SHIPPENSBURG — Seneca Valley senior Zach Gehm saved the best for last.

The Youngstown State recruit broke his personal best by throwing 194 feet, 8 inches Saturday to win the Class AAA discus at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Seth Grove Stadium.

Gehm earned three medals Friday and Saturday. He placed eighth in the shot put Friday with a heave of 50-7 and then finished fifth in the javelin Saturday morning with a throw of 186-6.

“I'm so excited,” Gehm said. “I started crying after I broke the record. Now I'm happy, it's amazing.”

He beat his personal best by five feet.

“It was so exciting,” Gehm said. “I got everyone clapping for me.

“I actually broke my record on my first throw of the competition and I kept on beating it. The five feet came on my final throw. I had a game plan and I accomplished it. I hit my bigger throws at the end. It was a great way to end my high school career.”
