If this were a baseball game, you would call it a slugfest. In hockey, it’s call “fire wagon”. In lacrosse, it’s just a plain old fashioned offensive outburst as these two teams combined for 39 goals at Martorelli Stadium in the North Hills in a 21-18 Indians victory.

Peters Township outscored Pine-Richland 14-11 in the second half to capture its fourth WPIAL Division I Girls Lacrosse Championship and it’s first since 2009.

The back-and- forth first half was tied at 7-7, thanks to two late goals by the Indians Sarah Bootman and Allison Hurley.

Peters Township would take command of the second half with four early goals, netting six straight tallies in this contest. Bootman, Rachel Berquist and Hannah Wilcox with a pair put the Indians in charge, or as in charge and comfortable as it could get with an 11-7 lead.

Pine-Richland, who trailed at one point 14-8 and 16-10, would cut the lead to 16-13 at one point and a Hannah Christenson goal with: 27 remaining got the Rams to within two goals of the Indians. But Torrey Schwartz would score as the final seconds ticked off the clock to make the final score Peters Township 21-18.

Ten players in this game would finish with multiple goals. Pine-Richland’s senior tri-captain Drew Hayden would pace all scorers with 7 goals and 2 assists. Wilcox netted 6 goals and 2 helpers for Peters Township. Brittany Byerly, who is headed to Robert Morris University to play lacrosse added six goals and assist for the Rams. Sophomore attacker Allison Hurley scored five times and added an assist for the Indians.

Other multiple goal and point  scorers for Peters Township, Berquist (2G & 2A), Bootman with a hat trick and an assist, Caitlin Carey (2G & 3A) and the senior attacker Schwartz (2G & 1A). Tess Drotar and Hannah Christenson added 2 goals apiece for Pine-Richland in the loss.

With the victory, top seeded Peters Township improved to (17-4) while the third seeded Rams fell to (16-3). Both teams have qualified for the PIAA Playoffs and the Indians and Rams will represent the WPIAL (District 7) in the upcoming state tournament.
