Greensburg Salem named Mark Zahorchak as its new boys basketball coach at a recent special school board meeting.

Zahorchak, 48, replaces Craig Mankins, who resigned June 15.

He coached at Greensburg Salem in the past as a freshman coach and assistant football coach. He hasn’t coached the past two seasons.

“I’m excited,” said the 1988 Greensburg Salem graduate. “Craig did an excellent job the past few seasons, and I want to continue it. We have a good bunch of players returning, and I’m looking forward to the challenge of the tough section.”

Greensburg Salem is in Class 5A, Section 1, with Laurel Highlands, Gateway, Penn Hills, Woodland Hills, McKeesport and Albert Gallatin.

Zahorchak met with the team Thursday and is planning to begin workouts next week.

“My plan is to run deliberate half-court offense and a pressure defense,” Zahorchak said. “I hope we’ll be able to score off our defense.”

Mankins resigned to tend with family issues. He coached the Golden Lions for six seasons and compiled a record of 48-87, with three WPIAL playoff appearances.
