High school roundup for April 15, 2019: No. 1 Pine-Richland blanks Butler

Tommy Beam threw five no-hit innings with 11 strikeouts to lead Pine-Richland to a 10-0 win over Butler (2-8, 1-3) in a Section 1-6A baseball game Monday night at Kelly Automotive Park.

Troy LaNeve allowed one hit in relief as the top-ranked Rams improved to 9-3 overall and 4-0 in section play.

Josh Johnson homered, JD Armstrong had three hits, including two doubles, Matthew Wood smacked a triple and Jake Maley added a double for Pine-Richland. All four had two RBIs.

Burrell 9, Steel Valley 6 — Zach Miller singled twice and drove in three runs to help Burrell (5-2, 3-2) top Class 3A No. 3 Steel Valley (5-6, 4-2) in a Section 1 game. Jack Henderson also had two singles and drove in a pair of runs for the Bucs, who scored three runs in the second inning and led for the duration. Eli Ferris added two hits, including a double. Luke Virag relieved starter Tanner Spohn and got the final five outs to record the save. Brady Miller and Joe Kraft had two hits apiece for the Ironmen.

Washington 3, West Greene 1 — Ian McNaught was 2 for 3 with an RBI to help Washington (2-7) win a nonsection game. Cooper Sharp threw a complete game with seven strikeouts.

Softball

Apollo-Ridge 23, Sto-Rox 0 (3 inn.) — Morgan Shupe went 4 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs and pitched a three-inning no-hitter, striking out six, in Apollo-Ridge’s Section 2-2A rout of Sto-Rox (1-5, 0-5). Mollie Charlton hit a grand slam and drove in four runs for A-R (4-2, 4-2). Amber Earnest drove in four runs, while Emma Rametta and Sidney Shaeffer knocked in three apiece. Apollo-Ridge scored 13 runs in the first inning.

Sewickley Academy 12, Bishop Canevin 10 — Kendall Lightcap was 4 for 4, Theresa Wilson had three hits, including a home run, and Alexis Barlock added two hits, including a triple, as No. 5 Sewickley Academy (4-1, 4-1) won in Section 1-A.
