High school roundup for Dec. 15, 2018: Hempfield edges Belle Vernon in OT

Drew Coletta’s layup with 1 minute, 15 seconds remaining in overtime gave Hempfield the lead for good as the host Spartans beat Belle Vernon, 80-76, at the Westmoreland County Coaches Association Shootout.

Jules Nicholls scored a game-high 28 points for Hempfield (4-1). Christian Zilli added 14, Coletta had 12 and Reed Hipps scored 11.

Belle Vernon rallied from a 17-point deficit in the second half, while Hempfield came back from a five-point deficit in overtime.

Cam Nusser led Belle Vernon (0-5) with 21 points, with Larry Callaway and Mitchell Pholot adding 15 apiece and Hunter Kuokonen scoring 10.

Monessen 52, Burrell 49 — Taylon Lowe banked home a 3-point shot at the buzzer to lift the Greyhounds (1-3) to a victory over the Bucs (1-5) at the Westmoreland County Coaches Association Boys Basketball Showcase at Hempfield.

Devin Whitlock led Monessen with 17 points, while Dishon and DeWayne Howell each added 11. Logan Bitar paced Burrell with a game-best 19 points, while Seth Fischbach and Logan Phillips added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Mt. Pleasant 47, Southmoreland 41 Mt. Pleasant (1-4) won its first game of the season, the Vikings’ first victory under new coach Allan Billinsky, at the WCCA Showcase at Hempfield.

Jacob Johnson made all 11 of his free throws and scored a game-high 24 points for the Vikings. Cade Richter led the Scotties (2-3) with 14 points and Ronnie Robinson added 11.

Seneca Valley 68, Shady Side Academy 52 — Mason Bush scored 21 points and hit five 3-pointers and Marcus Might and Trey Berringer added 16 points each as Seneca Velley (3-2) beat Shady Side Academy (2-3) in nonsection play. Grady Munroe scored 16 points for Shady Side Academy, while teammates Colm O’Connor and Will Cochran tallied 12 an 10 points, respectively.

Shaler 76, North Hills 59 — Justin DeSabato scored 25 points to lead Shaler (4-1) to a nonsection win against North Hills (2-2). Jordan Albright’s 21 points paced North Hills.

Carmichaels 61, West Greene 33 — In nonsection play, Matt Barrish scored 19 points to lead Carmichaels (4-1) to the win against West Greene (1-4). Al Cree added 12 points for Carmichaels.

New Castle 93, Freeport 60 — Michael Wells led five players in double figures as Class 4A No. 1 New Castle (4-1) beat Freeport in The Clash at New Castle. The Red Hurricanes also got double-digit scoring performances from Payne Prowell (15 points), Sheldon Cox (14), Drew Cox (13) and Demetris McKnight (13). Aiden Skraski scored a team-high 16 points for Freeport (3-2), while Nolan Plocki added 14 and Jalen Brown and Garret Schaffhauser had 10 apiece.

Girls basketball

North Catholic 56, Glenn (N.C.) 26 — Tess Myers scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds as North Catholic (2-0) defeated Glenn (N.C.) at the She Got Game Classic in Washington, D.C. Trojans guard Kylee Lewandowski held Jacee Busick, Glenn’s best player with 15 Division I offers, to only two points.

Keystone Oaks 67, Seton LaSalle 32 — Gillian Piccolino scored 31 points and Isabella Bogdan added 22 points as Keystone Oaks (3-2) defeated Seton LaSalle (1-3) in a nonsection matchup.
