Freedom, McGuffey, Quaker Valley wrestlers advance to regional quarterfinals

Freedom advanced five of eight wrestlers to the quarterfinals of the PIAA Class AA Southwest Regional at IUP's Kovalchick Conference and Athletic Complex on Friday.

McGuffey and Quaker Valley each advanced four wrestlers, while Burrell, Derry, Ellwood City and Mt. Pleasant each advanced three.

The quarterfinals will be held Friday night, and the semifinals and finals are set for Saturday.

In all, 42 of 98 WPIAL wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals, including 13 of the 14 WPIAL champions.

The only WPIAL champion not to advance was Burrell senior Shaun Gates at 160 pounds. No wrestler from the WPIAL advanced at that weight.

The WPIAL did advance five of seven wrestlers in the 106-pound weight class and at heavyweight and four of seven at 126 and 132 pounds.

Advancing for Freedom were Kenny Duschek (120 pounds), Z.J. Ward (126), Trent Schultheis (132), Jake Pail (138) and Bryson Miller (195). The win by Ward was the 100th of his career.

McGuffey's four to advance were Jett Pattison (126), Christian Clutter (170), Luke Shingle (182) and Dalton Lough (195). The four to advance for Quaker Valley were Conner Redinger (106), John Rocco Kazalas (132), Austin Dohl (152) and Geoff Magin (182).

Burrell only advanced three of 10 wrestlers, including Trent Valovchik (106), Ian Oswalt (113) and Corey Christie (152). Derry's trio to move on was Ty Cymmerman (120), Shawn Broadway (126) and Dom DeLuca (220).

Mt. Pleasant also had three wrestlers advance — Doug Bittner (113), Alex Miscovich (132) and Cody Vokes (heavyweight).

Jefferson Morgan's Gavin Teasdale (126) and Ligonier Valley's Robby Patrick (170) also advance as they seek their fourth regional titles.
