We here at Blackhawk are looking forward to another year of competitive volleyball. Our varsity team is a combination of Seniors, Juniors, Sophmores and Freshmen. We are fortunate to have a group of academically gifted students; many of our players are high honor and honor roll students. We are proud to say that all of our starting varsity players are either high honor or advanced placement students, many of whom are taking college credit courses during their senior year this year with Pitt University. We have five returning seniors including Tori Foster, OH/MB with 4 years of high school volleyball experience, WPIAL section 6A 3rd team in 2011, and an accomplished basketball player since 2nd grade. Sophomores had big games. Players who were their team’s No. 1 running back for the first time did some good things. A receiver turned running back also had a big game. The first weekend of the high school football season was a virtual coming-out party for some. Players introduced themselves to WPIAL football – and they were loud introductions. The leading rusher on the first weekend of the season was North Catholic’s P.J. Fulmore, a 10th-grader who had 265 yards. The second-leading rusher was Fort Cherry’s Koltan Kobrys, who played receiver last year. He ran for 250 yards.This Week on the MSA Sports Network – 09/03/2012

London Bound: Local Athletes on the USA Olympic Team – Christa Harmotto

Christa Harmotto, a 2005 graduate of Hopewell High School, was named to the final roster for the US Olympic Volleyball team that will compete in the London Olympics. She has been a part of the national team since she graduated from Penn State University in 2009 after a four year career where she was a two time first team All-American selection, and three time All-American. At Penn State, she was part of four straight Big Ten titles, consecutive NCAA titles and an undefeated season in 2008. During her career at Hopewell, she was the 2004 Pennsylvania Gatorade Player of the Year and was a two-time high school All-American.2011-2012 WPIAL and PITTSBURGH CITY LEAGUE CHAMPIONS on PARADE

Shatori Walker-Kimbrough says one of her goals at some point in the near future is to dunk a basketball. Maybe even next season at Hopewell High School. But when it comes to the best female athlete in the WPIAL, Walker-Kimbrough is a slam-dunk winner – again. Walker-Kimbrough recently finished her junior year at Hopewell, and it was a year to remember. Walker-Kimbrough played three sports for Hopewell, but did more than just play them. In the end, there was nothing but empty dreams returning home to Western Pennsylvania after a pair of District 7 teams fell in the state Semifinals on Saturday at Penn State. Both Norwin in AAA and Ambridge in AA fell one game shy of the state finals, the Knights in three games, the Bridgers in five heartbreaking games. In the end, Chambersburg from District 3 and Bethlehem Catholic from District 11 were crowned champions. Ambridge won their fourth WPIAL Class AA championship in the past five years in dramatic fashion defeating Derry in a comeback victory 18-25, 14-25, 25-12, 25-23, 15-8. on Friday night at Chartiers Valley High School. In the first two games Ambidge never led by more than two points early. Ambridge led 5-3 in the first game when Derry went on a 12-5 run to take control of the game. In game two Ambridge led 4-2 and Derry scored the next 7 and cruised to victory. Matt Vasinko had numerous kills for the Trojans. Game three Lee Smith for Ambridge came alive and pretty much was unstoppable.
