The Brownsville football team is under the guidance of its third head coach in as many seasons, but the new man in charge has been a familiar face through all the change.
Scott Fichter, an assistant coach the past three seasons, replaced William Maczko after he resigned in July.
Maczko, who led the Falcons for one season, had replaced Jason House, who had a two-year stint.
Fichter has quickly jumped into head coaching duties, and with the help of a strong group of senior leaders, is ready to guide the Falcons into the 2018 season.
“The guys are working really hard,” he said. “We’ve got some great senior leaders. We’ve got a core group of six guys who have been here four years – Dylan Lewis, Lucas Harn, Quintin Mapstone, Evan Olesko, Jamal Minor and Austin Lincoski. They’ve really jelled and kept this thing together. It’s been a good thing.”
Lewis, Mapstone, Olesko and Minor are all three-year linemen, while Harn returns at quarterback after starting last season. Lincoski was his primary target at wide receiver.
Other returning starters include defensive back Javaughn Dove, lineman Patrick Shumar and running back/defensive back Daniel Grant.
Brownsville, which was winless in 2016, finished 2-8 last season, including a 1-6 mark in the Class 2A Century Conference.
In this year’s Century Conference, Brownsville will battle with Beth-Center, Carmichaels, Charleroi, Frazier, McGuffey, Southmoreland and Washington.
“We’ve got a tough conference,” said Fichter, who spent the past three seasons on the Brownsville staff coaching quarterbacks, wide reeivers and defensive backs. “We’ve got (WPIAL runner-up) Washington coming back, and they just had a great year. There’s competition with Beth-Center, Frazier and the newcomers like McGuffey, Southmoreland. It’s a pretty competitive conference this year. It will be interesting to see. We’re looking forward to some great competition.”
