High school roundup for Dec. 17, 2018: Allderdice tops Latrobe in Class 6A showdown

Two of the top boys basketball teams in the state squared off in a Class 6A showdown Monday night, and Allderdice showed it will be a team to be reckowned with this year.

Bobby Clifford scored 24 points, and Jackson Blaufeld added 16 as the Dragons beat WPIAL No. 1 Latrobe, 89-60, in a nonsection game.

Bryce Butler scored 28 points for Latrobe (5-1), which had rolled to five victories to start the season.

City League favorite Allderdice (3-1) has now won three straight since a 68-52 loss to Lower Merion to start the season.

Penn-Trafford 77, Connellsville 51 — Kevin Stinelli and Brayden Puskar each scored 16 points to lift Penn-Trafford (4-0, 1-0) to a Section 3-6A victory. Zach Rocco added 11 points, and Ethan Carr had 10 for the Warriors.

Derry 61, South Park 55 — Justin Huss had 17 points, and Ryan Bushey added 16, as Derry (3-1) scored a nonsection victory.

Elizabeth Forward 61, Mt. Pleasant 55 — Chase Vaughn and Patrick Filson each had 16 points to help Elizabeth Forward (2-2) to a nonsection win. Jacob Johnson led Mt. Pleasant (1-5) with 13 points.

Ringgold 71, Frazier 41 — Demetrius Butler’s 19 points led Ringgold (3-1) to a nonsection win.

Girls basketball

North Allegheny 67, Seneca Valley 47 — Rachel Martindale had 20 points to lead No. 1 North Allegheny (5-0, 3-0) to a Section 1-6A win. Brynn Serbin added 17 points, and Allison Lyon had 16 for the Tigers. McKenna Gross scored 18 for No. 5 Seneca Valley (5-1, 1-1).

Bethel Park 48, Upper St. Clair 39 — Olivia Westphal had 14 points, and Madelyn Dziezgowski added 13 as No. 3 Bethel Park (5-0, 2-0) won in Section 2-6A.

Thomas Jefferson 50, West Allegheny 43 — Alyssa DeAngelo had 17 points, and Jenna Clark added 14 as Thomas Jefferson (5-1, 2-0) won a Section 1-5A game. Hannah Lindemuth scored 19 points for West Allegheny (3-2, 0-2).

Trinity 47, South Fayette 41 — Courtney Dahlquist had 13 points, and Kaylin Vernick added 12 as Trinity (3-2, 2-0) picked up a Section 1-5A win. Clare Relihan scored 12 points for South Fayette (4-1, 1-1).

Mars 54, Gateway 42 — Tai Johnson and Bella Pelaia each had 14 points to lead No. 2 Mars (5-0, 2-0) to a Section 2-5A win over No. 4 Gateway (4-1, 1-1). Mary Kromka and Lexi Jackson each scored 15 for the Gators.

Hopewell 55, New Castle 40 — Siara Conley had 18 points and Alexis Thompson scored 16 as Hopewell (3-2, 1-1) won in Section 2-4A. Both Conley and Thompson recorded 13 rebounds, as well.

Keystone Oaks 46, Ambridge 35 — In Section 2-4A, Isabella Bogdon had 16 points, and Gillian Piccolino added 15 as Keystone Oaks (4-2, 1-1) earned a win. Aniya Walker had 27 points for Ambridge (3-1, 1-1).

Carlynton 51, East Allegheny 44 — Jada Lee had 18 points as Carlynton (4-1, 1-1) upset No. 1 East Allegheny (4-1, 1-1) in a Section 3-3A matchup.

Amaia Johnson had 27 points for East Allegheny.

Serra Catholic 65, Brentwood 58 — Emam Nilson’s 18 points guided No. 3 Serra Catholic (3-1, 1-0) to a Section 2-2A win. Natalie Murrio and Anna Betz each scored 14 points for No. 4 Brentwood (4-1, 1-1).

Frazier 67, Fort Cherry 51 — Brooke Poling poured in 33 points, and Sierra Twigg added 19 as Frazier (3-2, 2-0) won in Section 3-2A.

Mt. Lebanon 60, Hempfield 43 — Patrice Smith had 18 points, and Jamey Napoleon added 15 as No. 5 Mt. Lebanon (3-2, 2-0) won a Section 2-6A game. Sarah Liberatore had 11 points to lead Hempfield (2-3, 0-3), which trailed 24-17 at halftime.

Penn-Trafford 77, Albert Gallatin 48 — Stephanie O’Donnell had a career-high 20 points as Penn-Trafford (2-3, 1-1) captured a Section 3-5A victory. Allie Prady had 13 points, Kenzie Powell scored 12, Bella Long had 11 and Reaghan Panza tallied 10 for the Warriors.

Burrell 68, Greensburg Salem 64 — Kaylen Sharrow had 30 points and Allison Fisher added 20 as Burrell (2-3, 1-1) scored a Section 1-4A win. Sharrow hit three of her five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Megan Kallock had 42 points for Greensburg Salem (2-4, 0-2), which was outscored 23-16 in the final quarter.

Southmoreland 44, McKeesport 23 — Maggie Moore had 13 points to pace Southmoreland (5-1, 1-1) in a Section 3-4A victory.

Mt. Pleasant 57, Yough 10 — Chloe Jaworski scored 17 points, including three 3-pointers, as Mt. Pleasant (2-3, 1-1) won in Section 3-4A. Tara Tuccarello added 10 points for the Vikings, who opened on a 26-2 run.

Belle Vernon 50, West Mifflin 44 — In Section 3-4A, Lindsay Steeber had 16 points, and Rachel Wobrak added 11 as Belle Vernon (2-3, 2-0) earned a win.

Winchester Thurston 64, Jeannette 45 — Nya Nicholson had 21 points to lead Winchester Thurston (3-2, 1-1) to a Section 2-2A win. Dymond Crawford scored 26 points for Jeannette (2-3, 1-1), which was outscored 20-5 in the second quarter.

Monessen 61, Geibel 17 — Zykavia Hairston had 12 points, and Kendelle Weston and Qitarah Hardison added 10 points as Monessen (1-5, 1-1) won in Section 2-A.

Greensburg Central Catholic 70, Riverview 46 — Bella Skatell had 21 points, and Melina Maietta added 20 as No. 3 Greensburg Central Catholic (4-0) earned a nonsection win. Francesca Lio had 15 points for Riverview (2-4).

Freeport 76, Highlands 37 — Harley Holloway poured in a game-high 17 points for Class 4A No. 5 Freeport (3-1, 2-0) in a Section 1 win. Sidney Shemanski and Samantha Clark had 15 points apiece for the Yellowjackets and Madeline Clark scored 10. Maria Fábregas had 10 points for Highlands (1-3, 0-2).

Deer Lakes 55, Valley 23 — Reese Hasley and Abby Buechel scored 15 points as Deer Lakes (5-0, 2-0) cruised to a Section 3 3-A win over Valley. Auveonna Perkins scored 10 points for the Vikings (1-5, 0-2).

Fox Chapel 56, Pine-Richland 51 — Jess Paper and Ellie Schwartzman scored 14 points apiece to help Fox Chapel score a Section 1-6A victory at Pine-Richland (2-4, 0-2). Paper connected on four 3-pointers. Domenica Delaney added 12 points for the Foxes (5-1, 2-1) and Claire Fenton scored 10. Meghan Luellen had a game-high 16 points for the Rams.

Knoch 39, Indiana 34 — Madilyn Boyer scored a game-high 14 points to lead Knoch (4-1, 2-0) to a Section 1-4A victory. Hope Cook led Indiana (2-3, 2-2) with nine points.

Armstrong 44, Kiski Area 38 — Loryn Bowser scored a game-high 18 points as Armstrong took a 22-13 lead into halftime and held off Kiski Area to earn a Section 2-5A win. Shaelyn Clark added 10 points for Armstrong (3-3, 2-0). Hannah Potter scored 12 points, and Samantha Worthing added 11 for Kiski Area (1-4, 0-2).

Hockey

Franklin Regional 8, Quaker Valley 7 — Mathieu Sliva had a goal and three assists to lead Franklin Regional (7-3-0-2) to a PIHL Class AA victory. Trent Lunden and Kevin Cakanac each had two goals in the win.

Hempfield 5, Hampton 4 — Matthew Traczynski, Aiden Dunlap, Hunter Smiles, Aiden Edwards scored to lead Hempfield (8-2) to a PIHL Class AA win.

Burrell 7, Ringgold 6 — Giovanni Palombo had two goals and three assists, leading Burrell (12-0) to a come-from-behind victory over Ringgold in a PIHL Division II game. Tyler Stewart added a pair of goals for the Bucs, who overcame a 4-0 deficit in the first period. Logan Schoepf, Stephen Yezovich and Dylan Zelonka scored the other goals. Bradley Bujdos tallied three goals and two assists, and Zach Kalinowski added two goals and two assists for Ringgold (9-3).

Plum 5, Armstrong 2 — Nicholas Pushic scored two goals in the third period, including the go-ahead marker, to lift Plum (3-6) to a Class AA win. Pushic and Logan Schlegel each finished with two goals and an assist for the Mustangs, while Donovan Palmer added a goal. Maddox Rearic and Jacob Townsend scored for Armstrong (2-9).

Sewickley Academy 7, Deer Lakes 5 — Shane Miller had a hat trick, including two goals in the third period, but Deer Lakes’ rally fell short in a PIHL Class A loss. The Lancers (1-9-1) allowed four consecutive goals in the third period and fell behind 6-2 before scoring three straight late in the third to cut the lead to one. Matthew Hajdukiewicz scored four goals for Sewickley Academy (6-5), including one in the final minute that sealed the game.
