High school roundup for Feb. 18, 2024: No. 15 Penn-Trafford stuns No. 2 Baldwin in 5A 1st round

Zach Feldman scored 20 points and No. 15 Penn-Trafford pulled off the upset of the WPIAL boys basketball playoffs thus far, beating No. 2 Baldwin, 60-45, in the Class 5A first round Tuesday night.
Brayden Stone added 16 points and Evan Gross had 10 for the Warriors (14-9), who took control of the game with a 19-6 scoring advantage in the third quarter. Feldman capped the quarter with a steal and a bucket in the final seconds to give Penn-Trafford a 42-28 lead.
Caden Cherico scored 13 points and Jackson Sgattoni added 10 for the Highlanders (21-2), who had won 12 in a row, claiming their first section title since 1986. The Warriors, who finished fourth in their section, will meet No. 10 Mars in the quarterfinals Friday.
Aliquippa 83, New Brighton 29 – Josh Pratt scored 15 points, hitting the 1,000-point mark for his career, as No. 1 Aliquippa (18-4) used a 28-1 first quarter to run away in its Class 3A opening-round win. Qa’lil Goode led the Quips with 16 points while Jeremiah Pratt added 15 and TVonn Parchman Jr. had 14. Aliquippa will meet No. 9 Shady Side Academy in the quarterfinals Friday. Dash Graham scored 16 points for No. 16 New Brighton (6-14).
Bishop Canevin 59, Seton LaSalle 57 – Drew Allen scored 15 points to lead No. 4 Bishop Canevin (14-9) past No. 13 Seton LaSalle (10-13) in a tightly contested Class 3A first-round game. The Crusaders will face No. 5 Keystone Oaks in the quarterfinals Friday.
Ellwood City 55, South Park 51 – Chucky Schweinsberg hit four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points as No. 10 Ellwood City (14-9) overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to knock off No. 7 South Park (15-7) in the Class 3A first round. Maykel Cuevas added 11 points for the Wolverines, who will take on No. 2 South Allegheny in Friday’s quarterfinals. Cooper Hochendoner scored 18 points, Luke Scarff added 13 and Danny Baustista had 10 for the Eagles.
Keystone Oaks 72, Ligonier Valley 57 – Erond Jakupi had 25 points and Tulio Watts followed with 22 as No. 5 Keystone Oaks (17-6) used a 24-11 second quarter to pull away in its Class 3A first-round win. Ethan Spivak scored 14 points for the Golden Eagles, who will take on No. 4 Bishop Canevin on Friday. Parker Hollick led three double-digit scorers for No. 12 Ligonier Valley (13-9) with 22 points. Michael Graver-Vargulish had 18, and Michael Wisniewski added 11.
Mars 50, South Fayette 46 – Ben Detisch scored 19 points and Austen Wroblewski added 11 to power No. 10 Mars (13-10) to a comeback win in the Class 5A first round. The Fightin’ Planets trailed 16-6 after the first quarter and tied the score by halftime with an 18-8 run. Mars will meet No. 15 Penn-Trafford in the quarterfinals Friday. Stefano Vazio scored 19 points, Gavin Orosz added 13 and Tyson Wright had 12 for No. 7 South Fayette (15-8).
Mohawk 59, Waynesburg 40 – Bobby Fadden led a trio of double-digit scorers with 27 in a Class 3A opening-round win for No. 3 Mohawk (18-5). Drew Wrona contributed 17 and Joey Nail had 11 for the Warriors, who will take on No. 6 Southmoreland on Friday. Alex Eck scored 12, Cole Headlee 11 and Dane Woods 10 for the Raiders.
Montour 70, Franklin Regional 42 – Ama Sow scored 24 points as top-seeded Montour (22-1) took a 20-8 lead after one quarter and rolled to a Class 5A first-round win. Colton Straight added 17 and Andrew Alston had 14 for the Spartans, who will meet No. 9 Latrobe in the quarterfinals Friday. Connor Crossey scored 14 points and Jonah Johnston added 12 for No. 16 Franklin Regional (12-12).
Moon 49, Gateway 42 – Michael Santicola scored 25 points and Amir Turner chipped in 11 for No. 5 Moon (18-5) in a Class 5A first-round victory. The Tigers will take on No. 4 Chartiers Valley in the quarterfinals Friday. Mykel Bruce-McCrommon led No. 12 Gateway (13-9) with 11 points.
Peters Township 63, Penn Hills 30 – Nick McCullough (16) and Dylan Donovan (16) combined for 32 points in a Class 5A first-round win for No. 6 Peters Township (16-7). Jake Wetzel pulled down 12 rebounds in the win. The Indians advance to take on No. 3 Uniontown on Friday.
Shady Side Academy 51, McGuffey 31 – No. 9 Shady Side Academy (10-12) had a pair of 16-point scorers in Seamus Riordan and Cam Mallory in a Class 3A first-round win. No. 8 McGuffey (16-7) was led by Ayden Cunningham’s 13 points. Shady Side Academy will face No. 1 Aliquippa on Friday in the quarterfinals.
South Allegheny 61, Charleroi 32 – Cam Epps hit five 3-pointers and finished with 24 points and Drew Cook made four 3s and scored 18 points to lead No. 2 South Allegheny (20-3) to a Class 3A first-round win. The Gladiators will face No. 10 Ellwood City in Friday’s quarterfinals. Jackson Keranko led No. 15 Charleroi (10-12) with 10 points.
Uniontown 59, Hampton 42 – Notorious Grooms scored 24 points and Calvin Winfrey followed with 22 as No. 3 Uniontown (20-3) took a 16-4 lead after one quarter and cruised to a Class 5A first-round win. Kelan Milsom added 11 points for the Red Raiders, who will take on No. 6 Peters Township in the quarterfinals Friday. Zach Danner scored 16 points and Jonas Cupps added 11 for No. 14 Hampton (11-12).
Girls basketball
Aliquippa 79, Carmichaels 6 – Carla Brown scored 33 points to lead No. 2 Aliquippa (17-4) past No. 15 Carmichaels (3-19) in the Class 2A first round. The Quips will face No. 10 Rochester in Friday’s quarterfinals.
Chartiers-Houston 51, Brentwood 28 – Ava Kolovich scored 13 points and Ava Capozzoli and Allison Wingard added 12 each as No. 6 Chartiers-Houston (19-4) took a 27-12 lead at halftime of a Class 2A first-round win. The Bucs will face No. 3 Winchester Thurston in Friday’s quarterfinals. Paige Boehm scored 14 points and Ay’maree Henry added 10 for No. 11 Brentwood (8-11).
First Baptist Academy 49, Cheswick Christian Academy 38 – Ellie Hennick hit for 31 points to power First Baptist Academy to a Southwestern Christian Athletic Conference playoff win. Grace Kostick scored 14 points, Lauren Weng added 13 and Abby Louis had nine for Cheswick Christian.
Fort Cherry 59, California 29 – Julie Closer had 16 points in a Class 2A first-round win for No. 5 Fort Cherry (19-3). Olivia Kemp scored 15 and Jazlyn Martino had 12 to help the Rangers advance to the quarterfinals against No. 4 South Side on Friday.
Laurel 44, Beth-Center 32 – Maelee Hill scored 16 points and Shyan Tindall added 15 as No. 8 Laurel (10-13) earned a Class 2A first-round win. The Spartans will face top-seeded Neshannock in the quarterfinals Friday. Violet Trump led No. 9 Beth-Center (13-9) with 18 points.
Neshannock 58, Apollo-Ridge 18 – Payton Newman scored 16 points, Nina Medure followed with 12 and Jaidon Nogay finished with 11 to send top-seeded Neshannock (21-2) to a Class 2A first-round win. The Lancers will meet No. 8 Laurel in the quarterfinals Friday. Kyler Toland and Madison Hughley scored six points each for No. 16 Apollo-Ridge (10-12).
South Side 54, Ellis School 16 – No. 4 South Side (18-5) took care of No. 13 Ellis School (8-10) in the Class 2A first round. The Rams will meet No. 5 Fort Cherry in the quarterfinals Friday.
Winchester Thurston 62, Burgettstown 28 – Sky Still scored 13 points to lead five players in double figures for No. 3 Winchester Thurston (19-3) in a Class 2A first-round win. DaShae Cochran, Aleah Cooper, Alexis Bansah and Marteece Williams each added 10 points for the Bears, who will face No. 6 Chartiers-Houston in Friday’s quarterfinals. Savanna Rush scored 11 points to lead No. 14 Burgettstown (8-14).

Bishop McCort 5, Latrobe 1 – Mark Pazniak had a goal and two assists and Jake Johnson made 46 saves to lead Bishop McCort (8-10-1) to a Class 2A win. Sammy Treager, Isaiah Lieb and Mikael Vasilevskis each had a goal and an assist. Colton Goodlin scored for Latrobe (13-5).
Canon-McMillan 7, Norwin 2 – Luka Grkman had two goals and an assist and Grayson Costa collected a goal and three assists to lead Canon-McMillan (6-11-2) to a Class 2A victory. Brenden Lomaga added a goal and two assists. Dom Cerilli and Josh Toth scored for Norwin (1-16-1).
Greensburg Salem 8, Westmont Hilltop 1 – Nathan Ross scored a hat trick and added an assist for Greensburg Salem (10-10) in a Class A win. Jeremiah Faulk had two goals, while Cameron Cherok, Jayden Ostrawski and Jake Fink also scored. Colby Carlson recorded the lone goal for Westmont Hilltop (1-18-1).
Morgantown 16, Trinity 3 – Cooper Cox collected four goals and three assists, Geno Valenti added a hat trick with an assist, and John DiBartolomeo and Jacob Hollander each had two goals and four assists to lead Morgantown (19-1) to a Division 2 win. Seamus Coyle had two goals and an assist and Zachery Jibits added a goal and two assists for Trinity (5-11-1).
North Catholic 6, Hampton 1 – Beckett Dunn had two goals and an assist and Ty Murray and Shane Schollaert each added a goal and an assist to help North Catholic (13-7) to a Class A win. Eli Bukovac scored for Hampton (7-12-1).
Quaker Valley 5, McDowell 2 – Jacob Keisel netted two goals in a Class A victory for Quaker Valley (18-1-1). Max Modrovich and Matthias Lezama each had a goal and an assist, while Hunter Kronk rounded out the goal scorers for the Quakers. Alec Coon and Wendall Natividad scored for McDowell (7-13).
