High school roundup for Jan. 10: Quaker Valley boys stay unbeaten

Coletrane Washington had eight 3-pointers and 28 points Wednesday night as top-ranked Quaker Valley scored a 69-51 win over Beaver Falls in a Section 2-4A boys basketball game.

Ryan Stowers, Alex Skowron and Danny Conlan all had 12 points for the Quakers (9-0, 5-0).

Noah Vaughan scored 16 points for Beaver Falls (2-9, 2-3).

South Side Beaver 79, Beth-Center 54 — Jake McDougal had 25 points and Logan English tallied 20 as South Side Beaver (5-7, 4-1) won in Section 4-3A.

California 59, Carmichaels 44 — In Section 2-2A, Dru Miller had 19 points and Colin Phillips added 15 as California (7-4, 2-2) earned a victory.

Jeannette 67, Monessen 58 — Anthony Johnson had 22 points as Class 2A No. 3 Jeannette (7-1) earned a win over visiting Monessen (3-6), the No. 5-ranked team in Class A.

Shaler 79, West Allegheny 77 — In nonsection play, Mekhi Reynolds scored 22 points to pace Shaler (7-6) to victory. Dre Baldwin had 19 points for West Allegheny (5-6).

Trinity 75, Upper St. Clair 63 — Zach Ecker had 25 points and 12 rebounds and Steve Schultz added 17 points as Trinity (8-3) won a nonsection game.

Washington 64, Deer Lakes 52 — Brad Perrotte and Marc Vrane both scored 10 points, but the Lancers (6-5) dropped a nonsection game to Washington (7-3). Daniel Ehtridge led Washington with 26 points.

Girls basketball

Freeport 55, Valley 15 — A lockdown defensive first quarter led Freeport to a section girls basketball victory.

The Yellowjackets blanked Section 1-4A rival Valley in the first quarter, building a sizable advantage.

Sidney Shemanski scored 21 points to lead Freeport (5-5, 3-1), which led 14-0 after one quarter and 34-8 at halftime.

Alex Guy and Anna Walkowiak scored four points apiece for Valley (2-9, 0-4).

South Park 68, Yough 17 — In Section 3-4A, Maura Huwalt had 17 points as South Park (6-5, 3-2) earned a win. Rebecca Mlinek had 10 points for Yough (0-12, 0-5).

Chartiers-Houston 76, Shenango 24 — Alexa Williamson scored 35 points to guide Class 2A No. 1 Chartiers-Houston (8-3) to a nonsection win.

Charleroi 54, Steel Valley 37 — Maria Claybaugh had 26 points to pace Charleroi (10-2) in a nonsection victory.

Jeannette 47, Monessen 35 — Dymond Crawford had 18 points, and Chole Stein added 16 as Jeannette (3-9) won a nonsection game. Jahnell Jackson had 10 points for Monessen (1-11).

Latrobe 71, Obama Academy 43 — Laura Graytok poured in 37 points to lead Latrobe (8-2) to a nonsection win.

Winchester Thurston 52, Apollo-Ridge 41 — Gia Thorpe scored 20 points as Class A No. 1 Winchester Thurston put away Apollo-Ridge in nonsection play. Megan Ost led Apollo-Ridge (5-5) with 16 points. Ayanna Townsend scored 10 points for Winchester Thurston (5-3).

West Shamokin 44, Ligonier Valley 17 — Olivia Fusaro had 22 points as West Shamokin (9-3, 4-2) won a District 6 Heritage Conference game.

Lexie Petrof led Ligonier Valley (6-6, 2-5) with six points and nine rebounds.

Wrestling

Franklin Regional 38, Latrobe 31 — Bonus points played a key factor in Wednesday night's Class AAA, Section 1B wrestling showdown between Franklin Regional and Latrobe.

The Panthers posted two pins, two technical falls, a major decision and a forfeit victory to secure a 38-31 win.

Carter Dibert (106 pounds) and Colton Camacho (132) had pins, and Nate Smith (145) and Jimmy O'Neil (170) had tech falls. Mason Spears (138) won a major decision for the Panthers (2-2, 2-2).

Max Sanderback (160), Chayce Zopetti (182), Tyler Ross (195) and Josh DeLong (285) had pins for Latrobe (2-3, 2-2).

Greensburg Salem 51, Norwin 17 — Colt Rubrecht (126), Luke Ewing (160) and Jon Meyers (195) had pins as No. 8 Greensburg Salem (3-1, 3-1) won in Class AAA, Section 1B. The Golden Lions won four bouts by forfeit. Jack Driscoll (132) had a pin for Norwin (3-6, 1-3).

Hempfield 71, Penn-Trafford 3 — Trevor Verkleeren (152) and Justin Cramer (195) had pins for No. 3-ranked Hempfield (14-0, 4-0) in its Class AAA, Section 1B victory. The Spartans won nine bouts by forfeit.

Ethan Berginc (106) won by major decision, and Luke Kemerer (145) won by decision for Hempfield.

John Bachar (182) won a decision for the Warriors (0-4, 0-4).

Kiski Area 78, Penn Hills 6 — The Class AAA No. 2 Cavaliers (9-1, 4-0) won four bouts by pin and nine by forfeit in a Section 1-AAA rout of Penn Hills. Darren Miller (120 pounds), Bobby Lawrence (126), Nick Delp (160) and Danny Starr (195) recorded pinfalls for Kiski Area. DeShawn Butler won by pin at heavyweight for Penn Hills (2-6, 0-3).

Hampton 52, Fox Chapel 12 — Donovan Cutchember tallied a pin for Fox Chapel in a Section 3-AAA loss to Hampton. Juan Morales and Avery Bursick added decision victories for the Foxes. Joshua Campbell, Cory Scherer and Zach Boggs had pins for Hampton.

Mt. Pleasant 43, Southmoreland 24 — Damian George (120), Al Miscovich (138), Kyle Jones (152), Zac Presock (160) and Alex Shafley (170) all had pins to lift Mt. Pleasant (6-3, 3-1) to a Class AA, Section 2B victory.

Chad Miller (132) and Ryan Mauro (220) had pins for Southmoreland (1-3, 1-3).

Yough 36, Frazier 21 — In Class AA, Section 2B, Dustin Stange (170) and Jacob Sever (182) had pins to lead Yough (1-5, 1-3) to victory. The Cougars won four matches by forfeit.
