Kiski Area sophomore wrestler Jack Blumer made a prediction Friday night after his quarterfinal victory and backed it up Saturday afternoon in the WPIAL Class AAA and PIAA Southwest Regional at Canon-McMillan.

Blumer predicted he was going to defeat No. 1 seed and returning WPIAL champion Luke Kemerer from Hempfield, and he did with a takedown with 30 seconds left in a 4-2 victory at 152 pounds.

That wasn't the only upset in the quarterfinals. At 160 pounds, No. 6 seed Cole Spencer of Pine-Richland followed his upset of No. 3 Trey Howard of Waynesburg by defeating No. 2 seed Ty McGeary of West Allegheny. Spencer, a freshman, secured a takedown in overtime for the 5-3 win.

The other No. 1 seed to fall was Chartiers Valley senior Shamil Zaynullaev, who lost to Connellsville senior Nate Ansell, 8-7.

There were a few upsets of No. 2 seeds.

• Franklin Regional freshman Carter Dibert lost to Seneca Valley freshman Alejandro Herrera-Rondon, 5-1;

• Shaler senior Garrett Reinsfelder fell to Penn-Trafford junior Nick Coy, 8-0;

• Canon-McMillan senior Tim Hritsko lost in overtime to Waynesburg senior Jackson Henson, 3-1;

• Bethel Park senior Jason Montgomery dropped a 7-2 decision to Belle Vernon junior Scott Joll;

• West Allegheny senior Rocky McGeary was beaten by Upper St. Clair junior Jake Slinger, 5-2.

Waynesburg senior Caleb Morris (126) and Albert Gallatin senior Tim Wallace (182) are looking to become three-time champions, while Norwin sophomore Kurtis Phipps (106), North Hills sophomore Sam Hillegas (120), Seneca Valley senior Louis Newell (126), Belle Vernon senior Zach Hartman (160) and Laurel Highlands senior Ian Edenfield (220) are going for their second titles.

The consolation finals are set for 5:30 p.m. and the finals at 7 Saturday.

The top four in each weight class (14) advance to the PIAA tournament beginning Thursday in Hershey.
