WPIAL alums named to PAC softball all-star teams

The Presidents Athletic Conference announced its 2018 softball all-star teams and annual award winners Wednesday, and numerous WPIAL alums filled the lists.

Selected to the first team were Waynesburg catcher Rachel Skon (sophomore, Brashear), St. Vincent first baseman Shelby Noel (senior, Latrobe), St. Vincent outfielder Kelly Flaherty (junior, Brashear), Thiel designated player Vanessa Falce (sophomore, McKeesport) and St. Vincent utility player Alona Sleith (freshman, Yough).

Second team selections included Grove City catcher Liz Scherer (sophomore, North Allegheny), Washington & Jefferson first baseman Danielle Kochka (senior, Gateway), Geneva second baseman Madison Schultz (freshman, Seneca Valley), St. Vincent shortstop Lauren Miller (freshman, Shaler), Geneva third baseman Marina Manuppelli (freshman, Mars), Geneva outfielder Haley Sainato (junior, Mohawk), Thiel outfielder Leah Woytek (sophomore, Mohawk), St. Vincent designated player Emily Duerr (junior, OLSH), Washington & Jefferson pitcher Taylor Andres (junior, Bethel Park) and Bethany pitcher Cassie Weiss (senior, Avella).

Those tabbed as honorable mentions were Grove City first baseman Miranda Griffith (freshman, Chartiers Valley), Thiel second baseman Alexa Fike (senior, Franklin Regional), Washington & Jefferson shortstop Meghan Staab (senior, Keystone Oaks), Westminster outfielder Nikki Anderson (senior, Riverview) and Washington & Jefferson designated player Jamie Smith (senior, Bethel Park).

Several others were presented the PAC Sportsmanship Award “established to recognize student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through demonstrated acts of sportsmanship and ethical behavior and is an ongoing effort to both recognize and encourage positive sportsmanship among all conference teams.”

This year's award winners are Grove City outfielder Erin Frohlich (sophomore, Shady Side Academy), St. Vincent outfielder Morgan Murphy (senior, Woodland Hills), Thiel outfielder Leah Woytek (sophomore, Mohawk), Waynesburg infielder Ashley Duborich (sophomore Albert Gallatin) and Westminster second baseman Alexa Owrey (senior, Shenango).
