District College Football Recap for Saturday, September 2nd

With storms throughout the Western Pennsylvania area, the district College Football season kicked off with a bang with several great games. Here are the recaps of those games:

Washington & Jefferson 23 – Methodist 6
On a 95 degree day in Fayetteville, North Carolina, the Presidents survived the heat, humidity and an outage that left the stadium without power for the entire second half for the victory to open the season.

The Presidents got off to a great start, scoring just two and a half minutes into the game as Matt Bliss tossed a short touchdown pass to Hunter Creel. W & J took advantage of a turnover later in the quarter as Dan Sciorrtino stepped in front of a Max Reber pass and set the Presidents up at the Methodist 26. Eric Eberle kicked a 22 yard field goal and W & J went up 10-0.

Both teams missed chances in the second quarter, W & J had a first and goal at the 3 yard line, but Bliss was sacked twice and the Presidents elected to go for it on fourth down and could not connect with 2:22 left in the half. Methodist took the ball down to the 5 with 24 seconds left, but could not score as Ian Hennessy made a huge stop on a Vaughn Cross catch at the two yard line on the final play of the half.

W & J went up 17-0 early in the third, thanks to a John Cross fumble recovery and return, taking a Cross miscue 63 yards to the Methodist 6. Tim McNerney scored on the next play to put the Presidents up 17-0.

With the lead, W & J turned to the ground game on the next possession, McNerney scored from seven yards to make it 23-0. Reber hit Cross for an eight yard touchdown in the fourth to give Methodist their only score.

McNerney carried 23 times for 91 yards for W & J. Bliss was 21 of 31 for 232 yards and one score. Alex Baroffio was outstanding once again, with 11 catches for 127 yards.

Reber was 19 of 33 for 181 yards, he was picked off twice and sacked five times. Cross had 9 catches for  78 yards. 

Frostburg State 56 – Geneva 53
In a game that saw 73 first downs and 1,275 yards of offense, the team that had the ball last got the win as Ken Emmons hit Anthony Young for a 14 yard touchdown with 10 seconds to play to give Frostburg State the home win.

Geneva led 14-7 after one quarter, Zach Hayward hit Corey O'Patchen for a 25 yard touchdown and Rocco Colavecchia scored on a 5 yard run. The second quarter saw 35 points scored, Emmons hit Young for a 7 yard strike, Hayward answered with a 25 yard td pass to Jon Bushmire. Emmons and Young connected again for a 25 yard touchdown to knot the score at 21. Michael Taylor scooped up a fumble and took it 64 yards for a touchdown to give the Bobcats the lead. Hayward would come thru again, finding Jordan Curry for a 7 yard touchdown to tie the game at 28 at the half.

Geneva started the scoring in the third, Hayward to Colavecchia for 11 yards, Josh Guiser broke a 66 yard run and the GT's were up 41-28 with 11:16 left, but Emmons marched Frostburg State right down the field, finding Antonio Wood for a 53 yard score and set the stage for a great fourth quarter.

Emmons took the lead back for Frostburg, capping a 9 play 80 yard drive with a yard run with 7:46 left in regulation. Hayward took the Golden Tornadoes back down the field, connecting with Colavecchia for their third touchdown of the day, the six yard pass just 31 seconds after the Emmons score put Geneva up 47-42, but the two point try was no good.

Chuky Iweh scored on a 3 yard run with 3:13 to play, giving the Bobcats back the lead at 49-47. Hayward led Geneva down the field again, going 75 yards in just under two minutes, hitting Guiser for a 7 yard touchdown with 1:14 left. But aided by a personal foul penalty against Geneva, Emmons was able to move the team down the field and find Young for his third touchdown of the game and the win.

Colavecchia led the way for Geneva with 77 yards rushing on 13 carries. He had 7 catches for 66 yards. Hayward put up huge numbers, 38 of 48 for 464 yards and six touchdowns, he was not sacked or intercepted. Curry had 9 catches, O'Patchen 7 for 141 yards.

Iweh ran 25 times for 140 yards for Frostburg State. Emmons was 17 of 31 for 283 and four touchdowns. Young had 7 catches for 118 yards, Wood had 3 receptions for 100 yards.

Slippery Rock 52 – Seton Hill 6
Jared Buck threw for three scores and ran for another as the Rock jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead and never looked back at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium. SRU used strong defense as well, picking off three passes and notched six quarterback sacks, while holding the Griffins down to 181 yards of offense.

The Rock scored on their second possession of the season, Buck to Josh Gardner for 17 yards and a 7-0 lead. SRU was set up in good field position by an Admire Carter punt return of 28 yards. Buck hit Michael Bongivengo six plays later for a 10 yard score and the rout was on.

Buck added a yard run a minute into the second for a 21-0 lead. Anthony Saunders added to that with a 50 yard Pick 6, stepping in front of a Ryan Morris pass. Buck completed his night in the scoring column with a 28 yard pass to Ken Amos with 8:32 left in the half and the 35 point lead.

In the third quarter, the Rock turned to the rushing game, following a Kurt Brackman 26 yard field goal, Akeem Satterfield scored on a 27 yard run to make it 45-0. Seton Hill had their only scoring drive of the game, it was a good one, going 12 plays and 96 yards, Tavin Davis scored from 1 yard out. Brett Crenshaw scored his first touchdown of the season on a two yard run to end the scoring.

For SRU, Satterfield carried 13 times for 112 yards. Buck was 11 of 14 for 127 yards and the three scores, the only downside, he was sacked three times. Eight players caught passes for the Rock in the game. To go with the six sacks and three interceptions, the Rock D held Seton Hill to minus 16 yards rushing.

Old Dominion 57 – Duquesne 23
The Dukes led 20-10 at the half in Norfolk, but the Monarchs blew past in the second, scoring 47 points for the win. Taylor Heinicke completed 41 of 63 passes for 492 yards, setting two school records for attempts and passing yards. Heinicke tossed four touchdowns.

Sean Patterson to Sean Brady gave Duquesne a 7-3 lead early in the second with a 33 yard touchdown pitch and catch. Larry McCoy scored from two yards out two and half minutes later put the Dukes up 14-3. Heinicke hit Antonio Vaughn for a 14 yard touchdown to cut the lead to 14-10. Christian Kuntz took a Heinicke pass 49 yards for a Pick Six with 38 seconds left in the half to extend the Dukes lead.

Heinicke hooked up with Nick Mayers for touchdowns of 11 and 75 yards. Tyree Lee added two touchdowns during the scoring run, the Dukes could do nothing to stop the Monarchs offense, ODU entered the game ranked sixth in the FCS coaches poll.

Mayers ended with six catches for 134 yards. Blair Roberts had wight grabs for 104 yards. Lee ran nine times for 113 yards.

Patterson and McCoy were both shut down, especially in the second half. Patterson ended 9 of 21 for 94 yards and two interceptions. McCoy ran for 49 yards.

James Madison 55 – Saint Francis 7
The 8th ranked Dukes rolled up 602 yards of offense to blow out the Red Flash at home on Saturday night. Dae'Quan Scott ran for a score and caught a td pass from Justin Thorpe. Thorpe also ran for two scores. John Kelly hit Kevin Parker for the only score for the Red Flash.

Thorpe threw for 177 yards and led the Dukes with 76 yards rushing on 11 carries. Scott added 73 yards on 12 carries.

North Dakota State 52 – Robert Morris 0
The defending FCS national champions rolled over the Colonials for the victory in the Thunderdome in Fargo on Saturday night.

Brock Jensen threw for 217 yards on 16 of 23 and three touchdowns for the number one ranked Bison. Robert Morris managed just 88 yards of offense in the game.

IUP 33 – Southern Connecticut 6
IUP started the season with a home win at George P. Miller Stadium, with 456 yards of offense, including 310 on the ground in the win.

Harvie Tuck ran 28 times for 185 yards and Montay Green tallied 20 times for 101 yards, each scored a touchdown. The IUP defense was strong, holding Southern Connecticut to just seven first downs and 42 yards rushing.

Green started the scoring with a one yard run in the first quarter, Tuck added a 23 yard scamper in the second. Jacob Jablanski got the Owls on the board with a six yard pass to Carlton Staggars. Brett Ullman made the score 17-6 at the half with a 42 yard field goal as time expired.

Quarterback Pat Smith got into the act with a three yard touchdown on a naked bootleg. Smith then hit Tyler Dummermuth with a 51 yard crossing pass for a touchdown and a 31-6 lead late in the third. Greg Meisner was able to force a fourth quarter safety to end the scoring.

Bridgewater 23 – Saint Vincent 7
After a scoreless first half, Bridgewater QB Willie Logan took over in the second half, throwing for two scores and running for another to pick up the victory at Chuck Noll Field. Logan finished 16 of 24 for 154 yards, he also ran for 36 yards on 10 carries. Jacob Wright did the bulk of the work for Bridgewater, with 21 totes for 109 yards.

David Emanuel caught a one yard touchdown pass from Andy Borgen for the Bearcats only score. Ricky Douglas had five catches for 88 yards for Saint Vincent, who was held to just 87 yards rushing and turned the ball over four times.

Centre 42 – Bethany 21
Centre quarterback Heath Haden threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in the first half, Monte Scotton took over in the second half, running for three scores, to hand the Bison a loss in their home opener.

Haden ran 19 times for 151 yards and was 10 of 18 for 180 yards passing. Scotton carried 24 times for 85 yards. Rob Melillo had five catches for 113 yards and a touchdown.

Phil Acre started the scoring for Bethany on a yard run to give the Bison a 7-0 lead. Matt Grimard tossed a touchdown pass to Eric Blinn for six yards with 40 seconds remaining in the first half to tie the score at 14 but Haden's two yard run with just two seconds left in the half put Centre up for good. Grimard added a 19 yard touchdown strike to Marcus D'Aguiar in the fourth quarter. Grimard was 15 of 28 for 138 yards, he was sacked four times.

Juniata 16 – Thiel 13
Scott Andrews kicked a 27 yard field goal with 4:56 remaining to send the Tomcats to their 23rd consecutive loss. Thiel led 13-6 early in the third quarter after Taylor Fink scored his second touchdown on a one yard run.

But Ward Udinski tied the game later in the third with a yard run, setting Andrews for his second field goal of the game in the fourth. Zach McCaulley ran 26 times for 120 yards for Juniata, Udinski was 16 of 28 passing for 212 yards.

Fink led the way for the Tomcats with 27 carries and 115 yards to go with the two scores.

Waynesburg 34 – Muskingum 23
The Yellow Jackets rallied from a 23-14 deficit, scoring 20 unanswered fourth quarter points on the way to the road win. Domenic Moore scored his second touchdown of the game on a 1 yard run to make the score 23-21. Bertrand Ngampa gave Waynesburg the lead for good with a 40 yard run with 4:08 left, Alex Henry added two field goals in the final two minutes to put the game away.

Ngampa ran 12 times for 91 yards and the score. Tyler Fatigante struggled throwing the ball, going 6 of 24 for just 16 yards with two interceptions, but he ran 12 times for 79 yards and a score for Waynesburg.

Alex Meredith threw two touchdown passes to James Washington for the Muskies. Meredith also struggled, he was 11 of 30 for 124 yards and also tossed two picks.

Carnegie Mellon 23 – Grove City 20
In a long game at CMU that saw a hour and fifty minute lighting delay in the fourth quarter, the Tartans came away with the victory.

Shane Kaclik staked Grove City to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on a two yard run, Jake Nardone answered with a 5 yard run for CMU, the extra point put the Tartans up. After a Connor Young 43 yard field goal in the second for CMU, Brian Pell hit Anthony Ritchie for a 13 yard touchdown to give the Wolverines a 13-10 lead with 1:38 in the half. The defense could not hold that lead, Rob Kalkstein found Timothy Swanson for a 52 yard touchdown with 11 seconds to play to put the Tartans back up 16-13.

Pell connected with Ritchie again, this time for 21 yards and a 20-16 Grove City lead in the third, then came the delay. Kalkstein hit Tim Kitka for a 45 yard touchdown with 5:06 left for the final score. Liam McGrath intercepted a Pell pass with 2:41 left to seal the win.

Kalkstein finished 8 of 16 for 192 yards, the Tartan running game was held to 181 yards, Jared Delello led the way with 71 yards on 15 carries.

Pell was 21 of 39 for 188 yards for Grove City, he was picked off three times.

Westminster 28 – Hiram 0
Tyler Banks scored two first quarter touchdowns and Dak Britt hit Gino Pasquinelli for a 43 yard touchdown in the third quarter to put the Titans up big on their home field. Britt would hit Connor Kobis for a five yard score in the fourth for his second touchdown of the game.

Britt, a transfer from Tiffin, threw for 154 yards on 14 of 25. Pasquinelli had six catches for 81 yards.

Allegheny 17 – Wooster 14
The Gators rallied in the second half for the road win in the NCAC conference opener for both teams. Wooster jumped out to a 14-0 second quarter lead on two Richard Barnes touchdown passes, one to Tyler Sinclair for 9 yard and a 2 yard strike to Justin Rice.

Play was halted with 51 seconds remaining until halftime due to lighting, after that the Gators took over the game. Mike Person hit David Bassi for an 8 yard touchdown on the first play after the delay to cut the Wooster lead to 14-7 at the half.

Person found Isaac Gittens for a 32 yard score late in the third quarter to knot the score at 14.

Wooster would drive on the first possession of the fourth, but turned the ball over on downs at the Allegheny 19. After both teams punted. the Gators took over at their own 31 with 7:50 remaining. Person led Allegheny on a great drive, going 15 plays and leading to a Ryan Mong 28 yard field goal with ninety seconds to play.

Wooster could not get into range for a score and turned the ball over on downs for the second time in the quarter, allowing Allegheny to enter into victory formation.

Defense ruled the day, Allegheny gained only 204 yards of offense, Wooster was held to just 271 yards. But Gators win the most important battle, the scoreboard.
