High school roundup for April 5, 2018: McClymonds strikes out 15 for Blackhawk

It might have been just the second game of the 2018 campaign, but Andy McClymonds appears to be in midseason form.

The senior righty tossed a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts to lead Class 4A No. 1 Blackhawk to a 5-0 win over New Castle (0-2, 0-1) in a Section 2 baseball game Thursday.

Carson Gray was 3 for 3 with an RBI for the Cougars (2-0, 1-0).

Hopewell 9, Quaker Valley 1 — Joey Rock threw a two-hitter to guide No. 3 Hopewell (3-3, 1-0) to a Section 2-4A victory.

Thomas Jefferson 5, Latrobe 2 — Mike Huber hit a two-run home run to help Thomas Jefferson (3-2, 1-0) earn a Section 3-5A victory.

Ben Shaw had an RBI triple for Latrobe (2-2, 1-1).

Deer Lakes 1, Derry 0 — In the Section 1-4A opener, Jake McCaskey knocked in a run in third inning to give Deer Lakes (4-1, 1-0) a victory.

Tristen Grimm and Anthony Oshie doubled for Derry (0 -1, 0-1).

Freeport 5, Greensburg Salem 4 — Brodey Cowan and Sean Furlong both tripled for Freeport (1-0, 1-0) in a Section 1-4A win. Cowan had two RBIs and Furlong pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts to one walk. Andrew Rosenberg doubled for Greensburg Salem (0-2, 0-1).

Knoch 13, Highlands 0 — Jack Bartek pitched a three-hit shutout, leading Knoch (2-0, 1-0) to a win over Highlands (0-1, 0-1) in a Section 1-4A contest.

Avonworth 4, New Brighton 3 — Turner Grau tossed a complete game and Tim Stewart hit a two-run home run to lift Avonworth (2-0, 1-0) to a Section 2-3A win.

Brownsville 6, Mt. Pleasant 0 — Dylan Brosky had two RBIs and Brody Bagwell had a run-scoring triple to lift Brownsville (2-0, 1-0) to a Section 3-3A win at Mt. Pleasant (0-1, 0-1). Brosky threw a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts in the win. Jared Wagner struck out six in the loss.

California 10, Chartiers-Houston 2 — Winning pitcher Richie Stimmell had three hits to help California (1 -1, 1-0) to a Section 1-2A win.

Fort Cherry 13, Bentworth 2 (5 inn.) — Hunter Terrach had three RBIs and Jacob Baird had two doubles and two RBIs as Fort Cherry (1-0, 1-0) won in Section 1-2A.

Serra Catholic 15, Bishop Canevin 0 (4 inn.) — Coach Brian Dzurenda won his 300th career game as No. 1 Serra Catholic (5-0, 2-0) cruised to a Section 3-2A victory.

Zach Bowen had a double and three hits and winning pitcher Ben Bowen was 2 for 3 with three RBIs.

West Greene 7, Jeannette 6 — Zack Abbott had two RBIs to guide West Greene (1-0, 1-0) past defending WPIAL champion Jeannette (1-1, 0-1) in the Section 2-A opener. Seth Howard went 3 for 5 with three RBIs and Tre Cunningham was 2 for 2 with three RBIs for the Jayhawks.

Pine-Richland 9, Norwin 1 — Matt Wood homered, and Jacob Weinberg tripled for No. 1 Pine-Richland (4-0) in a nonsection win.

Owen Sabol, Nick Zona, Aiden Shephard, Jayden Walker and Logan Liebdzinski had doubles for Norwin (0-1).

Seneca Valley 2, Penn-Trafford 1 — Andrew Funovitz singled in Anthony Cinicola in the seventh inning to give Seneca Valley (2-1) a nonsection, walk-off victory over Penn-Trafford (1-1). Funovitz earned the win. Ben Mongelluzzo took the loss for the Warriors.

North Star 9, Ligonier Valley 1 — Andrew Kuzemchak and John Caldwell each had two hits but Ligonier Valley (0-1) dropped a nonconference game.

Kiski School 6, Leechburg 2 — Chris Slifer's sixth-inning single to center field scored Jacob Pochiba and Tyler Leech to avoid the shutout as Leechburg (0-2) lost to the Kiski School in a nonsection matchup.

Softball

Peters Township 15, Brashear 0 (4 inn.) — Mirjana Hutnik hit a grand slam and Kate Hondru was 4 for 4 to help Peters Township (3-2, 1-0) earn a Section 1-6A win. Hondru also threw a one-hitter with six strikeouts.

Latrobe 16, Penn Hills 1 (4 inn.) — Sarah Blair was 3 for 4 with a double and five RBIs to guide No. 2 Latrobe to a victory over Penn Hills in the Section 2-6A opener.

Jordan Tallman tossed a one-hitter with nine strikeouts for the Wildcats (1-0, 1-0), who induced the mercy rule in four innings.

Penn-Trafford 12, Gateway 2 (6 inn.) — Emma Nedley was 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs, and Morgan Nedley was 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs to guide Penn-Trafford (1-0, 1-0) to a Section 1-5A victory. Emma Armstrong was 2 for 4 with three RBIs, and Carlee Lamacz was 3 for 3 with a double in the win.

Plum 5, Greensburg Salem 4Plum (2-0, 1-0) scored four runs in the first inning and held off a late rally by Greensburg Salem (1-1, 0-1) to earn a Section 1-5A victory. Gabrielle Fischetti homered and drove in three runs for the Mustangs, Sidney Young doubled and had an RBI and Abbey Froehlich pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts. Sydney Tressler homered for Greensburg Salem.

Elizabeth Forward 2, Belle Vernon 0 — Kailey Larcinse threw a three-hitter with nine strikeouts as Elizabeth Forward (6-0, 1-0) won a Section 2-4A contest.

Bailey Parshall had two hits and threw a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts but took the loss for the No. 2- ranked Leopards (1-1, 0-1), who committed two errors.

West Mifflin 11, Keystone Oaks 8 — Allyssa Schmidt doubled, homered and had two RBIs, and Emma Mackulin and Lauren Yuhas each had three hits to guide West Mifflin (3-0, 2-0) to a Section 2-4A win.

Jessica LaPorte had a homer and three RBIs for Keystone Oaks (2-2, 0-1).

Burrell 12, South Allegheny 1 (6 inn.) — Kayla Santucci belted a grand slam as part of a seven-run fourth inning for Burrell (1-1, 1-0) in a Section 1-3A win at South Allegheny (4-2, 0-1). Lea Coffman went 4-for-4 with a solo homer, a double and 3 RBIs. Cara Fiore had a pair of doubles, and Brittany Dunn pitched six innings with eight strikeouts.

Steel Valley 14, Beaver Falls 1 (5 inn.) — Morgan Farrah was 3 for 3 with two home runs, a double and five RBIs, and Marissa Hoesch homered as Steel Valley (2-1, 1-0) won in Section 2-3A.

Jaylin Brown threw three no-hit innings to earn the win.

South Park 15, McGuffey 5 (5 inn.) — Kaitlin Morrison homered and had three hits to help No. 1 South Park (1-0, 1-0) capture a Section 3-3A victory.

Grace Albitz and Julie Shinavski also had three hits and two RBIs. Jess Dean hit a three-run double.

Southmoreland 18, Charleroi 0 (4 inn.) — Hannah Corvin was 3 for 3 with three RBIs to guide Southmoreland (1-1, 1-0) to a Section 3-3A victory.

Emily Eutsey was 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Bethan Bunner added three hits for the Scotties.

Lexi Klatt tossed two no-hit innings to earn the win.

Waynesburg 11, Brownsville 6 — Bailee Shimek hit a grand slam to guide Waynesburg (3-1, 1-0) to a Section 3-3A victory.

Chartiers-Houston 11, Bentworth 0 (5 inn.) — Kaci Alderson was 3 for 3 with two home runs, and Jaylese Lombardi also homered as No. 2 Chartiers-Houston (2- 0, 1-0) won in Section 3-2A.

Sewickley Academy 11, Western Beaver 0 (5 inn.) — Kamryn Lightcap was 3 for 3 wtih a triple and two RBIs and Kaylee Paterson added a two-run double as Sewickley Academy (1-0, 1-0) won in Section 1-A.

Bishop Canevin 16, Jeannette 6 (5 inn.) — In Section 3-A, Bishop Canevin (1-0, 1-0) tallied 10 runs in the fifth inning to secure a victory. Bree Bazeck had three hits for the Crusaders. Chloe Stein doubled twice for Jeannette (0-1, 0-1).

Ligonier Valley 16, Blairsville 0 (3 inn.) — Jane Garver tossed a no-hitter with eight strikeouts as Ligonier Valley won a District 6 Heritage Conference game in three innings. Garver and Sara Klinchock each had three RBIs.

Ligonier Valley 15, United 0 (3 inn.) — In the second game of a doubleheader, Lexie Petrof threw a two-hitter with seven strikeouts as Ligonier Valley (2-0, 2-0) won in the Heritage Conference. Garver and Abby Turcheck homered, and Taylor Bojtos had three RBIs.

West Shamokin 13, Leechburg 2 (6 inn.) — Kara Kapalka doubled and drove in a run for Leechburg (1-1) in a nonsection loss. Shelby Clowser doubled, tripled and had a pair of RBIs for West Shamokin (1-0). Jaden DeFilippo and Gabby Olinger both doubled for the Wolves.

Boys lacrosse

North Hills 6, Freeport 5 — Braith Kiser scored a pair of goals, but the Yellowjackets (3-2) dropped a nonsection game. Brennon Riley, Caleb Leyland and Garret Schaffhauser added a goal apiece for Freeport, while Gabe Brunck made six saves.

Girls lacrosse

Latrobe 14, Freeport 4 — Raven Dupilka had four goals, and Maddie Stas and Kaylin Kostic each had three as Latrobe (2-3, 2-2) won a Section 2-AAA match.
