The Hempfield Area School Board voted to accept slow-pitch softball as a club sport.

Players will be eligible to earn a school letter and be recognized.

Hempfield will play in the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Softball League. There are 15 teams in the league, including squads from Plum, Mt. Pleasant, Mt. Lebanon and North Allegheny.

It is a fall sport and Hempfield will play its games at Tillbrook in West Hempfield.

“This is our seventh season,” coach Mike Palmiero said. “We're looking to grow the sport.”

Hempfield has fielded junior high and junior varsity teams the past two seasons in the WPISL.
