High school football roundup for Oct. 5, 2018: West Allegheny rallies past Baldwin

Kam Kruze’s 39-yard scoring pass to Drevon Baldwin with 49.1 seconds remaining lifted No. 4 West Allegheny to a 29-26 come-from-behind win over Baldwin in the Class 5A Allegheny 8 Conference.

West Allegheny’s Logan Malatak blocked and recovered a punt at the Baldwin 27-yard line to set up the final score.

Kruze threw for 132 yards while teammate Dante Flati rushed for 118 yards and one touchdown. Mason Stahl threw for 223 yards and two touchdowns to lead Baldwin (4-3, 2-3).

West Allegheny (5-1, 5-1) trailed by five points heading into the final quarter.

Class 6A

North Allegheny 55, Butler 3 — Ben Petschke threw for 156 yards and two touchdowns as No. 2 North Allegheny (7-0, 6-0) downed Butler (0-7, 0-5) in Class 6A. North Allegheny led at the half, 49-3.

Pine-Richland 38, Canon-McMillan 7 — Luke Meckler ran for 141 yards and three touchdowns to lead top-ranked Pine-Richland (6-1, 5-0) to the Class 6A win at Canon-McMillan (2-4, 1-4). Cole Spencer threw for 170 yards and ran for a touchdown for the Rams while Jonathan Quinque tossed for 103 yards for Canon-McMillan.

Class 5A

Bethel Park 49, Chartiers Valley 21 — Luke Surunis ran for 156 yards and a touchdown while teammate Sean McGowan added 102 rushing yards and three rushing and one receiving touchdown in Bethel Park’s Allegheny 8 win at Chartiers Valley (3-4, 0-4). Anthony Chiccitt added 135 passing yards and two touchdowns for Bethel Park (4-2, 3-1) while Connor Barrett paced Chartiers Valley with 136 rushing yards and two TDs.

Peters Township 33, Moon 21 — Logan Pfeuffer threw for 308 yards and four touchdowns to lead Peters Township (5-2, 3-1) to the Allegheny 8 win against Moon (2-5, 1-3). Josh Casilli caught five passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns and Ryan Magiske added 120 rushing yards and one TD for Peters Township. Dante Clay threw for 210 yards and two touchdowns to lead Moon.

Mars 42, North Hills 14 — Garrett Reinke ran 20 times for 212 yards and two touchdowns, including one from 98 yards, to lead Mars (6-1, 3-1) over North Hills (4-3, 3-1) in the Northern Conference. Tyler Kowalkowski threw for 166 yards and a touchdown. Teddy Ruffner ran for one touchdown and returned an interception 41 yards for another for North Hills.

Penn Hills 34, Hampton 3 — Hollis Mathis completed all but one of his 12 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 2 Penn Hills (7-0, 5-0) to the Northern Conference win at Hampton (2-5, 1-5). Anthony Grimes added two touchdowns for the Indians — on a 20-yard pass from Mathis and a 5-yard run.

It was the 500th win in team history for the Indians.

Albert Gallatin 45, Plum 7 — Max Matolcsy scored twice on defense— on a 35-yard fumble return and a 9-yard interception return— as Albert Gallatin (1-6, 1-3) beat Plum (1-6, 0-6) in the Big East Conference.

Class 4A

Belle Vernon 54, Trinity 0 — Mason Pascoe broke 1,000 rushing yards for the season by running for 111 yards and a touchdown to lead No. 3 Belle Vernon to a victory over Trinity (1-5, 1-5) in the Big 8 Conference.

Pascoe has gained 1,101 yards on the ground this season. Jarod Hartman threw for 101 yards and a touchdown and ran for three touchdowns while teammate Larry Callaway added three rushing touchdowns for the Leopards (5-1, 4-1).

Belle Vernon held the Hillers to 29 yards.

Laurel Highlands 52, Ringgold 13 — Conner Basinger threw for 137 yards and a touchdown and ran for 199 yards and five TDs to lead Laurel Highlands (3-4, 1-3) to the Big 8 win at Ringgold (0-7, 0-4). Tyler Buzalka ran for 136 yards and a 36-yard touchdown for Ringgold.

Beaver 51, Ambridge 0 — Gino Mavero rushed for 164 yards and three touchdowns to lead Beaver (5-2, 3-2) to the Northwest 8 win at Ambridge (1-6, 0-4). Brodie List added 120 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Blackhawk 42, New Castle 17 — Marques Watson-Trent scored four times as No. 4 Blackhawk (6-1, 5-1) defeated New Castle (3-4, 1-3) in the Northwest 8 Conference. Kenny Gawley added rushing touchdowns of 23 and 25 yards in the win.

South Fayette 35, Knoch 14 — Jamie Diven threw for 232 yards and all five South Fayette touchdowns in its Northwest 8 Conference win at Knoch (2-5, 2-4). Mike Trimbur caught six passes for 159 yards and three touchdowns for No. 2 South Fayette (6-1, 4-0), which scored 28 points in the second quarter. Chase Mullen tossed for 100 yards and ran for a touchdown in the loss.

Class 3A

Quaker Valley 46, Waynesburg 14 — Ethan Moore completed 22 of 34 passes for 319 yards and two touchdowns and added three rushing TDs to lead Quaker Valley (3-3, 3-2) over Waynesburg (1-6, 0-5) in Tri-County West play. Caleb Shriver ran for 183 yards and a 61-yard touchdown for Waynesburg.

South Park 34, Hopewell 17 — Rudy Mihoces scored on a 16-yard run and an 88-yard kickoff return as South Park (2-4, 2-2) beat Hopewell (2-5, 1-3) in a Tri-County West matchup. Jay’Von Jeter threw for 282 yards and a touchdown for Hopewell.

Class 2A

Charleroi 56, Southmoreland 27 — In Century Conference play, Geno Pellegrini threw for 301 yards and five touchdowns as No. 4 Charleroi (5-1, 4-1) beat Southmoreland (3-4, 2-4). Dakota Romantino caught two passes for touchdowns of 48 and 85 yards while teammate Cole Hunter Perry scored three times. Zach Cernuto paced Southmoreland with 212 passing yards and two touchdowns.

McGuffey 34, Brownsville 9 — Christian Clutter scored four touchdowns — three rushing and one receiving — as McGuffey (7-0, 5-0) beat Brownsville (0-7, 0-4) in the Century Conference. Marshall Whipkey added two scoring passes in the win.

Washington 65, Carmichaels 0 — In the Century Conference, No. 5 Washington (6-1, 3-1) held Carmichaels (0-6, 0-5) to 17 total yards in its win. Zack Swartz threw for 145 yards and four touchdowns while Dylan Asbury rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns on only five carries. Washington’s special teams scored twice — on a 30-yard blocked punt return by Mike Allen and a 73-yard punt return by Tyrell Dunn.

Ellwood City 42, Shenango 14 — Donavin Chambers ran for 108 yards and a touchdown and Rick Pitrelli added 103 rushing yards and three TDs as Ellwood City (2-5, 2-4) beat Shenango (1-6, 0-5) in the Midwestern Conference. Santino Campino threw for 158 yards and both of Shenango’s touchdowns.

Mohawk 34, Riverside 18 — Braydon Cameron scored on runs of 43, 31 and 27 yards and on an interception return of 80 yards as Mohawk (6-1, 5-1) defeated Riverside (4-2, 3-2) in the Midwestern Conference.

Burgettstown 42, Carlynton 7 — In the Three Rivers Conference, Jake Lounder threw for one touchdown and ran for another as No. 3 Burgettstown (6-0, 5-0) beat Carlynton (1-6, 0-4). Cyle Conley added two touchdowns in the win.

Serra Catholic 24, Brentwood 21 — Nikolas Fedora’s 39-yard field goal in the fourth quarter capped Serra Catholic’s comeback win against Brentwood (3-4, 2-3) in the Three Rivers Conference. Serra Catholic (4-3, 2-2) trailed Brentwood at halftime, 21-7.

South Side Beaver 43, South Allegheny 0 — In the Three Rivers Conference, Anthony Navarra and Jordan Bruce ran for 146 and 125 yards, respectively, as South Side Beaver (5-2, 3-2) shut out South Allegheny (4-3, 3-1).

Class A

Cornell 40, Bishop Canevin 6 — Zaier Harrison threw for 254 yards and four touchdowns to lead Cornell (4-2, 3-2) to the Big 7 win against Bishop Canevin (2-5, 0-4). Luke Piccolo caught four passes for 145 yards and three touchdowns for the Raiders while adding a scoring run of 56 yards.

Rochester 32, Sto-Rox 12 — Noah Whiteleather gained 138 yards on 27 carries and scored on TD runs of 27 and 3 yards as Rochester (6-1, 4-1) won a Big Seven game. The Rams also got TD runs from Darius Goosby (70 yards) and Dah’vell Duke (2 yards). Vikings QB Eric Wilson threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw four interceptions. Sto-Rox (4-3, 3-2) was penalized 22 times for 210 yards.

Bentworth 42, Avella 15 — Owen Petrisek scored on runs of 5, 2, 35 and 28 yards as Bentworth (4-3, 3-2) beat Avella (1-6, 0-4) in the Tri-County South. Trent Cavanaugh added touchdown runs of 34 and 51 yards.

California 24, West Greene 14 — Jelani Stafford ran for two touchdowns to lead California (3-4, 3-1) to the Tri-County South victory over West Greene (5-2, 5-1). Ben Jackson scored West Greene’s touchdowns on runs of 25 and 57 yards.

Monessen 46, Chartiers-Houston 12 — In the Tri-County South, Kobby Markin and Isaiah Beltram ran for 157 and 124 yards, respectively, as Monessen (5-1, 4-1) scored 40 first-half points on way to defeating Chartiers-Houston (2-5, 2-3).

Aliquippa 54, Yough 20 — Eli Kosanovich threw for 177 yards and three touchdowns to lead Class 3A No. 1 Aliquippa (7-0) to a nonconference win at Yough (3-4). William Gipson caught four passes for 164 yards and a touchdown, Avante McKenzie ran for 113 yards and a TD and caught another touchdown and M.J. Devonshire scored on a 63-yard punt return and a 34-yard reception. Dustin Shoaf led Yough with 134 rushing yards and a 45-yard touchdown.

Avonworth 30, Seton LaSalle 13 — Jax Miller ran for two touchdowns and Derek Johncour threw for two more as Avonworth (6-1) defeated Seton LaSalle (3-4) in nonconference play.

McKeesport 51, Indiana 7 — Quaran Sayles ran four times for 169 yards and touchdowns of 28, 71 and 56 yards and McKeesport (6-1) beat Indiana (2-5) in nonconference play. McKeesport’s Devin Sims started the game with an 81-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Luke Thomas threw for 110 yards and ran for Indiana’s only touchdown.

Steel Valley 49, Western Beaver 14 — In nonconference play, Todd Hill ran for 115 yards and four touchdowns and added a TD on a 14-yard fumble recovery to lead Class 2A No. 2 Steel Valley (5-1) to the win against Western Beaver (2-5). Kameron Williams led Steel Valley’s ground game with 174 rushing yards and a touchdown while Cam Irvine threw for 180 yards and two touchdowns to lead Western Beaver.

Thomas Jefferson 45, Central Valley 6 — Shane Stump threw two touchdown passes, both to Dan Deabner, as Class 4A No. 1 Thomas Jefferson (6-0) defeated Central Valley (2-5) in nonconference play. Dylan Mallozzi added two rushing touchdowns.
