High school roundup for May 9: GCC caps section schedule with victory

Tom Voelker homered, and Ethan Bailey was 2 for 4 with a double and RBI as No. 4 Greensburg Central Catholic defeated Jefferson-Morgan, 6-2, in a Section 2-A baseball game Wednesday.

Bruce Leonard earned the win for the Centurions (12-4, 11-1), who had 10 hits.

Zack Gamble had two hits, including a double and RBI for Jefferson-Morgan (5-8, 4-8).

Connellsville 5, Kiski Area 4 — Cameron Guercio had two hits, including a double, but Kiski Area (4-11) dropped a nonsection game. Ryne Wallace doubled and scored a run for the Cavaliers. Cade Warrick and Tanner Orndoff had three hits apiece for Connellsville (4-12).

Fox Chapel 12, Seneca Valley 3 — Mitch Miles doubled, singled twice and drove in two runs as Fox Chapel defeated Seneca Valley in nonsection play. Alex Miles doubled and had two RBIs, and Noah Marks struck out five to earn the win for Fox Chapel (9-9). Anthony Cinicola doubled for Seneca Valley (9-10).

Freeport 15, Shady Side Academy 3 (5 inn.) — Sean Furlong tripled, singled twice, scored three runs, and had two RBIs for Class 4A No. 3 Freeport in a nonsection win at Shady Side Academy (6-9). The Yellowjackets (12-3) scored 13 runs in the second inning to break an early 2-2 tie. Furlong pitched four innings and struck out five to earn the win. Matt Charlton singled, doubled and drove in three runs.

Hempfield 6, Laurel Highlands 5 — Luke Hudson hit a walk-off triple that scored Isaiah DiAndreth, propelling Class 6A No. 3 Hempfield (15-5) to a nonsection win over Class 5A No. 2 Laurel Highlands (15-3). Hudson also had a triple. Traynor Granatire and Tommy Katonka plated two runs apiece for the Spartans.

Highlands 4, Valley 1 — Noah Gillette limited Valley to three hits and struck out six in a complete game pitching performance for Highlands in a nonsection win. Zac Kuniak hit a solo homer for the Golden Rams (4-13) and Nick Cichello doubled. Shane Demharter doubled for the Vikings (10-6).

Latrobe 6, Uniontown 0Latrobe (11-8) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, including Ben Rafferty's fielder's choice that plated Connor Mondock with the winning run, to capture a nonsection win.

Griffin Clark doubled and tripled for the Wildcats.

Penn-Trafford 2, Franklin Regional 0 — Christian Pfrogner pitched five scoreless innings and struck out nine to lead Penn-Trafford (12-5) to a nonsection win over Franklin Regional (14-4).

Cade Patterson and Ben Mongelluzzo drove in runs for the Warriors.

Albert Gallatin 5, Carmichaels 3 — Austin Bergman doubled in two runs to help Albert Gallatin (6-13) win a nonsection game.

Bethel Park 3, Chartiers Valley 2 — Sean McGowan knocked in two runs to help Class 6A No. 2 Bethel Park (16-3) win a nonsection game.

North Hills 6, CW North Catholic 2 — Garret Barto was 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs as Class 5A No. 5 North Hills (15-4) won a nonsection game.

Quaker Valley 10, Eden Christian Academy 0 (6 inn.) — Ethan Moore threw a six-inning perfect game with 10 strikeouts to lead Quaker Valley (4-12) to a nonsection victory. Michael Tanabe hit a two-run home run.

Ringgold 13, Yough 4 — Jake Mayer was 3 for 5 with two doubles and five RBIs as Ringgold (14-3) won a nonsection contest.

Softball

Belle Vernon 2, Monessen 0 Belle Vernon's Bailey Parshall threw a one-hitter with 17 strikeouts as the Class 4A No. 3 Leopards defeated Monessen in a nonsection game.

Alex Sokol had two hits and an RBI for Belle Vernon (17-3, 9-3).

Dana Vatakis allowed five hits and had 13 strikeouts for the Class A No. 1 Greyhounds (12-3, 11-1).

Burrell 14, Apollo-Ridge 0 (5 inn.) — Brittany Dunn had four hits, including a double, and pitched four scoreless innings with five strikeouts to lead Burrell (11-4) to a nonsection win. Kelly Nitowski, Cara Fiore, Rikki Wyble and Gabby Britton finished with two hits apiece for the Bucs. Kylee Wynn singled for Apollo-Ridge (6-6).

Butler 8, Armstrong 6 — Makenna Negley was 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs as Butler (6-12) won a nonsection matchup.

Derry 5, Blairsville 0 — Riley Watson singled twice, and Allison Baum doubled for Derry (5-9) in a nonsection win over Blairsville.

Elizabeth Forward 3, Norwin 2 — Kaitlin Fournier homered and had two RBIs, as Class 4A No. 5 Elizabeth Forward (16-3) won a nonsection game.

Alexandra Brentzel hit a two-run home run for Norwin (9-6).

Hempfield 5, Baldwin 1 — Maddie Uschock threw a five-hitter and doubled at the plate to help Class 6A No. 2 Hempfield (16-3) to a nonsection win. Laura Fox also doubled for the Spartans.

Highlands 4, Deer Lakes 1 — Emily Cochran struck out 11 batters, and Sarah Sawhook delivered a two-run double as Highlands won a nonsection game.

Tori Lohler added an RBI double for the Golden Rams (3-9).

Katelynn Blair drove in the only run for Deer Lakes (5-7) with a double, while Makayla Blair tripled.

Hopewell 5, Beaver Falls 4 — Kacey Weller had three hits, and Riley Lewis added two doubles as Hopewell (5-9) won a nonsection game.

Mapletown 10, Fort Cherry 6 — Taylor Vanata was 3 for 4 with a triple to help Mapletown (8-7) win a nonsection game.

Penn-Trafford 11, Connellsville 1 (5 inn.) — Class 5A No. 2 Penn-Trafford (16-3) erupted for six runs in the second inning on its way to a nonsection win over No. 5 Connellsville (11-6). Allie Prady and Mackenzie Smith doubled for the Warriors and Morgan Nedley singled twice and drove in two runs.

Plum 5, Mars 3 Plum (9-9) scored all five of its runs in the second inning on its way to a nonsection win over Mars (10-8). Lindsey Suprano homered and had three RBIs for the Mustangs. MacKenzie Lake had a triple and an RBI and Hannah Blanford doubled.

Seton LaSalle 6, Central Valley 1 — Jada Simon struck out 14 batters, and Lexi Wagner homered for Seton LaSalle (13-2) in a nonsection victory.

Steel Valley 7, West Mifflin 2 — Morgan Farrah had a home run and three RBIs, and Angelina Martin added three RBIs as Steel Valley (11-6) won a nonsection contest.

West Greene 13, Bentworth 3 — Jade Renner had three hits and two RBIs, and Madison Lampe had two hits and two RBIs as Class A No. 2 West Greene (16-4) won a nonsection game.

Ligonier Valley 11, Homer-Center 3 — Sara Klinchock was 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, and Lindsey Stormer had three doubles and two RBIs to lift Ligonier Valley (15-3, 11-0) to a District 6 Heritage Conference win.

Courtney McKlveen and Kelsey Stormer each added two RBIs.

Girls lacrosse

Latrobe 16, Hempfield 5 — Maddie Stas had four goals and three assists, and Erin Grangeorge and Rave Dupilka each had three goals to lead Latrobe (7-8-1, 7-7) to victory.
