WPIAL football roundup: Pine-Richland rolls past rival Seneca Valley

Phil Jurkovec threw for 254 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two more scores to lead top-ranked Pine-Richland to a 42-7 victory over last year's WPIAL runner-up, Seneca Valley (0-2, 0-1), in a Class 6A Northern Seven Conference game Friday night.

Jurkovec has thrown for 931 yards and nine touchdowns through three games. Raymond Falcone caught five passes for 148 yards and three touchdowns for the Rams (3-0, 1-0), who led 42-0 at halftime.

Bethel Park 28, Peters Township 7 — John Doleno ran 14 times for 202 yards and an 83-yard touchdown in No. 3 Bethel Park's Southeastern Conference win at Peters Township (2-1, 0-1). Doleno added a receiving touchdown while Tanner Volpatti ran for two TDs for Bethel Park (2-0, 1-0).

Class 5A

Fox Chapel 22, Woodland Hills 21 — Quarterback Nick Gizzo scored to tie the game on a 3-yard option run with 43 seconds left, and Andrew Jeffrey converted the winning extra point for Fox Chapel in an Allegheny 9 game at the Wolverena. Micah Morris led the Foxes (1-2, 1-1) with 174 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries, Gizzo ran for 93 yards on 19 carries, and Jeffrey converted field goals of 26 and 23 yards. For Woodland Hills (1-2, 1-1), Rodney Dennard ran for 103 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, and Jayquan Smith scored on a 27-yard run and a 17-yard interception return. The Wolverines had a chance to win on the final play, but Charles Hanchett's 43-yard field goal attempt fell just short.

Upper St. Clair 41, Moon 10 — In the Allegheny 9 Conference, Upper St. Clair's defense scored on three interception returns in a win over Moon (1-2, 0-1). Jesse Ferra scored on interception returns of 12 and 35 yards while Colin McLinden picked off two passes, returning one 45 yards for a score. McLinden added two rushing touchdowns and Dom Cepullio caught four passes for 147 yards and a touchdown for Upper St. Clair (2-1, 1-0).

Gateway 50, Connellsville 8 — In the Big East 9 Conference, Brady Walker completed 10 of 13 passes for 258 yards and three touchdowns as No. 3 Gateway (3-0, 2-0) scored all of its points in the first half on way to defeating Connellsville (1-2, 0-2). Isaiah Cameron ran for 116 yards and two touchdowns and caught three passes for 69 yards and two more TDs.

McKeesport 21, Armstrong 7 — Carlinos Acie ran for 154 yards and two scores to lead No. 5 McKeesport (1-1, 1-1) to the Big East 9 win at Armstrong (2-1, 0-1). McKeesport, which gained all of its yards on offense by running the ball, outgained Armstrong, 226 yards to 96.

Class 4A

Ringgold 17, Albert Gallatin 8 — Brenden Small ran for 116 yards and one touchdown as Ringgold (1-1, 1-1) defeated Albert Gallatin (0-2, 0-2) in the Big 9 Conference.

Thomas Jefferson 35, Trinity 0 — Sophomore Shane Stump threw for 189 yards and three touchdowns to lead top-ranked Thomas Jefferson (2-0, 2-0) to the shutout over Trinity (0-2, 0-2). Thomas Jefferson was held to just seven points in the first half before scoring four touchdowns in the third quarter. Justin Vigna rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns.

Mars 32, Blackhawk 0 — Charles Green scored on an 85-yard touchdown run as he rushed for 165 yards on just four carries and Mars (2-1, 1-1) shut out Blackhawk (0-2, 0-2) in the Northern Nine Conference. Garrett Reinke added 111 rushing yards and three touchdowns while Teddy Ruffner gained 92 rushing yards on only three attempts.

Montour 51, Indiana 14 — Kavon Morman threw for 192 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score to lead No. 4 Montour (2-0, 2-0) over Indiana (0-2, 0-1) in Northwest Nine Conference play.

South Fayette 47, Ambridge 7 — Drew Saxton threw for 178 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score to lead No. 2 South Fayette (3-0, 2-0) to a Northwest Nine win against Ambridge (0-3, 0-2). The Lions led 40-0 at halftime.

Class 3A

Freeport 31, Deer Lakes 0 — Conor Selinger rushed for 94 yards and two second-half touchdowns as the Yellowjackets (2-0, 1-0) pulled away for an Allegheny Conference victory over Deer Lakes (0-2, 0-2). Freeport's defense posted five sacks and forced two turnovers, with Garrett Schaffhauser recovering a fumble for a touchdown.

Seton La Salle 37, Valley 14 — Lionel Deanes rushed for 212 yards and a touchdown and Matt Banbury added 137 yards passing and three scores as the No. 3-2A Rebels (2-0, 2-0) rallied to beat Valley (0-2, 0-2) in an Allegheny Conference contest. The Vikings' Tyler Green threw for 195 yards and tossed touchdown passes to Shawn Demharter and Darius Johnson. Valley led 14-0 in the second quarter.

Shady Side Academy 42, Burrell 8Shady Side Academy dual-threat quarterback Skyy Moore rushed for four touchdowns and threw for another to lead the Indians past Burrell (1-2, 0-1) in an Allegheny Conference matchup. Moore finished with 101 yards rushing and 102 yards passing for Shady Side Academy (1-1, 1-1). Indians' wide receiver Dino Tomlin finished with four catches for 102 yards and one touchdown.

Aliquippa 30, Beaver 10 — Eli Kosanovich threw for 121 yards and two touchdowns as top-ranked Aliquippa (3-0, 2-0) beat Beaver (2-1, 0-1) in Beaver Valley Conference play. Aliquippa's defense limited Beaver to 66 yards of offense.

Class 2A

Bentworth 54, Chartiers-Houston 6 — Shawn Dziak threw for 147 yards and three touchdowns to lead Bentworth (2-0, 2-0) to a Century Conference win at Chartiers-Houston (0-3, 0-1). Seth Mitchell caught two scoring passes for Bentworth, which scored 26 points in the first quarter.

Beth-Center 20, Frazier 7 — Dominic Fundy ran for 153 yards and Bailey Lincoski added 109 yards rushing and 64 passing as Beth-Center (3-0, 1-0) beat Frazier (0-3, 0-2) in Century Conference play.

Washington 68, Brownsville 7 — Nick Welsh ran for 138 yards and four first-half touchdowns as No. 2 Washington (2-0, 2-0) downed Brownsville (0-3, 0-2) in the Century Conference. Dylan Asbury added 186 rushing yards and a touchdown and Zach Swartz threw for 101 yards and a TD for Washington, which led 60-0 at halftime.

Freedom 28, New Brighton 7 — Kyle Borgman ran 30 times for 154 yards and two touchdowns and he recorded 13 tackles on defense to lead Freedom (2-1, 1-0) to the Midwestern Conference win at New Brighton (0-3, 0-2). Jackson Hall threw for 218 yards and a touchdown for New Brighton.

Riverside 35, Laurel 0 — Ben Hughes threw for 241 yards and three touchdowns as No. 5 Riverside (1-1, 1-0) blanked Laurel (0-3, 0-2) in the Midwestern Conference. Austin Dambach caught six passes for 154 yards and three touchdowns for Riverside, which limited Laurel to only three first downs and 60 yards of offense.

East Allegheny 33, Brentwood 19 — Tamaine Underwood threw for 203 yards and two touchdowns as No. 3 East Allegheny (2-1, 2-0) beat No. 4 Brentwood (2-1, 1-1) in the Three Rivers Conference. Michael Trent threw for 212 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

Steel Valley 35, Avonworth 7 — In the Three Rivers Conference, Kameron Williams ran for 129 yards and two touchdowns to lead top-ranked Steel Valley (2-0, 1-0) to victory at Avonworth (1-1, 1-1). Trevon Adams caught three passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns from Tre Karfelt, who threw for 126 yards. Derek Johncour completed 26 of 39 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown to pace Avonworth's offense.

Class A

Rochester 28, Summit Academy 18 — In the Big 7 Conference, Caleb Collins ran for three touchdowns as No. 4 Rochester (2-0, 2-0) defeated Summit Academy (0-2, 0-2). Antonio White scored twice for Summit Academy, including on a 90-yard kickoff return.

Union 33, Northgate 0 — Tre Chalres rushed for three touchdowns and Union (3-0, 2-0) blanked No. 5 Northgate (1-1, 1-1) in Big 7 Conference play. Jason Pasquarello added a touchdown on a 70-yard interception return. Eric Hogan tossed for 111 yards in the loss.

Western Beaver 35, Cornell 16 — Jeddy Young ran for two touchdowns and Zack Altenbaugh scored on a blocked-punt return as Western Beaver (3-0, 2-0) defeated Cornell (0-2, 0-1) in the Big 7 Conference. Tamir Fished ran for 101 yards and a 72-yard touchdown in the loss.

Clairton 32, Springdale 8 — Tre'sean Howard scored on a 9-yard run, an 11-yard TD reception and a 40-yard interception return to lift No. 1 Clairton (2-0, 2-0) to an Eastern Conference win.

California 86, Avella 13 California (3-0, 2-0) scored 66 points in the first half on way to beating Avella (0-3, 0-2) in the Tri-County South. Jelani Stafford scored three touchdowns for the Trojans, who have scored 202 points through three games this season.

West Greene 42, Mapletown 12 — Zach Pettit ran for 183 yards and three touchdowns as West Greene (3-0, 2-0) rushed for 306 team yards in its Tri-County South win at Mapletown (1-2, 0-1). Pettit also threw for 122 yards and three touchdowns. In the loss, Dylan Rush ran for 118 yards, breaking Derek Bochna's school record of 4,793 career rushing yards. Rush also scored both Mapletown touchdowns, giving him the school record for points with 450, breaking Bochna's mark of 446.

Apollo-Ridge 27, Beaver Falls 19 — The Vikings (3-0) knocked off the defending WPIAL and PIAA champs behind quarterback Kyle Fitzroy's 121 rushing and 74 passing yards in a nonconference game. Freshman Logan Harmon ran for two touchdowns. Beaver Falls (0-2) was led by Dayln Brickner's 85 rushing and 88 passing yards.

Burgettstown 34, Bishop Canevin 0 — Ryan Lounder completed four passes — all for touchdowns — for 100 yards to lead Class 2A Burgettstown (2-0) to the shutout over Class A Bishop Canevin (0-2). Jarred John caught two of Lounder's scoring passes.

Butler 45, Altoona 28 — Luke Michalek rushed for 149 yards and four touchdowns to lead Butler (1-1) to a nonconference win against Altoona (1-2). Braeden Burchfield, who threw for 177 yards, connected with Cam Fasick on three scoring passes for Altoona.

Central Valley 42, Elizabeth Forward 26 — Nico Battisti threw for four touchdowns and ran for two more as Class 3A No. 2 Central Valley (2-1) beat Elizabeth Forward (1-1) in nonconference play. Danny Santia caught two of Battisti's scoring passes. Gavin Martik scored twice for Elizabeth Forward, including returning a fumble return 99 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.

Keystone Oaks 42, Carlynton 0 — Class 3A Keystone Oaks (2-0) outgained Class 2A Carlynton (0-2), 340 yards to 21, in its nonconference shutout victory. Michael Dauer rushed for 132 yards and four touchdowns, and Logan Shrubb threw for 150 yards and a TD.

Penn Hills 33, Canon-McMillan 17 — Hollis Mathis threw for 232 yards and four touchdowns to lead Penn Hills (3-0) to a nonconference win against Canon-McMillan (2-1). Dante Cephas caught nine passes for 136 yards and three touchdowns, and teammate Dylan Bennett scored on a 60-yard interception return.

Quaker Valley 43, Neshannock 6 — Ricky Guss threw for 156 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 128 yards and two TDs to lead Class 3A Quaker Valley (3-0) to the win at Class 2A Neshannock (1-2). Jordan Taylor added 131 rushing yards and one touchdown each rushing and receiving for the Quakers.
