The 2010 WPIAL Girls High School Tennis Singles Championships were held Friday afternoon at Pine-Richland High School with bright beautiful sunshine and a strong blustery wind. For a fall day, the girls had no worries of rain or cold temperatures, but the wind was a problem all afternoon. However four girls were able to withstand the winds and win their matches championship and consolation matches.

In the AAA championship defending champion Ronit Yurovsky from Plum high school took on number one seed Sara Perelman. In the first set Yurovsky dominated with strong ground strokes pushing Perelman left and right and forcing her into mistakes and easily winning 6-0. "I had a game plan with my coach to just get the ball over the net and not make mistakes, I knew the wind would be a big factor, said Yurovsky after the match. In set number two Perelman came on strong and led 3-2 limiting her errors and pushing Yurovsky to the limit. But her strong play could not hold off the defending champ as Yurovsky would come back to win 7-5. In the AAA consolation match Stephanie Smith of Peters Twp was matched against Callie Frey from Mount Lebanon. Their match would go three sets and take 2 and 1/2 hours to finish but it was a back and forth affair. Smith took the first set 7-6 (7-5) in the tiebreak, but would lose set two 4-6.Frey looked to have the edge but Smith came on strong and won set three easily 6-0 to finish in third place. Both Yurovsky and Perelman will move on and enter the PIAA state playoffs in two weeks.

In the AA championship match the third place finisher from 2009 sophomore Spencer Caravaggio from Quaker Valley took the first set with ease over 2008 champion Sara Sahura from Brownsville by a score of 6-1. In set two Caravaggio was down 2-1 and looked to be in some trouble but pushed back Sashura and easily cruised to a 6-3 victory." The wind was crazy and really affected my game today, but I adjusted and found a way to win " said Caravaggio. In the consolation match Freshman Samantha Gohh from Sewickley Academy won in three sets over Elise Carter from South Park 6-4.3-6 6-0. The first two games were back and forth and long games, but in game three Gohh just wore Carter out. Gohh, Caravagio, and Sahshura will move on to the PIAA state finals in two weeks.
