Highlights of the week ahead in Westmoreland high school sports:

MONDAY

Softball

After lengthy runs in the WPIAL postseason, a half-dozen local teams will open the PIAA playoffs.

Hempfield (20-3) begins its quest for a third consecutive state title when the Spartans take on Warwick (17-6) in a Class 6A game at 5 p.m. at Latrobe's Graham-Sobota Field. Hempfield just won its fourth WPIAL title in a row.

• Also in 6A, Latrobe (12-4) faces District 3 champion Central Dauphin (16-5) at 4:30 at Millersville University.

• Defending PIAA Class 4A champion Mt. Pleasant (17-1) takes on District 10 champion Slippery Rock (17-2) at 4 p.m. at Allegheny College in Meadville, and WPIAL champion Belle Vernon (21-3) faces District 6 champion Bellefonte (15-3) at 2 at Peters Township.

• In Class 3A, first-time WPIAL champion Southmoreland (10-7) meets District 6 runner-up Central Mountain (13-5) at 5 p.m. at North Allegheny, and Monessen (15-4) faces District 10 champion Cambridge Springs (10-8) at 2 at Penn State Behrend in Erie in Class A.

Baseball

Greensburg Central Catholic (14-6), the lone county team in the state playoffs, will play Dubois (16-6) at 5:30 at Kuntz Field in Punxsutawney in a Class A opener.
