High school roundup for April 16, 2018: Central Catholic takes down No. 1 Butler

Vinnie Rauso tallied three hits and knocked in all three runs as Central Catholic knocked off No. 1-ranked Butler, 3-1, in a Section 1-6A baseball game Monday evening.

Brandon Gelpi was 2 for 4 with two doubles, Andrew Walker was 2 for 3 for the Vikings (6-3, 2-2). Marshall McGraw picked up the win.

Connor Ollio had a double and took the loss, for the Golden Tornado (5-1, 3-1).

Mt. Lebanon 2, Peters Township 1 (11 inn.) — Mark Palmerine hit an RBI single in the top of the 11th inning to lead Mt. Lebanon (5-5, 4-1) to a Section 3-6A victory.

Ethan Cuccarese was 3 for 4 for Mt. Lebanon. Bobby Kusinsky took the loss for Peters Township (5-6, 2-3).

West Mifflin 10, McGuffey 4 — Nick Ackermann was 2 for 3 with a double, home run and two RBIs as West Mifflin (6-3, 3-2) won in Section 3-4A.

Steel Valley 15, South Allegheny 0 (4 inn.) — Alex Ligeros was 4 for 4 with two doubles and seven RBIs as No. 5 Steel Valley (4-3, 3-1) won in Section 1-3A.

Softball

Moon 13, Mars 0 (6 inn.) — Marissa McGinness was 4 for 4 with four RBIs, and Morgan Toal and Steph Hytla each went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, as No. 3 Moon (5-2, 5-1) won in Section 3-5A. Lauren Niglio added three hits and Shannon Camardese had two hits and an RBI.

South Allegheny 5, West Mifflin 2 — South Allegheny (8-3, 4-2) scored four times in the top of the seventh to seal a nonsection win. Mikala Swearingen was 2 for 4 with a double, and Sydney Kirkwood doubled in two runs for the Gladiators.
