Westmoreland look ahead: March 26-31, 2018

Highlights of the week ahead in Westmoreland high school sports:

MONDAY

Baseball

With the opening weekend of the season wiped out by snow and cold temperatures, teams will try to open the year as field conditions improve.

As with the start of any spring season, schedules could be temperamental early.

Greensburg Salem travels to Latrobe to play the Wildcats on the turf at Graham-Sobota Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Greensburg Central Catholic at Steel Valley (3:30) and Norwin at the City League's Allderdice (7) are other nonsection matchups.

Softball

A number of area teams are scheduled to play, including Yough against James Madison Memorial at 10 a.m. in Orlando, Fla. Yough will close a five-day trip.

Closer to home, Jeannette hosts Greensburg Central Catholic (3:45 p.m.), Greensburg Salem goes to Derry (4), North Allegheny is at Penn-Trafford (4), and Norwin visits Gateway (4:15).

TUESDAY

Baseball

Local games include Greensburg Salem at Mt. Pleasant, Southmoreland at Yough and Norwin at Indiana, all at 4 p.m.

Softball

Section 1-5A opens with Armstrong visiting Greensburg Salem and Woodland Hills at Penn-Trafford. Belle Vernon at Keystone Oaks gets things started in Section 2-4A.

Latrobe travels to Indiana for a nonsection game.

All games start at 4 p.m.

Boys tennis

Franklin Regional visits Hempfield in a Section 1-AAA match.

WEDNESDAY

Baseball

North Allegheny at Penn-Trafford (4 p.m.) highlights a thin nonsection schedule, and Southmoreland goes to Greensburg Salem (4).

Girls lacrosse

Penn-Trafford hosts Fox Chapel, and Norwin is home to Freeport in a pair of Section 2-AAA matches.

THURSDAY

Baseball

Moon visits Norwin in a nonsection game at 4 p.m.

Softball

Franklin Regional plays host to Kiski Area in another Section 1-5A opener (4 p.m.), and Penn-Trafford travels to Plum in another.

Other games to watch include West Mifflin at Belle Vernon (Section 2-4A), Albert Gallatin at Hempfield (nonsection), and Norwin at Seneca Valley (nonsection).

Boys volleyball

In Section 3-AAA, Hempfield visits Penn-Trafford.

SATURDAY

Boys basketball

The first ITPS #CancerSucks Charity Classic, a senior showcase, will be played at Chatham..

Former Southmoreland standout Brandon Stone, a 6-foot-11 player from Christ School (N.C.), will play in the event.

There are three games, beginning at 2:30 p.m., plus slam dunk and 3-point contests.

Tickets are $10 for an individual game or $30 for the day.

Doors open at 11:30 a.m.

Proceeds benefit cancer research.
