PIAA baseball quarterfinals roundup: West Allegheny takes down Red Land

Logan Malatak hit a three-run triple, and Trey Zeroski and Brandon Cooper also knocked in runs as WPIAL third-place finisher West Allegheny earned a 7-4 win over Red Land in a PIAA Class 5A quarterfinal baseball game Thursday at Mt. Aloysius College.

Zeroski was 3 for 4, and winning pitcher Austin Hendrick was 2 for 2 for the Indians (16-2), who will play Marple Newtown in the semifinals Monday at a time and site to be determined.

Hendrick allowed four hits and struck out six in 4 23 innings.

Marple Newtown 6, Mars 1 — District 12 champion Marple Newtown held Mars to three hits in a PIAA Class 5A quarterfinal win at Replogle Field in New Enterprise.

Jack Anderson homered, and Rowen Fletcher doubled for the WPIAL runner-up Planets (16-7). Frank Craska took the loss.

Luke Zimmerman threw a complete-game with seven strikeouts for Marple Newtown (23-2).

Class 3A

Brownsville 10, Bald Eagle Area 0 (5 inn.) — Josh Davison threw a two-hitter with six strikeouts, and Trevor Stewart had three RBIs for WPIAL champion Brownsville (17-2) in a PIAA Class 3A quarterfinal win at Slippery Rock. The Falcons scored five times in the fourth and fifth innings to enact the 10-run mercy rule.

Brownsville will play South Side Beaver in the semifinals.

South Side Beaver 5, Huntingdon 1 — Casey Jones allowed five hits and had 10 strikeouts to lead WPIAL third-place finisher South Side (16-5) to a PIAA Class 3A quarterfinal win over the District 6 champion at Somerset.

Nate Statler doubled, and Alex Jones (2), Marshal Windsor and Jake McDougal had RBIs for the Rams.

Class 2A

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 5, Conemaugh Township 0 — At Peterswood Park, Ryan Feczko hit a three-run double in the fifth inning to help WPIAL champion Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (20-5) claim a PIAA Class 2A quarterfinal win.

The Trojans will play District 10 champion Rocky Grove in the semifinals.

Class A

Vincentian Academy 10, Oswayo Valley 0 (5 inn.) — Stephen Turzai threw a four-hitter with two strikeouts, and Aidan Thomson was 2 for 3 with five RBIs as WPIAL champion Vincentian Academy (18-4) won a PIAA Class A quarterfinal at Showers Field in DuBois.

Kyler Fedko hit a three-run home run for the Royals, who will play Greensburg Central Catholic in the semifinals.
