Westmoreland high school sports lookahead: Week of Oct. 2, 2017

MONDAY

The WPIAL girls tennis team tournament continues with semifinals in Class 3A and 2A.

In Class 2A, top seed Neshannock faces Knoch at Butler, and Sewickley Academy takes on Greensburg Central Catholic at Shady Side Academy. Both matches are at 3 p.m.

In Class 3A, No. 1 North Allegheny meets Shady Side Academy at Pine-Richland, and Mt. Lebanon opposes Pine-Richland at North Allegheny. Those matches also begin at 3 p.m.

TUESDAY

The WPIAL Class 3A boys golf championship tees off at 9 a.m. at Nemacolin Country Club in Washington County.

Four golfers enter the 18-hole event shooting under par in the semifinals. They are Franklin Regional junior Palmer Jackson at 4-under (68), Shaler senior Tanner Grzegorczyk at 3-under (69) and Central Catholic junior Neal Shipley and Peters Township senior Hunter Bruce, each at 1-under.

Fox Chapel junior Gregor Meyer is the returning champion.

Others to watch include Latrobe junior Brady Pevarnik, Central Catholic junior Jimmy Meyers, North Allegheny senior Luke Minsky and Thomas Jefferson senior Adam Rossi.

WEDNESDAY

The WPIAL Class 3A and 2A girls championship tees off at 8:30 a.m. at Diamond Run Golf Club.

Mars senior Natalie Welsh had the best qualifying score coming into the tournament. She shot a 2-under-par 70.

Others to watch include Pine-Richland junior Lauren Freyvogel and North Allegheny juniors Caroline Wrigley and Christina Lewis. Wrigley is the returning champion.

The returning champion in 2A is Central Valley junior Kiaria Porter. Sewickley Academy junior Tatum McKelvey comes in with the best score, a 76. Runner-up Maddie Smithco of Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic also returns.

• Also, the WPIAL girls team tennis championships will be held at a site to be determined.

THURSDAY

Norwin (4-1) and Connellsville (3-2) meet in a big Class 4A Section 3 girls volleyball match at Norwin.

• In Class A, returning WPIAL and PIAA Greensburg Central Catholic (5-2) has a key battle at home against Vincentian Academy (5-3).

FRIDAY

There are a few big matchups in football.

• At Murrysville, Franklin Regional (4-1, 3-1) hosts to Penn-Trafford (6-0, 4-0) in the Class 5A Big East Conference.

• Norwin (3-3, 2-2) tries to rebound from a tough loss at Mt. Lebanon (4-2, 3-0) in a Class 6A Southeastern Conference game.

Derry (5-1, 3-1) visits Mt. Pleasant (2-4, 1-3) in a Class 3A Interstate Conference tilt. This is a rivalry game for both squads.
