Tis the season for one-day showcase events.

The trend in high school basketball in recent years is for teams to participate in one-day events for various causes held on Saturdays in December and January.

One of those events takes place Saturday at Hempfield and will feature seven boys basketball games as part of the Westmoreland County Coaches Association Showcase.

There will be two games in two gyms tipping off at noon, 1:45 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. The day will conclude with a 5:15 p.m. scheduled tip between Jeannette and Greensburg Salem.

The other six contests schedules are Belle Vernon at Hempfield, Derry vs. Greensburg Central Catholic, Kiski Area vs. Norwin, Burrell vs. Monessen, Valley vs. Latrobe and Southmoreland vs. Mt. Pleasant.

The Clash

A similar event will take place Saturday at New Castle and will include a pair of girls basketball games to go along with five boys hoops contests making up The Clash at New Castle.

The event begins with the two girls games with host New Castle facing Lincoln Park at 11:30 a.m. and Neshannock facing Kennedy Catholic at 1 p.m.

Then the boys hit the Red Hurricanes’ court with Farrell vs. Neshannock, Indiana vs. Shenango, Canfield (Ohio) vs. Butler, Freeport at New Castle and concluding with First Love Christian vs. Kennedy Catholic at 9 p.m.

She Got Game

This is the 10th year of the She Got Game event that promotes girls high school basketball. The event is played over three weekends in Texas, Georgia and this weekend in Washington, D.C.

The event features 123 teams from 12 states, as well as Canada and Australia.

Two WPIAL teams will take part as Penn Hills and North Catholic head south to the nation’s capital for games on Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday afternoon, Penn Hills will face American Heritage from Florida while North Catholic takes on Glenn from North Carolina.

Then on Sunday, the Indians challenge Medgar Evers from New York while the Trojans battle Cardinal O’Hara from New York.
