High school roundup for May 5: Avonworth upends previously unbeaten Serra Catholic

Avonworth's Tim Stewart scored from third on a wild pitch to give Avonworth (12-4) a 4-3 win over Serra Catholic (18-1) in nonsection action. Jax Miller earned the win for Avonworth, and Serra Catholic's Nate Piontka had the lone extra base hit — a double.

Canon-McMillan 3, Peters Township 1 — Canon-McMillan's Zach Rohaley struck out eight in a complete game, four-hit win against Peters Township (9-9, 6-6) in Section 3-6A. Ian Hess drove in two runs for the Big Macs (12-5, 9-3). Andrew Mottola threw a complete game for Peters Township, giving up six hits and striking out five.

Plum, 16, Fox Chapel 2 (5 inn.) — Tanner Conklin broke open a tie game with a two-run homer in the top of the second inning as Class 6A No. 5 Plum rolled past nonsection rival Fox Chapel in five innings.

Mustangs' pitcher Gino Marra picked up the win, striking out two. Anthony Frazetta hit a two-run homer and Markus Cestra, Ryan Kircher and Brandon Lane each doubled and drove in a run for Plum (12-4, 7-3).

Pitcher Greg Humbert took the loss for Fox Chapel (7-8, 6-5).

Bethel Park 7, Kiski Area 4 — Adam Poleski hit a solo home run, and Billy Perroz doubled and drove in a run but it wasn't enough as Kiski Area lost to Class 6A No. 3 Bethel Park in a nonconference matchup. Corey Fischer got the win for Bethel Park (14-3, 11-1), giving up nine hits and striking out four. Ryan Rametta took the loss for Kiski Area (4-10, 4-8).

Blackhawk 7, Beaver 6 — Andy McClymonds went 3 for 4 with three RBIs to lead Blackhawk (16-0, 14-0) to a Section 2-4A win over Beaver (8-10, 4-10). Marco Borello, who earned the win on the mound, went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, and Zach Zuchelli collected three hits in the win. Vince Mastranglo went 4 for 4 with two doubles, a home run and four RBIs to lead Beaver. Blackhawk advances to their 17th consecutive WPIAL playoffs appearance.

Steel Valley 14, Chartiers-Houston 0 — Alex Ligeros went 3 for 4 with two doubles as Steel Valley (9-5) scored nine runs in the fifth inning in its nonsection shutout at Chartiers-Houston (10-7).

Softball

West Mifflin 17, Woodland Hills 2 — Lauren Yuhas went 3 for 3 with four RBIs as West Mifflin (11-6) defeated Woodland Hills (0-14) in a four-inning nonsection game. Allyssa Schmidt also went 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs for West Mifflin, which scored eight runs in each of the first two innings. Annie Modrick pitched all four innings for the win, striking out four. Woodland Hills committed 10 errors.

Belle Vernon 5, Frazier 0 — In nonsection play, Belle Vernon's Bailey Parshall struck out nine and walked one in a two-hit shutout against Frazier (11-5). Parshall also drove in a run for Belle Vernon (15-2), which won its 11th consecutive game.

Kiski Area 9, Butler 8 (9 inn.) — Kasandra Cessna hit a two-out, walk-off double to left-center field to score Megan Andree from second base and lift Kiski Area past nonconference foe Butler in extra innings.

Kiski Area (9-6, 7-6) jumped out to a 6-3 lead after two innings before Butler (5-11, 1-9) rallied back to take an 8-7 lead in the top of the seventh inning. Courtney Moyer knocked in the game-tying run to send the game into extra innings. Andree picked up the win for the Cavaliers striking out five batters through seven innings, and Alexa Nagy doubled and drove in three runs.
