High school football roundup: No. 2 South Fayette tops New Castle

Drew Saxton threw for 278 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 2 South Fayette to a 42-33 victory over No. 5 New Castle in a WPIAL Class 4A Northwest Nine Conference showdown Friday night.

Noah Plack ran for 140 yards and two touchdowns for the Lions (7-0, 5-0), including a 5-yard game-winner in the fourth quarter.

Marcus Hooker ran for 172 yards and all five touchdowns for New Castle (4-3, 4-2).

Class 6A

North Allegheny 27, Penn Hills 16 — Luke Trueman threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead No. 5 North Allegheny (5-2, 3-1) over No. 2 Penn Hills (5-2, 3-2) in the Northern Seven Conference. Hollis Mathis threw for 165 yards and both Penn Hills touchdowns.

Class 5A

Woodland Hills 17, North Hills 9 — Tony Meredith ran for 100 yards and a touchdown to lead Woodland Hills (4-3, 4-1) to the Allegheny 9 Conference victory over visiting North Hills (3-4, 2-4). Hill Hirt threw for 134 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

Gateway 48, Plum 14 — Brady Walker completed 20 of 28 passes for 286 yards and six touchdowns to lead No. 5 Gateway (6-1, 4-1) to a Big East 9 victory. Jeremiah Josephs hauled in three touchdowns passes, while Courtney Jackson added two scoring receptions. Jordan Stancovich tallied six catches for 102 yards. Billy Guzzi and Dakota Sunday each had a touchdown run for Plum (2-5, 2-4), while Coulter Robb rushed 19 times for 111 yards.

McKeesport 48, Kiski Area 14 — Layton Jordan ran for 213 yards and three touchdowns, and John Harper ran for 101 yards and three touchdowns to guide No. 4 McKeesport (5-1, 5-1) to a Big East victory.

Class 4A

Laurel Highlands 25, West Mifflin 21 — In the Big 9 Conference, Ian Edenfield scored on a 47-yard blocked punt return and a 27-yard reception from Conner Basinger as Laurel Highlands (3-4, 1-4) beat West Mifflin (4-2, 3-2). Basinger threw for 185 yards and two touchdowns. Parrish Parker rushed for 134 yards and two touchdowns for West Mifflin.

Blackhawk 14, Ambridge 7 — Jarett Wright's 18-yard blocked-punt return in the fourth quarter gave Blackhawk (2-4, 2-3) the Northwest Nine Conference win at Ambridge (0-7, 0-6). Blackhawk's other touchdown was also scored on special teams when Kenny Gawley returned a punt 44 yards in the third quarter. Gawley added 176 rushing yards while Dozhay Crumb caught five passes for 119 yards and an 86-yard touchdown for Ambridge's only score.

Class 3A

Freeport 49, Apollo-Ridge 7 — Conor Selinger returned an interception 58 yards for a touchdown, one of five turnovers the Yellowjackets forced in an Allegheny Conference victory. Austin Romanchak ran for 81 yards and three touchdowns and passed for 86 and another score for Freeport (5-1, 4-0), while Selinger added a rushing touchdown. Cade Grguric scored on a 58-yard run for Apollo-Ridge (4-3, 2-3).

Keystone Oaks 20, Burrell 13 — The defending Allegheny Conference champion Golden Eagles (4-2, 3-1) stayed in the playoff race with a victory. Michael Daure rushed for 185 yards and one touchdown while quarterback Logan Shrubb passed for 218 yards and a score. Burrell's Seth Tatrn passed for 145 yards for the Bucs (1-6, 0-5).

Beaver 57, Ellwood City 14 — Gino Mavero ran for 149 yards and two touchdowns as No. 4 Beaver (5-2, 2-2) downed Ellwood City (2-4, 1-4) in the Beaver Valley Conference. Noah Yates added 115 rushing yards and a touchdown while teammate Brodie List threw for 100 yards and three TDs.

Central Valley 38, Hopewell 16 — Jaeden Gordan ran for 131 yards and pair of touchdowns on only three carries as Central Valley (4-3, 2-2) beat Hopewell (3-4, 1-2) in the Beaver Valley Conference. Tyler Sabo rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown to pace Hopewell.

Quaker Valley 42, Beaver Falls 14 — Ricky Guss threw for 188 yards and a touchdown and ran for three TDs as No. 3 Quaker Valley (7-0, 4-0) clinched a playoff berth by defeating Beaver Falls (1-5, 0-3) in the Beaver Valley Conference. Quaker Valley has started a season 7-0 for the first time since 1983.

McGuffey 49, Southmoreland 16 — Christian Clutter ran for three touchdowns as McGuffey (5-2, 4-1) beat Southmoreland (0-6, 0-4) in Interstate Conference play. Ronnie Robinson scored both of Southmoreland's touchdowns.

South Park 39, Waynesburg 6 — Damon Smith threw for 237 yards and three touchdowns and added 105 rushing yards and two TDs to lead South Park (3-3, 3-1) over Waynesburg (1-5, 1-5) in the Interstate Conference. In his first game of the season, South Park's Devin Turner caught five passes for a school-record 220 yards and touchdowns of 20, 91 and 43 yards.

Class 2A

Burgettstown 34, Beth-Center 22 — In the Century Conference, Ryan Lounder threw for 115 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 5 Burgettstown (6-0, 5-0) to victory at Beth-Center (6-1, 3-1). Lounder added a 26-yard touchdown run while teammate Nic Speer rushed for 135 yards. Trevor Anderson ran for 120 yards and two touchdowns for Beth-Center.

Charleroi 57, Chartiers-Houston 0 — Geno Pellegrini threw for 175 yards and four touchdowns to lead Charleroi (6-1, 3-1) to the Century Conference shutout at Chartiers-Houston (0-7, 0-5). Hunter Perry added 103 rushing yards and three touchdowns for Charleroi, which outgained Chartiers-Houston, 355 yards to 16.

Frazier 46, Brownsville 6 — In the Century Conference, JD Celaschi threw for 152 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 125 yards and another TD as Frazier (1-6, 1-4) picked up its first win of the season by defeating Brownsville (1-6, 1-4). Frazier led 39-0 at halftime.

Washington 55, Bentworth 7 — In the Century Conference, Zack Swartz completed 11 of 13 passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 2 Washington (6-0, 4-0) to victory over Bentworth (2-5, 2-4). Nick Welsh ran nine times for 138 yards and two touchdowns for Washington, which scored all of its points in the first half.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 48, Laurel 14 — Zack Rocco threw for 172 yards and four touchdowns to lead Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (5-2, 4-0) to the Midwestern Conference win against Laurel (1-6, 1-5). Joe Meinert added 173 rushing yards and a score and two receiving touchdowns for the Trojans.

Riverside 34, Neshannock 14 — Ben Hughes threw for 110 yards and two touchdowns in No. 4 Riverside's Midwestern Conference win over Neshannock (3-4, 2-2). LeMarcus Cleckley added 103 rushing yards for Riverside (5-1, 5-0). Neshannock's offense was paced by Seth Fehrs' 126 passing yards and a touchdown.

Brentwood 35, South Allegheny 32 — Michael Trent's 4-yard scoring pass to Evan Vickless in the fourth quarter gave Brentwood (4-3, 2-2) the Three Rivers Conference win against South Allegheny (1-5, 1-4). Trent threw for 187 yards and four touchdowns. Juwan Mitchel ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns for South Allegheny, which also got a pair of safeties from Chase Nicomatti.

East Allegheny 14, Avonworth 13 — Tamaine Underwood threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns as No. 3 East Allegheny (5-1, 4-0) edged Avonworth (2-4, 2-3) in Three Rivers Conference play. Avonworth's Derek Johncour threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns to Turner Grau, who caught nine passes for 217 yards.

Steel Valley 51, Carlynton 0 — Trevon Adams and Amonte Strothers returned punts for touchdowns as top-ranked Steel Valley (5-0, 3-0) shut out Carlynton (0-5, 0-4) in the Three Rivers Conference. Ronnie Lawrence's only two passes of the game went for touchdowns of 81 yards to Adams and 12 yards to Kameron Williams. Adams added 55 rushing yards and another touchdown.

Class A

OLSH 16, Rochester 13 — Tyler Bradley tossed for 164 yards and a touchdown as OLSH (5-2, 4-1) scored all of its points in the fourth quarter in its upset win over No. 2 Rochester (5-1, 5-1) in the Big 7 Conference.

Sto-Rox 36, Western Beaver 18 — Deion Liddell completed 13 of 14 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns as Sto-Rox (1-6, 1-4) scored 20 fourth-quarter points to upset Western Beaver (5-2, 4-2) in the Big 7 Conference. Eric Wilson added 110 passing yards and two touchdowns for Sto-Rox. Jeddy Young threw for 119 yards and one touchdown and ran for 113 yards and two scores in the loss.

Union 22, Cornell 20 — Michael Flowers ran for 75 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns as Union (6-1, 4-1) slipped past Cornell (0-6, 0-5) in the Big 7 Conference. Zaier Harrison threw for 177 yards and one touchdown and ran for two TDs for Cornell.

Fort Cherry 37, Avella 0 — Ryhan Culberson scored on an 85-yard kickoff return, 70-yard punt return and runs of 70 and 2 yards as Fort Cherry (5-1, 3-1) blanked Avella (0-7, 0-6) in the Tri-County South.

Jefferson-Morgan 21, Mapletown 6 — Colten Davidson ran for 180 yards and a touchdown to lead Jefferson-Morgan (3-4, 2-2) to the Tri-County South win against Mapletown (2-5, 1-4). The Rockets' Jacob Broadwater added touchdown passes of 19 and 42 yards to D.L. Garrett. Dylan Rush scored Mapletown's only touchdown.

California 42, Carmichaels 7 — Jelani Stafford rushed for four touchdowns to lead No. 3 California (7-0, 5-0) to the Tri-County South win against Carmichaels (4-2, 4-1).

Aliquippa 28, Clairton 0 — Tyriq Jones scored on two short touchdown runs, and Avante McKenzie added 104 rushing yards and a touchdown as Class 3A No. 1 Aliquippa (7-0) defeated Class A No. 5 Clairton (4-2) in a nonconference game. Aliquippa has yet to allow a defensive touchdown.

Bethel Park 27, Seneca Valley 14 — In nonconference play, Jon Doleno ran for one touchdown and returned an interception 67 yards for another score as Class 6A No. 3 Bethel Park (5-1) won at Seneca Valley (1-5). Anthony Chiccitt threw for 107 yards and a touchdown in the win.

Canon-McMillan 28, Shaler 21 — Davey Cooper scored on a 2-yard run with 2:56 left to lift Canon-McMillan (4-3) to a nonconference victory against Shaler (0-7). Elijah Turner led Canon-McMillan with 125 rushing yards while Big Macs' quarterback Jon Quinque threw for 133 yards and a touchdown. Daren Mizgorski threw for 248 yards and one touchdown to pace Shaler's offense.

Thomas Jefferson 34, Mars 6 — Shane Stump threw for one touchdown and ran for another as Class 4A No. 1 Thomas Jefferson (6-0) defeated Mars (4-3) in nonconference play. Justin Vigna added two rushing touchdowns in the win.

West Greene 47, Leechburg 14West Greene (5-2, 3-2) were paced by a dominant rushing performance from Ben Jackson, who toted the ball 19 times for 245 yards and two scores, in a nonconference win.

City League

Hollidaysburg 42, Allderdice 6 — Patrick Young rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns and Brady Walters threw for one score and rushed for another to lead Class 5A Hollidaysburg (4-3) to a nonconference victory at Class 6A Allderdice (4-3). The Dragons' lone score came with 1 minute left in the first half on a 9-yard run by Justin Morris.
