High school roundup for Feb. 3, 2025: Peters Township clinches sole possession of section title

Natalie Wetzel scored 23 points to lead Peters Township to a 58-49 victory over Thomas Jefferson, clinching sole possession of the Section 4-5A girls basketball title Monday night.

Taylor McCullough added 11 and Bri Morreale finished with 10 for Peters (17-2, 10-0). Maggie Spell scored 15 while Riley McCabe and Ally Wilson contributed 10 points apiece for the Jaguars (17-3, 9-2).

Aquinas Academy 51, Eden Christian 31 – Kay Chufo produced 12 points, Becca Guillen followed with 11 and Elliot Keverline scored 10 for Aquinas Academy (12-6, 9-3) in a Section 1-A win. Emmie Smith finished with 14 points and Phebe Falavolito added 10 for Eden Christian (5-12, 4-8).

Avella 45, Bishop Canevin 39 –Led by 17 points from Syd Strope and 14 from Ava Frank, Avella (9-12, 4-9) defeated Bishop Canevin (10-8, 5-7) in Section 2-A. Kya Cooley led all scorers with 20 and Isabella Sysak added 11 for the Crusaders.

Avonworth 66, South Allegheny 19 – Greta O’Brien scored 19 points to lead Avonworth (12-7, 8-4) past South Allegheny (4-16, 4-9) in Section 2-3A.

Belle Vernon 37, Mt. Pleasant 18 – Aubrey Brown had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds to lead Belle Vernon (9-11, 5-7) to a Section 3-4A win over Mt. Pleasant (4-15, 4-9).

Beth-Center 45, Bentworth 28 – Violet Trump led all scorers with 22 points and Kyleigh McDaniel added 10 to lead Beth-Center (13-7, 7-2) to a Section 3-2A win. Bella Moyer and Willow Eckels each scored nine points for Bentworth (7-13, 3-6).

Blackhawk 62, Hampton 25 – Aubree Hupp led with 30 points and Andrea Kinger added 10 for Blackhawk (18-2, 12-0) in a Section 2-4A win. Erin Baker scored 11 points for Hampton (10-9, 5-6).

Burrell 70, Valley 30 – Adrianna Vogel led with 19 points, Jules Fisher followed with 14 and McKenna Miller and Casey Brancato added 12 points apiece for Burrell (13-8, 8-5) in a Section 1-4A win. Janelle Norman scored 12 points for Valley (2-18, 1-12).

Butler 40, Pine-Richland 37 – Amelia McMichael scored 13 points to lead Butler (10-9, 5-4) to a Section 1-6A win. Cate Gentile produced 21 points for Pine-Richland (7-12, 6-2).

Central Valley 66, Ambridge 14 – Nyah Hayes scored 18 points and Dominique Douglas tallied 12 for Central Valley (13-7, 7-4) in a Section 2-4A win. Neveah Cox led Ambridge (1-14, 0-11) with nine points.

Chartiers-Houston 59, Carmichaels 20 – Ava Capozzoli scored 16 points, Allison Wingard added 13 and Ava Kolovich chipped in 11 in a Section 3-2A win for Chartiers-Houston (16-4, 8-0) over Carmichaels (2-17, 2-7).

Clairton 74, Mapletown 24 – Iyanna Wade went off for 41 points to power Clairton (15-4, 11-2) to a Section 2-A win. Helena Cumpston had nine points for Mapletown (3-18, 1-12).

Deer Lakes 54, Steel Valley 24 – Anna Clark scored 19 points and Riley Parise contributed 10 to lead Deer Lakes (13-7, 8-5) past Steel Valley (2-17, 2-9) in Section 2-3A.

Elizabeth Forward 62, Yough 33 – Michelle Jellison put up 29 points and Kaelynn Settles added 14 to lead Elizabeth Forward (16-3, 13-0) to a Section 3-4A win over Yough (11-10, 5-8).

Franklin Regional 57, Armstrong 17 – Madison DeRiggi put up 22 points, Toryn Fulton scored 15 and Anna Novelli added 10 for Franklin Regional (15-5, 11-0) in a Section 1-5A win over Armstrong (3-16, 2-10).

Fort Cherry 74, Northgate 12 – Brooke Cornali dropped 15 points while Julie Klose and Amarah Martino each scored 10 as Fort Cherry (16-2, 8-0) clinched at least a share of the Section 2-2A title with a win over Northgate (1-19, 0-9).

Geibel Catholic 65, Monessen 39 – Emma Larkin led with 37 points and Mallory Clemmer followed with 19 for Geibel Catholic (20-1, 12-1) in a Section 2-A win. Madison Johnson scored 30 points for Monessen (5-13, 2-11).

Greensburg Salem 48, Latrobe 46 – Mya Heasley made five 3-pointers and finished with 19 points while Regan Kerr added 13 as Greensburg Salem (12-8, 5-6) went on an 8-0 run in the final 1:44 of the game to defeat Latrobe (10-9, 6-5) in Section 2-5A. Brylee Bodnar scored 17, Carley Berk finished with 11 and Maggie Maiers had 10 for the Wildcats.

Indiana 60, West Mifflin 28 – Julia Antonucci led with 17 points, Emily Betsinger followed with 13, Laken Kugler had 11 and Addy Hutton added 10 for Indiana (16-4, 10-1) in a Section 2-5A win. A’ryah Scott scored 10 points for West Mifflin (2-15, 0-10).

Keystone Oaks 54, Waynesburg 24 – Hannah York put up 18 points and Laney Wagner added 12 as Keystone Oaks (16-1, 9-1) beat Waynesburg (8-10, 3-7) in Section 3-3A.

Laurel 51, Shenango 29 – Maelee Hill scored 21 points and Jael Henderson added 14 points to lead Laurel (8-13, 4-5) to a Section 1-2A win. Amara DeFrank scored 14 points for Shenango (1-18, 0-9).

Laurel Highlands 73, Ringgold 25 – Ayrianna Sumpter, Sierra Jenkins and Miya Harris scored 14 points apiece and Righteous Richardson added 11 for Laurel Highlands (15-5, 10-3) in a Section 3-4A win over Ringgold (7-13, 1-11).

Ligonier Valley 47, East Allegheny 19 – Adleigh Myers scored 10 points and Gabby Springer had nine to lead Ligonier Valley (6-13, 4-8) to a Section 2-3A win. Ronniya Lawrence scored eight points for East Allegheny (1-17, 0-13).

Mars 49, New Castle 30 – Grace Zatezalo and Alexis Cashdollar scored nine points apiece to lead Mars (12-8, 6-5) past New Castle (7-13, 0-11) in a Section 3-5A win.

McGuffey 46, Washington 40 – Olivia Woods scored her 1,000th career point and finished with 21 to power McGuffey (13-7, 7-4) past Washington (7-12, 4-7) in Section 3-3A. Taylor Schumacher added 18 and Lexi Ewig had 15 for the Highlanders.

Moon 53, West Allegheny 49 – Maria Depner scored 25 points to push Moon (10-7, 5-5) past West Allegheny (10-10, 3-8) in a Section 3-5A win.

Mt. Lebanon 57, Connellsville 24 – Payton Collins sank five 3-pointers and finished with 27 points to lead Mt. Lebanon (12-8, 5-4) to a Section 2-6A win over Connellsville (3-16, 0-9).

Neshannock 66, Rochester 51 – Sophia Bonner scored 23 points, Payton Newman had 12 and Jaidon Nogay added 11 to lead Neshannock (19-2, 8-1) to a Section 1-2A win. Tia Yellock scored 16 points and Marque Taylor had 14 for Rochester (9-10, 5-4).

Oakland Catholic 49, Derry 19 – Makayla Canty scored 10 points and Josie Fontana had nine for Oakland Catholic (17-3, 12-1) in a Section 1-4A win. Jane Huss scored 15 points for Derry (4-15, 1-12).

OLSH 64, New Brighton 4 – Claudia Ierullo dropped 22 points as OLSH (18-2, 13-0) shut down New Brighton (0-17, 0-13) in Section 1-3A.

Penn-Trafford 63, Kiski Area 41 – Kam Pieper scored 17 points and Lauren Marton produced 13 to lead Penn-Trafford (20-0, 11-0) to a Section 2-5A victory. Gianna DeVito produced 15 for Kiski Area (10-10, 4-7).

Plum 48, Gateway 17 – Serena Carnahan scored 15 points and Tamia West had 11 for Plum (8-11, 6-5) in a Section 1-5A win over Gateway (0-16, 0-10).

Quaker Valley 43, Mohawk 14 – Mimi Thiero scored 23 points to lead Quaker Valley (12-8, 9-4) to a Section 1-3A win over Mohawk (6-14, 4-9).

Riverview 49, Ellis School 34 – Katerina Tsambis scored 21 points and Lily Bauer added 15 to lead Riverview (13-3, 8-1) to a Section 4-2A win. Angelina Jones scored 17 points for Ellis School (6-8, 3-5).

South Park 62, Southmoreland 10 – Bella Stromberg scored 16 points for South Park (14-5, 11-2) in a Section 3-4A win over Southmoreland (3-17, 1-12).

Springdale 42, Western Beaver 39 (OT) – Ashlyn Ferderbar scored 15 points and Cara Leahy added 12 as Sprongdale (10-10, 7-5) defeated Western Beaver (4-16, 2-11) in overtime in Section 1-A.

St. Joseph 61, Sewickley Academy 18 – Gia Richter led all scorers with 17 points, Bella Bartolovic followed with 15 and Gemma Hornack added 13 for St. Joseph (13-6, 9-3) in a Section 1-A win. Grace Jardini scored 10 points to lead Sewickley Academy (4-14, 3-10).

Trinity 61, Albert Gallatin 36 – Gabby Rieg scored 16 points and Vitt Emerich added 12 to lead Trinity (9-9, 4-7) to a Section 4-5A win. Mya Glisan scored 16 points and Grayce Panos had 11 for Albert Gallatin (7-12, 1-11).

Union 74, Leechburg 27 – Kylie Fruehstorfer scored 21 points, Maggie Joseph had 16 and Olivia Benedict added 12 to lead Union (20-0, 13-0) to a Section 1-A win. Addie Zanotto and Josalyn Collini scored nine points apiece for Leechburg (2-15, 2-10).

Upper St.Clair 66, Hempfield 43 – Rylee Kalocay put up 30 points to power Upper St. Clair (14-5, 7-2) to a Section 2-6A win. Meredith Huzjak contributed 15 for the Panthers. Allie Cervola scored 13 and Ava Shipman finished with 11 for Hempfield (10-10, 2-7).

West Greene 67, Serra Catholic 61 (OT) – Kendra Tharp scored 28 points, Sammi Zimmerman had 15 and Kylee Davis added 10 to push West Greene (12-7, 6-6) to a Section 2-A win in overtime. Bella Dumbroski scored 28 points and Abby Genes had 21 for Serra Catholic (12-8, 10-3).

Boys basketball

Carrick 69, Perry 34 – Kelenn Ward scored 20 points and Treshaun Beasley followed with 18 to power Carrick (11-8, 4-3) to a City League win. Brayden Fisher added 13 and Stephon Malloy had 10 for the Raiders. Honor Davis led Perry (1-14, 1-6) with 10 points.

Chartiers Valley 85, Blackhawk 61 – Chartiers Valley (18-3, 9-2) got 30 points from Jayden Davis, 18 from Julian Semplice and 13 from Danny Slizik in a Section 4-5A win. Tyler Heckathorn dropped 24 points, Justin Shaner added 15 and Carter Davs chipped in 10 for Blackhawk (6-13, 3-9).

Frazier 53, Brownsville 45 – Dalian McManus scored 19 points, Kolby Stewart added 17 points and 12 rebounds and Conlan Higbee chipped in 10 points to lead Frazier (5-15) to a nonsection win. Jaiden Praster led Brownsville (4-16) with 18 points.

Springdale 80, California 54 – Peru Chapman scored 17 points to lead five players in double figures for Springdale (12-7, 6-6) in a Section 1-2A win over California (2-16, 0-12). Robby Simmen added 14, Liam Dexter 12 and John Duku and Jackson Muller 10 for the Dynamos.

Summit Academy 55, Beaver County Christian 53 – Robert Young scored 23 points and Ky’zir Rowan added 16 to lead Summit Academy (8-7, 5-4) to a Section 1-A win. Hunter Mozely hit six 3-pointers and scored 25 points and Rocco DeSarbo added 12 points for Beaver County Christian (10-8, 3-6).

Thomas Jefferson 73, Ringgold 59 – Nick Trklja dropped 21 points, Noah Kaszer added 19 and Kane Eggerton produced 13 as Thomas Jefferson (10-10, 5-6) beat Ringgold (4-14, 0-9) in Section 3-5A. Demetri Lowe put up 19 and Brayden Lomax contributed 12 for the Rams.

Hockey

Burrell 14, Knoch 3 – Luke Mink had three goals and three assists, Julian Kemp added three goals and two assists and Aaron Holm scored twice to lead Burrell (14-2-1) to a Division 2 win. Nick Olshanski had two goals for Knoch (6-9-2).

Butler 6, Hampton 3 – Mason Heichel had two goals and an assist and Lucus Hensler, Seamus Griffith and Brayden Hardsock each added a goal and two assists to lead Butler (4-11-3) to a Class A win. Joey Stephenson scored twice for Hampton (7-11).

Chartiers Valley 7, Wheeling Central Catholic 1 – Noah Callender and Ryan Kumpf each scored a natural hat trick to power Chartiers Valley (16-1) to a Class A win. Calendar also had three assists and Tyler Held tallied a goal for the Colts. Rowan Power scored for Wheeling Central Catholic (7-11-1).

Gateway 6, Wilmington 2 – Canyon Hines scored twice and Gavin Grant, CJ Evans and Beau Ritson each had a goal and an assist for Gateway (9-8-1) in a Division 2 win. Justin Girman scored twice for Wilmington (2-12-1).

Hempfield 6, Penn-Trafford 5 – Nino DiPietro’s second goal was the game winner with five seconds left in regulation to lift Hempfield (5-9-1) to an upset win in Class 2A. Guerin Gardner also scored twice, including the tying goal earlier in the third. Nick Crupie added a goal and an assist and Luke Horrall also scored. Aiden Drotos had two goals and three assists, Cam Kiste also scored twice and Drew Hall added a goal for Penn-Trafford (14-3-1).

Mars 8, North Hills 0 – Jack Weaver and Zavier Bossollo each had a goal and two assists and Grant Weaver, Cooper Stevens and Max Pitkins added a goal and an assist apiece to lead Mars (15-3) past North Hills (10-8) in Class A. Adam Goul made 16 saves.

Meadville 6, Beaver 4 – Robert Mahoney scored four goals to power Meadville (8-9-1) to a Class A win over Beaver (3-12-1-1). Cole Sobolewski and Nick Engels each added a goal for the Bulldogs. Sammy Mecchia recorded a hat trick and Zack Masters added a goal for the Bobcats.

Montour 11, Kiski 1 – Thomas Barefoot collected four goals and two assists, Cole Dallas had a goal and four assists and Aiden Moskovitz added two goals and two assists to power Montour (13-4) to a Class A win. Owen Kowalkowski scored for Kiski (0-17-1).

Moon 6, Wheeling Park 3 – Landon Watson and Clayton Foster each had two goals and an assist and Josh Koren and David Gallup also scored for Moon (15-2-1) in a Class A win. Owen Abrtaham had a goal and an assist and Luke Simonetti dished out three assists for Wheeling Park (10-4-2).

Morgantown 4, Neshannock 3 (SO) – Cooper Cox’s second goal of the game tied the score in the third period to help Morgantown (17-1) to a shootout win in Division 2. Sam Mezzanotte had a goal and an assist for Neshannock (12-3-2).

Mt. Lebanon 5, South Fayette 2 – Griffin Krupp had a goal and four assists, Xavier Bias collected two goals and two assists and Liam Shinn finished with two goals and an assist to send Mt. Lebanon (14-1-2) to a Class 3A win. Ivan Kalinkou and Braydon Reighard scored for South Fayette (8-7-1).

Plum 3, Quaker Valley 2 – Luca Lapiana, Nick Majors and AJ Leah scored third-period goals as Plum (12-7) rallied to hand first-place Quaker Valley (17-1) its first loss of the season. Landon Gribbin-Horner made 32 saves. Jace Vasbinder and Colin York each had a goal and an assist for Quaker Valley.

Shaler 2, Blackhawk 1 (OT) – Lucca Laquatra had a goal and an assist, including the overtime winner, Jacob Skerlong also scored and Jackson Fox made 15 saves to lead Shaler (14-3-1) to a Class A win. Dylan Leiper scored and Benjamin Woods made 20 saves for Blackhawk (9-8-1).

Thomas Jefferson 3, Central Catholic 2 (SO) – Derek Schliebner had a goal and an assist, Lucas Blose also scored and Ronnie Porupsky made 35 saves to lead Thomas Jefferson (9-9) to a Class 3A win. Noah Hritz and Nate Morgan scored and Ben Balla made 31 saves for Central Catholic (8-6-3).
