The third time was not a charm for Sto-Rox. Playing in their very first WPIAL football title game, Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic used a stifling defense to blank the high powered Vikings 14-0 to win a first ever WPIAL football championship for the Trojans.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic rushed for 159 yards on the ground, including a team high 83 yards by Trojans quarterback P.J. Fumore, who ended the first possession of the game for North Catholic with a 2-yard run on fourth and goal. Mike Tarsovich added the extra point and the Trojans led 7-0, an advantage they would take into halftime.

The Trojans defense made the Vikings one dimensional when Sto-Rox had the ball as the ground game finished with only 19 yards on the ground. The all-time leading passer in WPIAL history, Lenny Williams battled the still wind and an even stiffer Trojans defense, but every time Sto-Rox would start to move the ball, their drive would fizzle thanks in part to three Vikings turnover and costly flags. The Vikings were penalized 15 times for 99 yards.

The Sto-Rox defense kept the Vikings into the game until an 8 play, 80 yard drive to begin the fourth quarter that was highlighted by a 42-yard touchdown run by Fulmore. The scoring drive was capped off by a 17-yard run up the middle by Jerome Turner, who carried the ball the final five times in the drive that put the Trojans up 14-0 after the Tarasovich point after touchdown.

Williams, who earlier this week announced he would be going to Temple University, finished his magnificent career hitting on 16 of 26 passes for 203 yards as the Vikings settle for silver for a third straight year and finish with a final record of 12-1.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic celebrates the school’s first ever WPIAL football championship in this, the final year in the old building on Troy Hill before opening the new school in Cranberry next fall. The Trojans improve to 13-0 and will face District 5 champion Tussey Mountain in CWNC’s first ever state playoff game next Friday at 7:00pm at Hampton High School.
