The heat sheets for both the WPIAL AAA and AA championships were released to the WPIAL website Thursday morning , paving the way for teams and individuals to prepare for next week's championship finals.

WPIALs will be May 17 at Baldwin High School.

Coaches had a 4 p.m. deadline Wednesday to submit all of their individual and relay times, heights and distances. The WPIAL track and field committee then finalized the performance lists and organized the heats. WPIALs is a no-scratch meet, and all qualifying entries at the deadline must compete.

On Tuesday, athletes had a final chance to record performances good enough to qualify for WPIALs at one of four last-chance meets, either at Norwin, West Mifflin, Shenango or Pine-Richland high schools.

At most, 16 will compete in each Class AA event, while the top 24 will be in action for Class AAA. All ties that extend beyond the 16 or 24 limit have been eliminated.

One single competitor can compete in a maximum of four events at WPIALs. Each team can have a maximum of three individual entrants and one relay per event.

Both the field and track events at WPIALs will begin at 1 p.m.

The top five finishers in each Class AA event and top four in Class AAA automatically qualify for the PIAA championships May 25 and 26 at Shippensburg University.

Also, individuals or relays placing eighth or better will qualify to states if their time, height or distance is equal to or better than the qualifying mark established by the PIAA.
