Latrobe (5-5, 5-4) to a Section 2-AAA win over Penn-Trafford (3-4, 3-4).

Shady Side Academy 13, Norwin 6 — Magen Polczynski had three goals for Norwin (4-5, 4-5) in a Section 2-AAA loss.

Yough 12, Greensburg Salem 11 (OT)Greensburg Salem (0-10, 0-9) junior co-captain Mackenzie Soriano scored eight goals in an overtime loss to Yough (2-7, 2-7) in Section 1-AA.
