Finalists set for WPIBL boys, girls championships

The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Bowling League will conduct its team championship tournaments Wednesday and Thursday.

The boys event will be Wednesday at Nesbits Lanes in Plum, and the girls will bowl Thursday at AMF Noble Manor Lanes in Crafton.

Each tournament is slated to begin at 3 p.m.

The top two teams from each boys and girls section will compete for the WPIBL team titles.

The boys teams in action are Hempfield, Franklin Regional, Butler, North Allegheny, Plum, Gateway, Beaver Falls, Ambridge, Norwin, McKeesport, Moon, Quaker Valley, Carlynton, Pittsburgh Central Catholic, Thomas Jefferson, Steel Valley, Armstrong and Kiski Area.

Competing in the girls team tournament are Greensburg Salem, Penn-Trafford, Butler, Shaler Area, Penn Hills,

Plum, Ambridge, Blackhawk, McKeesport, Norwin, Moon, Avonworth, Montour, Bishop Canevin, Elizabeth Forward, Steel Valley, Burrell and Armstrong.

The section champions also are automatically entered in the Western Regional tournament March 9 at North Versailles Bowl.

The remaining regional qualifiers from the WPIBL will come from the section runners-up. Of those nine teams, the top seven finishers at the WPIBL team championship will advance to regionals.

WPIBL teams will compete at regionals against schools from Erie, Venango and Crawford counties.
