WPIAL AA wrestling championships resume at Canon-McMillan

WPIAL wrestling titles will be decided Saturday at the AA individual tournament at Canon-McMillan High School.

Twelve wrestlers in each weight class, the top four advancing Friday from each of the three AA section tournaments, will do battle for WPIAL medals, titles and the opportunity to move on to the PIAA Southwest Regional next weekend at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

The top seven at each weight from Saturday's action will punch their tickets to regionals.

WPIAL officials made a quick transition from the end of the section tournaments at about 9:45 p.m. Friday and released the WPIAL brackets early Saturday morning.

They can be viewed by selecting “WPIAL AA Championships” in the events menu at arena.flowrestling.org. The brackets will be updated as the action happens.

The opening rounds kick off at 11 a.m. with the semifinals and second round of consolations set for 3 p.m..

The Parade of Champions will be at 6:45 p.m., and the consolation and championship finals will be at 7.

Jefferson-Morgan senior Gavin Teasdale is going for his fourth WPIAL title. He is seeded first at 126.

Other returning WPIAL champions, with their 2017 weight class included, are Burrell sophomore Trent Valovchik (106), Bentworth senior Manny Dovshek (113), McGuffey junior Jett Pattison (120), Southmoreland senior Tyler Griffiths (132), Frazier sophomore Thayne Lawrence (138), McGuffey junior Christian Clutter (160), Freedom junior Bryson Miller (195) and South Side Beaver senior Bishop McCoy (220).

Griffiths, seeking his third WPIAL championship, is the top seed at 145.

Freedom junior Z.J. Ward captured the 106-pound title in 2016. He earned one of the four byes this year in the 126 bracket.
