WPIAL softball playoffs roundup for May 23: No. 11 Thomas Jefferson upsets Albert Gallatin

Haleigh Karcher and Lily Rockwell had RBI singles in the top of the eighth inning to guide No. 11 Thomas Jefferson to a 2-0 victory over No. 2 Albert Gallatin (12-4) in the WPIAL Class 5A semifinals at Boyce-Mayview Park.

Bella Bucy threw a six-hit complete game with three strikeouts for the Jaguars (13-5), who will play No. 1 West Allegheny in the championship game set for May 30 or 31 at Seton Hill.

West Allegheny 7, Connellsville 2 — The No. 1 Indians (19-1) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning and rolled to a WPIAL Class 5A semifinal win at Baldwin.

Ashley Seamon was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and also earned the win by scatting seven hits with two strikeouts. Brooke Miller was 3 for 4 with two doubles for the No. 5 Falcons (13-7).

Class 3A

South Park 14, Avonworth 1 (5 inn.) — No. 1 South Park (15-1) put up 10 runs in the first inning en route to a WPIAL Class 3A semifinal win. Kaitlyn Pavlick was 2 for 2 with two home runs and six RBIs, and winning pitcher Jess Dean was 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs for the Eagles, who will play No. 3 Southmoreland in the championship game.

Class 2A

Frazier 8, Mohawk 4 — Defending Class 2A champion Frazier (16-5) plated half of its runs in the first inning, dropping No. 4 Mohawk in the WPIAL semifinals at West Allegheny.

The Warriors (15-2) squandered an early lead by committing two errors in the opening inning. Pitcher Trinity Voss threw one of two illegal pitches in that frame to swing the advantage to the Commodores. Logan Hartman pitched a complete game for Frazier, allowing three earned runs while striking out seven. At the plate, Hartman drove in a pair of runs on sacrifice flies.

Megan Celaschi had three hits and brought in a run for Frazier, while Lauren Mastowski hit a solo home run. Robert Morris recruit Madison Shiderly finished a triple shy of the cycle and drove in three runs for Mohawk.

Laurel 9, Chartiers-Houston 5 — No. 6 Laurel scored six runs in the first inning, knocking out Chartiers-Houston pitcher Kaitlyn Dittrich, and held on to topple No. 2 Chartiers-Houston at West Allegheny.

Maddie Boyd pitched a complete game for the Spartans (12-3), striking out 10 while allowing five runs. Makenzie Latess and Morgan Patterson each homered and drove in three runs for the Spartans, while Alyssa Miller brought in a pair. Kasey Scears and Kaci Alderson each hit solo home runs for the Bucs (16-3) in the loss.

Laurel will meet defending Class 2A champion Frazier in the title game.

Class A

West Greene 8, Union 2 — Madison Lampe was 3 for 3 with two home runs, a double and four RBIs as No. 1 West Greene (18-4) won a WPIAL Class A semifinal at Peterswood Park. Madison Renner homered and had two RBIs, and Jade Renner threw a four-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Shae-Lynn Quinn and Sarah Seamans homered for No. 4 Union (16-2).

West Greene will play No. 2 Monessen in the WPIAL championship.
