SHIPPENSBURG – At this time last year, Marco Maffeo wasn’t thinking about winning a triple jump title at the state track championships.
“I didn’t even know what triple jump was,” he said with a laugh.
The South Park senior joined the track team this season after a coach’s suggestion, and Saturday celebrated a state title at the PIAA track and field championships. Maffeo jumped a personal-best 46 feet, 2½ inches in the Class AA competition, breaking the school record by a half-inch.
He out-jumped silver medalist Senior Gyamfi of Church Farmby more than a foot.
“I was just hoping to get above 45 to get first place,” Maffeo said, “and when I heard I got the school record, I was so happy.”
