High school football roundup for Sept. 21, 2018: Woodland Hills tops Baldwin for 1st win

In a defensive matchup, Anthony Merideth recorded eight tackles, a sack and a forced fumble as Woodland Hills shut out Baldwin, 12-0, in the Allegheny 8 Conference. William Clark rushed for 113 yards for the Wolverines (1-4, 1-3), while Merideth scored the game’s only touchdown on a 3-yard run in the second quarter.

Baldwin fell to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

Moon 26, Chartiers Valley 0 — Christian Tanner caught touchdown passes of 38 and 2 yards from Dante Clay to guide Moon (2-3, 1-1) to an Allegheny 8 Conference win in a game called in the third quarter because of inclement weather.

Fox Chapel 27, Hampton 6 — In the Northern Conference, Sam Brown ran for 144 yards and two touchdowns to lead Fox Chapel (1-4, 1-3) to the win against Hampton (1-4, 0-4). Cole Waxton added two rushing touchdowns in the win. The game was called with 5:56 left in the fourth quarter.

Class 6A

Seneca Valley 37, Butler 0 — Gabe Lawson threw for two touchdowns and Matt Stanger ran for two more as No. 4 Seneca Valley (4-1, 3-1) shut out Butler (0-5, 0-3) in Class 6A.

Class 4A

Thomas Jefferson 48, Trinity 0 — In a game called at halftime because of severe weather, top-ranked Thomas Jefferson (4-0, 4-0) stormed to victory over Trinity (1-3, 1-3) in the Big 8 Conference. Shane Stump threw for four touchdowns while Dan Deabner caught two scoring passes and returned a punt 46 yards for another TD.

Knoch 56, Ambridge 0 — Matt Goodlin rushed for 140 yards and four touchdowns as Knoch (2-3, 2-2) scored 41 points in the first half in its Northwest 8 win over Ambridge (1-4, 0-2).

Blackhawk at Montour, ppd. — The Northwest 8 matchup was suspended in the third quarter with Blackhawk leading 21-0. The game will resume at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Highlands 40, Beaver 19 – Seth Cohen threw three touchdowns passes, including two to Johnny Crise, as Highlands (1-4, 1-2) won a Northwest 8 Conference game. Cohen threw for 171 yards and ran for 126.

Class 3A

Freeport 55, Uniontown 16 — The Yellowjackets (1-3, 1-3) erupted for 22 points less than five minutes into the game and cruised to their first big East Conference victory. Austin Romanchak rushed for 157 yards and four touchdowns; he scored a fifth on a pass interception. Uniontown (0-5, 0-4) lost its 17th consecutive game and was led by sophomore Ky’ron Craggette with 153 yards and two scores.

Central Valley 28, Keystone Oaks 27 — Ameer Dudley threw for 129 yards and a touchdown and ran for another TD as Central Valley (1-4, 1-2) upset No. 3 Keystone Oaks (4-1, 2-1) in the Tri-County West. The Warriors’ special teams contributed points on Anthony Mendocini’s 78-yard punt return and Ethan Ott’s two field goals. Logan Shrubb threw for 170 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 146 yards and two TDs for Keystone Oaks.

South Park 41, Waynesburg 7 — Rudy Mihoces ran for 128 yards and three touchdowns as South Park (1-3, 1-2) picked up its first win of the year by defeating Waynesburg (1-4, 0-3) in a Tri-County West contest. Stephen Kmonk threw for 136 yards and two touchdowns — both to Brandon Goldbach.

Class 2A

Avonworth 42, Apollo-Ridge 6 — Derek Johncour threw for 186 yards and touchdowns to Turner Grau and Drew Harper, and Jax Miller added 17 carries for 121 yards and three scores as the Antelopes (4-1, 2-1) picked up the Allegheny Conference victory. Grau finished with six catches for 58 yards and added a 13-yard TD run. Klay Fitzroy threw for 98 yards and connected with Keighton Reese on a 7-yard touchdown for the Vikings (2-3, 1-2).

Steel Valley 42, Valley 0 — Steel Valley’s Kameron Williams rushed for 112 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Class AA No. 4-ranked Ironmen past Allegheny Conference rival Valley (1-4, 0-3) in a contest that was called in between the third and fourth quarters because of lighting. Todd Hill scored on a 28-yard interception return and rushed for a 2-yard score to pace Steel Valley (3-1, 3-1).

Charleroi 69, Carmichaels 7 — Geno Pellegrini threw for 121 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 101 yards and a TD as No. 2 Charleroi (4-0, 3-0) won big at Carmichaels (0-4, 0-4) in Century Conference play. Charleroi scored 42 points in the first quarter and led at halftime, 55-7.

McGuffey 48, Beth-Center 14 — Christian Clutter scored three touchdowns and Marshall Whipkey and Brendan Crowe added two TDs each as McGuffey (5-0, 3-0) beat Beth-Center (4-1, 3-1) in the Century Conference.

Freedom 35, Ellwood City 13 — Zach Rosa threw for 213 yards and five touchdowns to lead Freedom (4-1, 3-1) to the Midwestern Conference win at Ellwood City (0-5, 0-3). Noah Yeck caught six passes for 107 yards and two touchdowns for the Bulldogs.

Burgettstown at South Side Beaver, ppd. — The Three Rivers Conference showdown was postponed because of lightning and will resume at noon Saturday at South Side Beaver.

Serra Catholic 35, Carlynton 15 — Matt Ulishney scored on a 78-yard kickoff return as Serra Catholic (3-2, 1-1) beat Carlynton (1-4, 0-3) in a Three Rivers Conference game. Nate Greenlee added a defensive touchdown for Serra Catholic on a 15-yard fumble recovery.

South Allegheny 27, Fort Cherry 12 — In the Three Rivers Conference, Antonio Epps ran for 157 yards and two touchdowns to lead South Allegheny (4-1, 3-0) to victory at Fort Cherry (2-3, 1-3). Truschel Maddox ran for 101 yards to pace Fort Cherry.

Class A

OLSH 42, Bishop Canevin 0 — Tyler Bradley threw for 278 yards and five touchdowns to lead No. 4 OLSH (5-0, 4-0) to the Big 7 shutout against Bishop Canevin (2-3, 0-2). Richard Banks caught five passes for 116 yards and three touchdowns while teammate Austin Wrigley added four receptions for 79 yards and two TDs.

Rochester 43, Union 6 — Noah Whiteleather ran for 167 yards and two touchdowns as Rochester (4-1, 2-1) beat Union (2-3, 1-3) in the Big 7 Conference. Parker Anthony added a touchdown on a 65-yard interception return for Rochester while teammate Rashawn Reid scored on a 75-yard kickoff return.

Bentworth 49, Mapletown 0 — Trent Cavanaugh ran for 251 yards and three touchdowns to lead Bentworth (3-2, 2-1) to the Tri-County South victory against Mapletown (0-5, 0-3). The game was called with 3:16 remaining in the third quarter because of lightning.

Jefferson-Morgan 46, Avella 13 — In the Tri-County South, Jonathan Wolfe rushed for 104 yards and five touchdowns to lead Jefferson-Morgan (2-3, 2-2) to the win against Avella (1-4, 0-2). Jake Broadwater added a defensive touchdown for Jefferson-Morgan on a 43-yard interception return.

Central Catholic 7, Bethel Park 6 — Gavin Thomson’s 5-yard touchdown reception from Dom Pieto and Jonathan Opalko’s extra point lifted No. 3 Central Catholic (4-1) to a nonconference victory. John Gummo hit 31- and 32-yard field goals for Bethel Park (2-2).

Elizabeth Forward 7, Quaker Valley 6 — Moments after tossing a pick-6 to put Elizabeth Forward in a hole, Warriors quarterback Zachary Benedek responded on the ensuing possession with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Alberts. In a game shortened to one half because of weather, Elizabeth Forward (4-0) limited Quaker Valley (1-3) to 53 yards of total offense, including just 16 on the ground, as it remained unbeaten.

Frazier 14, Brentwood 6 — Julian Muccioli ran for 148 yards and a 45-yard touchdown to lead Frazier (2-3) to a nonconference win against Brentwood (2-3). John Milcic threw for 114 yards and Brentwood’s only touchdown.

Gateway 62, Ringgold 0 — Brendan Majocha threw for 123 yards and two touchdowns as Class A No. 1 Gateway (5-0) blanked Class 4A Ringgold (0-5). Gateway scored 42 points in the first quarter.

South Fayette at Hopewell, ppd. — The nonconference game was suspended in the first half and will be continued at 10 a.m. Saturday at South Fayette.

Sto-Rox 58, Chartiers-Houston 0 — Eric Wilson threw for 239 yards — breaking 3,000 for his career — and four touchdowns to lead Sto-Rox (3-2) to a nonconference win at Chartiers-Houston (1-4). Vince Eagleton ran for 112 yards and two touchdowns, Darrell Anderson intercepted three passes and Amahd Pack scored on a 75-yard punt return and a 55-yard run for Sto-Rox.

Washington 41, California 25 — Zack Swartz threw for four touchdowns and ran 33 yards for another to lead Class 2A No. 3 Washington (4-1) to the win at Class A California (1-4).
