High school roundup for Jan. 8: No. 5 Mars tops No. 2 Hampton to earn share of section title

The stars were shining bright around Mars on Thursday night, and they helped secure shiny trophies, as well.

Led by Lauren Wasylson's 20 points and 17 from Tai Johnson, No. 5 Mars defeated No. 2 Hampton, 59-52, to clinch a share of the Section 4-5A title with the Talbots.

Alek Johnson added 13 points for the Fightin' Planets (17-4, 11-1), who have won eight straight games since a 54-52 loss to Hampton on Jan. 15.

College-bound standouts Laryn Edwards and Ali Collins added 22 and 21 points, respectively for the Talbots (17-4, 11-1).

Beaver 59, Blackhawk 58 — Bella Posset hit two free throws in the final second to lift No. 4 Beaver () to a Section 2-4A win over No. 2 Blackhawk (). Posset finished with 12 points, and Sydney Barney had 15 for Beaver, which clinched a share of the section title.

Mackenzie Amalia had 21 points to lead the Cougars, who also shared the section title.

Connellsville 46, Uniontown 40 — Sara Aumer had 14 points for Connellsville (11-10, 8-4) in a Section 3-5A win. Mya Murray had 20 points for Uniontown (7-12, 4-8).

Laurel Highlands 59, Albert Gallatin 44 — Taylor Smith's 24 points paced Laurel Highlands (3-19, 2-10) in a Section 3-5A win.

Trinity 48, Ringgold 34 — Class 5A No. 1 Trinity (18-3, 12-0) locked up the Section 3 title with a win over runner-up Ringgold (16-6, 10-2). Alayna Cappelli had 14 points and also surpassed 1,000 for her career for the Hillers.

Deer Lakes 51, Highlands 28 — Emily Mischen scored 16 points, including all 10 of Deer Lakes' first-quarter points, in a Section 1-4A victory. Anna Solomon added 11 points for the playoff-bound Lancers (9-12, 6-6). Renee Cebula led Highlands (2-16, 2-10) with 16 points.

Burrell 59, Valley 25 — Kaylen Sharrow scored 21 points to pace Burrell (6-12, 4-8) to a Section 1-4A victory. Grace Omecinski had 10 points for the Bucs, and Brittany Dunn grabbed 11 rebounds. Anna Walkowiak scored 12 points for Valley (2-19, 0-12).

Central Valley 68, Hopewell 40 — Allyson Kirby had 17 points and Kaelyn Underwood added 15 as Central Valley (15-3, 9-3) won in Section 2-4A.

Belle Vernon 55, Elizabeth Forward 43 — Taylor Kovatch scored 12 points, Rachel Wobrak had 11 and Lindsay Steeber added 10 as Belle Vernon (17-5, 12-2) won in Section 3-4A. Bri Spirnak had 16 for Elizabeth Forward (13-7, 9-5).

Derry 60, Yough 28 — Hannah Wedow had 14 points to carry Derry (2-18, 2-12) to a Section 3-4A win.

Becca Mlinek had 21 points, including five 3-pointers, for Yough (0-21, 0-14).

Mt. Pleasant 41, Southmoreland 36 (2OT) — Colleen Trainer had 10 points for Mt. Pleasant (6-13, 4-9) as the Vikings earned a Section 3-4A double-overtime win. Charity Henderson had 17 points for Southmoreland (12-9, 5-8).

South Park 58, Keystone Oaks 53 — Maura Huwalt had 22 points and Kasey Kastroll added 19 as South Park (13-9, 10-4) won in Section 3-4A, keeping No. 3 Keystone Oaks (17-4, 13-1) from an undefeated section season.

Jaylen Hoffmann had 13 points for the Golden Eagles.

Avonworth 61, Seton LaSalle 48 — Hayden Robinson had 24 points and surpassed 1,000 for her career as Avonworth (15-7, 8-4) won in Section 3-3A.

Bishop Canevin 76, Carlynton 42 — No. 1 Bishop Canevin won its second straight undefeated section title with a win in Section 3-3A. Shamijha Price had 20 points and Diajha Allen added 16 for the Crusaders (16-3, 12-0).

Steel Valley 58, Shady Side Academy 57 (2OT) — Kelsey McCafferty had 22 points for Steel Valley (7-14, 5-7) in a Section 3-3A double-overtime victory. Arianna Goitz scored 26 to lead Shady Side Academy (10-10, 4-8).

Chartiers-Houston 55, Fort Cherry 15 — Alexa Williamson scored 36 points and reached 2,000 points for her career as No. 3 Chartiers-Houston (16-5, 13-1) won in Section 1-2A. The Bucs shared the section title with No. 2 OLSH (19-2, 13-1).

Washington 61, Burgettstown 37 — Carley Allen scored 31 points to guide Washington (13-6, 10-4) to a Section 1-2A win.

Vincentian Academy 81, Ellis School 31 — Caroline Elliott had 18 points and went over 1,000 for her career as No. 1 Vincentian (20-1, 14-0) won in Section 2-2A.

Beth-Center 64, Bentworth 27 — Olivia Greco scored 20 points as Beth-Center (13-8, 8-6) won a Section 3-2A game.

Frazier 66, California 52 — Brooke Poling had 26 points as playoff-bound Frazier (13-8, 9-5) won in Section 3-2A.

Butler 41, St. Joseph 24 — Gia Angelo led St. Joseph (13-9) with seven points in a nonsection loss at Butler (12-8). Alyssa Eyth scored 17 points for the Golden Tornado.

North Allegheny 67, Peters Township 54 — Madelyn Fischer had 18 points and Rachel Martindale added 15 as No. 1 North Allegheny (21-0) won a nonsection game over No. 2 Peters Township (18-3).

Makenna Marisa had 21 points and surpassed 1,000 for her career for the Indians.

North Hills 44, Penn-Trafford 35 — Sydney Ryan had 13 points and Jordan O'Malley added 10 for North Hills (6-15) in a nonsection victory over visiting Penn-Trafford (7-14).

Ligonier Valley 44, Marion Center 42 — Alexia Boyd scored the final eight points in overtime to erase a six-point deficit and give Ligonier Valley a victory over Marion Center (11-10) in a District 6 Heritage Conference crossover game between third-place teams.

Boyd finished with 16 points, to go along with five rebounds, four assists and three steals. She set a single-season record for assists with 120, bettering Maddy Grimm's mark of 116.

Lexie Petrof added 15 points for the Rams (11-11).

Boys basketball

East Allegheny 62, Apollo-Ridge 52 — Olajawon Owens scored 26 points as East Allegheny defeated Apollo-Ridge in Section 3-3A play. Cedric Blackmon scored 10 points for East Allegheny (11-9, 7-3). Kyle Fitzroy scored 20 points and Keighton Reese added 12 points for Apollo-Ridge (5-15, 1-9).

Carrick 62, Obama Academy 57 — Daysean Woodson had 18 points to guide Carrick (18-4, 7-3) to a City League victory. DJ Gordon scored 21 points for Obama Academy (8-14, 4-6).

Derry 71, Blairsville 53 — Conner Watt had 25 points and Justin Huss added 20 as Derry (8-10) won a nonsection game.

Propel Andrew Street 72, Sto-Rox 42 — Dareius Davis scored 30 points to guide Propel Andrew Street (14-5) to a nonsection win.

Quigley Catholic 70, St. Joseph 60 — Andrew Sullivan scored 25 points for St. Joseph (6-15) and Grant Bendis chipped in 14 in a nonsection loss. Zack Cardwell led Quigley Catholic (4-16) with 20 points.

Wrestling

Greensburg Salem 58, Mt. Pleasant 12 — Ian Ewing (145 pounds), Luke Ewing (160) and John Myers (195) all had pins as Greensburg Salem (8-5) won a nonsection match. Doug Bittner (113) had a pin for Mt. Pleasant (8-6).

Norwin 48, Southmoreland 28 — Kurtis Phipps (120), Frankie Gill (126), John Altieri (132), Jason Miller (138), Luke Merkovsky (145), Bryce Long (160) and Armand Detore (195) all had pins as Norwin (7-9) won a nonsection match.

Hockey

Kiski Area 6, Westmont Hilltop 1 — Ryan Hastings and Austin LaPiana scored a pair of goals each, leading Kiski Area to a PIHL Class A win to move the Cavaliers (9-8) into 12th place and the final playoff spot. The Cavaliers are one point ahead of Wheeling Catholic and have three games remaining.

LaPiana had two assists. James Ayres and Dawson Rollinger scored goals and Jonathan Hartill had three assists. Cavaliers goalie Eric Petika stopped 23 shots and recorded an assist.

Meadville 5, Freeport 2 — Nick Frantz scored one goal and recorded three assists in Meadville's Class A win over Freeport. Brendan Leech and Alec Gizzie had one goal and one assist each for Meadville (15-2). Slade Ohl and Connor Hoffman scored one goal each for Freeport (3-15).

Bethel Park 9, Plum 2 — Garrett Legg scored two goals and added two assists, and J.C. Bele scored two goals and recorded three assists as Bethel Park defeated Plum in Class AAA play. Christopher Toth added two goals for Bethel Park (7-8). Nicholas McMasters and Joseph Costa scored one goal each for Plum (5-10).
