PIAA baseball playoffs roundup: North Allegheny beats McDowell in 8 innings

Colin Cain and Caiden Wood homered in the top of the eighth inning to give WPIAL runner-up North Allegheny a 3-1 victory over District 10 champion McDowell in the PIAA Class 6A first round Monday at UPMC Park in Erie.

Luke Trueman added two doubles for the Tigers (14-11), who advanced to Thursday's quarterfinals where they will meet Canon-McMillan in a rematch of the WPIAL title-game won by the Big Macs, 2-1.

Class 5A

Mars 3, Ephrata 2 (9 inn.) — Tyler Kowalski's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted WPIAL runner-up Mars (16-6) to a PIAA Class 5A first-round walk-off win at Red Lion High School. Kowalski finished 2 for 5. Will Bednar doubled in two runs, and Anthony Michalski had two hits. Frank Craska earned the victory.

West Allegheny 9, Cathedral Prep 5 — Logan Scheider was 4 for 4 with three doubles and four RBIs to lead WPIAL third-place finisher West Allegheny (15-2) to a PIAA Class 5A first-round win at UPMC Park in Erie.

Shea Downing was 3 for 5 with a double and RBI for the Indians, who will play District 3's Red Land in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Seth Rosen allowed six hits with four strikeouts in 3 13 innings. Conner Bartley didn't allow a hit in 3 23 innings of relief.

Class 4A

Hopewell 5, Grove City 0 — Joey Rock threw a three hitter with 15 strikeouts as WPIAL third-place finisher Hopewell (15-10) won a PIAA Class 4A first-round game at Slippery Rock University.

Rock also went 2 for 4. Tyler Beck and Jake McGovern each had RBIs for the Vikings, who will play Ringgold in the quarterfinals.

Meadville 2, South Fayette 1 (8 inn.) — Mitch Dunay was 3 for 4 with two doubles, and Eli Snider had two hits, including an RBI, but WPIAL champion South Fayette (17-6) dropped a PIAA Class 4A first-round game to District 10's Meadville at Washington & Jefferson's Ross Memorial Park.

Richie Dell took the loss for the Lions.

Class 3A

Brownsville 3, Mercyhurst Prep 2 — Dylan Brosky threw a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts to guide WPIAL champion Brownsville (16-2) to a PIAA Class 3A first-round win at Washington & Jefferson's Ross Memorial Park. He also doubled in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth.

Huntingdon 5, Avonworth 2 — Ben Briggs was 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs as Huntingdon defeated WPIAL runner-up Avonworth (16-6) in the PIAA Class 3A first round at Mt. Aloysius. Ryan Felter took the loss for the Lopes.

South Side Beaver 17, Greenville 3 (5 inn.) — Alex Jones had two doubles and four RBIs, and Marshal Windsor had three RBIs as WPIAL third-place finisher South Side Beaver (15-5) rolled to a PIAA Class 3A first-round win at Slippery Rock University.

The Rams will play District 6 champion Huntingdon in the quarterfinals.

Class 2A

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 7, Union City 2 — At Seneca Valley, Danny Lynch was 4 for 4 with a double, triple and RBI, and Joe Jordano had two RBIs as WPIAL champion Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (19-5) won a PIAA Class 2A first-round game.

Nathan Saar homered and Ryan Feczko threw a one-hitter with nine strikeouts for the Trojans, who will play District 6 champion Conemaugh Township in the quarterfinals.

Rocky Grove 5, Neshannock 1 — Travis Perry threw a five-hitter with nine strikeouts as District 10 champion Rocky Grove defeated Neshannock (19-5) in a PIAA Class 2A first-round game at Slippery Rock.

Southern Huntingdon 5, Serra Catholic 4 (9 inn.) — District 6 champion Southern Huntingdon edged Serra Catholic (21-3) in nine innings in a PIAA Class 2A first-round game at Hollidaysburg.

Class A

Homer-Center 6, Union 2 — District 6 champ Homer-Center scored four times in the sixth inning to earn a PIAA Class A first-round win over Union (14-5) at White Township Park.

Vincentian Academy 10, Jamestown 0 (5 inn.) — Danny Morgano was 3 for 3 with a double, triple and five RBIs as WPIAL champion Vincentian Academy (17-4) won a PIAA Class A first-round game at Seneca Valley.

Kyler Fedko was 2 for 3 with a triple, home run and two RBIs, and Aidan Thomson threw a one-hitter with seven strikeouts.
