Athletic director Vince Sortino, who saw Baldwin eliminate his position last month, wasn’t out of work long.

Sortino was hired Thursday as athletic director at Dallastown, a public high school in York County that ranks among the state’s largest.

“I knew I would land somewhere, I was confident in that, but this really feels like a perfect fit,” Sortino said. “It’s a great school district, they have a great administrative team and we all seem to be on the same page in what we want. They want what’s best for the kids, and so do I.”

Sortino was a 28-year employee at Baldwin before the school board voted June 13 to eliminate the athletic director position and furlough him. The former special education teacher was Baldwin’s athletic director for the past 12 years.

“I’ll miss Baldwin, I’ll miss the community, I’ll miss District 7 and the kids,” Sortino said. “There are a lot of friendships and relationships you build when you’re there a long time. … But I’m looking forward to building those new relationships with people in District 3.

“You turn the corner,” Sortino added. “I don’t have anything negative to say about Baldwin. They were great to me for 28 years. There are great people there. I’m sad I’m leaving, but I’m really happy that I’m going to a place that’s so welcoming and appreciates me and really wants me.”

Sortino’s 200-mile move to the east also means he’ll resign as a member of the WPIAL board of directors.

At Dallastown, Sortino replaces longtime athletic director Tory Harvey, who announced his retirement after 20 years at the school.

Dallastown competes at the Class 6A level in football, basketball, baseball and softball. When compared with WPIAL schools, only North Allegheny and Seneca Valley have larger enrollments.

The school is a member of PIAA District 3, which also includes the Harrisburg area.
