Saturday was an historic night at Chartiers Valley High School at the AA WPIAL Championships. That was because Derry senior Jimmy Gulibon joined an elite club, becoming the 22nd wrestler in WPIAL history to win 4 WPIAL Championships.

He did it by packaging several takedowns together to knock off Keystone Oaks junior Nick Zanetta 11-4 at 126 pounds. “I felt I could of done a lot more on my feet, scored a little bit more, but Zanetta wrestled a great match”, said Gulibon. “I ended up doing what I needed to do and winning.” Gulibon becomes the second Derry wrestler to join the club, as Troy Dolan won his 4th WPIAL Championship in 2007.

Three other WPIAL wrestlers were looking to repeat and succeeded. Sophomore Jason Nolf of Kittanning won at 113 pounds, winning by a major decision over sophomore John Demaske of Jefferson Morgan 16-2 to remain undefeated in his career at 80-0. Junior Dakota DesLauriers of Burrell defended his crown at 182 pounds, winning by fall at 3:45 over sophomore Terrell Fields of Valley to complete a tournament that included 3 pins to a title for DesLauriers. At 195 pounds, Southmoreland senior Jordan Kitta also won back to back WPIAL Championships, winning for a second week in a row 4-2 over Mapletown senior Kyle Gray.

Overall there were 12 total schools with WPIAL Champions with only Charleroi and Forth Cherry with 2 champions each. Listen in to Inside the WPIAL Wrestling Circle on Monday at 7:00 PM for a full recap of the tournament and to hear Derry senior Jimmy Gulibon talk about winning his fourth WPIAL Championship.
