High school football roundup for Nov. 2, 2018: Mt. Lebanon tops Canon-McMillan in quarterfinals

Seth Morgan threw for 259 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 71 yards and another TD to lead No. 3 Mt. Lebanon to a 38-31 victory over No. 6 Canon-McMillan (4-6) in the WPIAL Class 6A quarterfinals Friday night.

The Blue Devils’ Lucas Decaro caught seven passes for 105 yards and a touchdown, and teammate Sam Lasota added six receptions for 106 yards and a TD.

Mt. Lebanon (6-5), which trailed by seven points at halftime, scored 21 points in the third quarter to secure the win. Jon Quinque threw for 252 yards and three touchdowns for Canon-McMillan while Drew Engle caught nine passes for 156 yards and two scores. Mt. Lebanon faces Pine-Richland in next week’s semifinals.

Class 5A

Peters Township 35, Armstrong 7 — Ryan Magiske ran for 100 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 3 Peters Township (9-2) to the WPIAL Class 5A first-round playoff victory over visiting No. 14 Armstrong (5-6). Aidan McCall added a 38-yard interception return in Peters Township’s 21-point second quarter. The Indians will play No. 6 Penn-Trafford in the quarterfinals.

Class 4A

Blackhawk 23, West Mifflin 21 — Despite Parrish Parker running for 246 yards and two touchdowns, No. 5 West Mifflin (5-6) fell at No. 4 Blackhawk (10-1) in the WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinals. Chance Liptak threw for 185 yards and three touchdowns for Blackhawk, which will face No. 1 Thomas Jefferson in next week’s semifinals.

Thomas Jefferson 49, New Castle 16 — In the WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinals, Max Shaw ran for 224 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 1 Thomas Jefferson (10-0) to victory over No. 8 New Castle (5-6). Shane Stump completed 11 of 12 passes for 163 yards and four touchdowns, while Dan Deabner caught six passes for 110 yards and three TDs and returned a punt 73 yards for another score. The Jaguars face Blackhawk in next week’s semifinals.

Class 2A

Freedom 24, Avonworth 21 — In a first-round matchup in the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs, Jake Pail ran for 134 yards while Cody Ross added 99 rushing yards and a touchdown in No. 7 Freedom’s win over No. 10 Avonworth (7-4). Zach Rosa added 42 rushing yards and two touchdowns for Freedom (10-1), which advances to play Burgettstown in next week’s quarterfinals. Derek Johncour led Avonworth with 255 passing yards and a touchdown to Turner Grau, who caught six passes for 136 yards.

Shady Side Academy 22, Serra Catholic 20 — Dino Tomlin scored on a 51-yard punt return and a 65-yard interception return as No. 1 Shady Side Academy (10-0) avoided being upset by No. 16 Serra Catholic (6-5) in the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs. Matt Ulishuey scored on a 101-yard interception return at the end of the first half for Serra Catholic, which also got fourth-quarter touchdowns from Ray Holmes and Jayvon Holt to pull within two points. Shady Side Academy faces South Side Beaver in next week’s quarterfinals.

South Side Beaver 36, McGuffey 27 — Derek Franchek and Trenton Seik each scored twice as No. 8 South Side (8-3) defeated No. 9 McGuffey (8-3) in the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs. Christian Clutter scored all four of McGuffey’s touchdowns, giving him 41 touchdowns for the season. South Side will play Shady Side Academy next week in the Class 2A quarterfinals.

Steel Valley 49, Beth-Center 0 — Kameron Williams ran for 225 yards and two touchdowns and added a TD reception to lead No. 3 Steel Valley (9-1) over No. 14 Beth-Center (7-4) in the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs. Todd Hill added 101 rushing yards and two touchdowns for Steel Valley while teammate Ronell Lawrence threw for 167 yards and three TDs. Steel Valley next plays Washington in the Class 2A quarterfinals.

Washington 54, New Brighton 20 — No. 6 Washington (10-1) gained 611 yards of offense in its WPIAL Class 2A first-round playoff victory against No. 11 New Brighton (5-6). Zahmere Robinson caught six passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 144 yards and a 61-yard score for the Little Prexies, who advance to face Steel Valley. Zack Swartz threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns and added two rushing TDs while Dan Walker ran for 96 yards and two scores. Asthon Fath scored on a pair of 1-yard runs in the loss.

Class A

Clairton 27, California 17 — Brendan Parsons hit Kenlein Ogletree with scoring passes of 77 and 65 yards as No. 2 Clairton (9-1) defeated No. 7 California (6-5) in the WPIAL Class A quarterfinals at Elizabeth Forward. Taevon Thompson added a touchdown for Clairton on a 26-yard interception return while Cochise Ryan returned an interception 18 yards for a score for California. Clairton will play OLSH in the Class A semifinals next week.

Rochester 52, West Greene 14 — Noah Whiteleather ran for 254 yards and two touchdowns as No. 5 Rochester (10-1) rushed for 539 yards as a team in its win at No. 4 West Greene (7-4) in the WPIAL Class A quarterfinals at Waynesburg. Darius Goosby added 152 rushing yards and four touchdowns for Rochester while teammate Rashawn Reid ran three times for 134 yards and touchdowns of 59 and 78 yards. Ben Jackson rushed for both of West Greene’s touchdowns. Rochester moves on to play Jeannette in the Class A semifinals.
