Westmoreland high school roundup: Mt. Pleasant takes down Frazier

Mt. Pleasant combined three pins and five wins by forfeit to earn a 48-12 victory over Frazier in a Class AA, Section 2B match Wednesday night.

Damian George (106 pounds), Kyle Jones (145) and Zack Charlesworth (195) won by pinfall for the Vikings (4-3, 1-1).

Alex Poorbaugh (132) and Thayne Lawrence (160) had pins for Frazier (0-2, 0-2).

Belle Vernon 44, Thomas Jefferson 21 — Ian Maloney (132 pounds), Zach Hartman (160), Scott Joll (170), Mason Nickelson (182), Chad Metikosh (220) and Logan Petrosky (285) all had pins as Belle Vernon (2-0, 2-0) cruised to a Class AAA, Section 2A victory. Thomas Jefferson (1-1, 1-1) won twice by forfeit.

Derry 77, Southmoreland 6Derry improved to 9-0 overall and 2-0 in Class AA, Section 2B with a win over Southmoreland (1-1, 1-1).

Elizabeth Forward 57, Yough 20 Yough forfeited five weight classes en route to a Class AA, Section 2B loss. Anthony DeMarco (138), Dustin Strange (170), Robert Davis (182) and Jake Sever (195) won for Yough.

Boys basketball

Latrobe 71, Penn-Trafford 60 — Bryce Butler scored 27 points, Reed Fenton added 14 and Marcus Dudzenski chipped in 11 to lead Latrobe (4-2, 1-1) to a Section 3-6A win.

Latrobe led 41-29 late in the third quarter before the Warriors (2-4, 0-1) cut the margin to 59-53 with 2:20 to play in the fourth.

Latrobe salted it away at the free throw line, making 13 of 17 attempts in the fourth quarter.

Sean Kelly led Penn-Trafford with 18 points and Kevin Stinelli had 13.

Derry 48, Burrell 46 — Conner Watt had 24 points, six steals and five assists in leading Derry (4-1) to a nonsection win. He had four 3-pointers in the win. The Trojans hit four free throws in the final minute to clinch the victory.

Jeannette 50, Mt. Pleasant 25 — Tre Cunningham scored 15 points and A.J. Sharp added 13 as Jeannette (2-0) won a nonsection game. Jeannette led 31-13 at halftime. The game was halted as freshman guard Nathan Kubasky was carted off on a stretcher after an injury.

Yough 83, Geibel 56 — Jarett Bach scored 26 points and Danny Gibler added 19 as Yough (2-6) won a nonsection game. Gamal Marballie had 16 points for the Cougars.

Girls basketball

Blairsville 46, Ligonier Valley 14 — Rena Enterline had 17 points as Blairsville (5-0, 3-0) won a Heritage Conference game. Lexie Petrof had eight points for Ligonier Valley (2-4, 1-3).

Men's college basketball

Baldwin Wallace 77, Saint Vincent 60 — In Orlando, Fla., Mike Simmons had 11 points and Jason Capco added 10 but Saint Vincent (6-4) lost a nonconference game.

Women's college basketball

Bethel 64, Saint Vincent 51 — At the Daytona Shootout in Florida, Mara Benvenuti had 16 points and eight rebounds but Saint Vincent (6-5) lost a nonconference game. Benvenuti has 999 career points.
