High school roundup for Jan. 12, 2019: Franklin Regional falls to Kennedy Catholic

Maceo Austin had 27 points, and Oscar Tshibwe added 25 as the state’s No. 1 team in Class 6A, Kennedy Catholic, earned an 85-53 win over Franklin Regional (10-4) in a nonsection boys basketball game.

North Catholic 82, Monessen 70 — Isaac DeGregorio had 28 points as North Catholic (9-3) won a nonsection game.

Devin Whitlock had 23 points for Monessen (6-5), which had its three-game winning streak snapped.

Armstrong 51, Hollidaysburg 50 — Gavin Szymanski hit his fifth 3-pointer of the game with one second left to give Armstrong (3-9) the nonsection win against Hollidaysburg. Szymanski finished with 15 points while teammate Isaiah Price scored a game-high 17 points. Sam Servello led Hollidaysburg with 13 points.

Laurel Highlands 66, Waynesburg 56 — Keandre Cook scored 22 points to lead Laurel Highlands (2-10) to a nonsection win against Waynesburg (6-7). Ileasa Salauca added 12 points for Laurel Highlands while Lucas Garber led Waynesburg with 14 points.

Girls basketball

Peters Township 90, Hempfield 56 — Penn State recruit Makenna Marisa tallied 36 points as No. 2 Peters Township (11-0, 6-0) won a Section 2-6A game.

Emma Hoffner and Sarah Liberatore scored 16 points to lead Hempfield (5-6, 0-6).

Oakland Catholic 59, Gateway 47 — Alexis Sestric scored 22 points and Sierra DeAngelo added 14 points as Oakland Catholic (11-2) defeated Gateway (10-3) in nonsection play. Lexi Jackson and Mary Kromka scored 19 and 14 points, respectively, for Gateway, which had its six-game winning streak snapped.

Ringgold 54, Steel Valley 31 — In nonsection play, Kyela Dungee scored 15 points to lead Ringgold (2-10) to victory against Steel Valley (2-10). Nya Adams added 11 points for Ringgold while teammate Martina Costa had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Ringgold led at halftime, 29-10. Abby Tester scored 13 points in the loss.

Wrestling

The Kiski Cavaliers clinched a Section 1-AAA playoff spot Saturday. The Class AAA top-ranked Cavaliers used six wins, and eight forfeits, as Kiski Area swept section rival Central Catholic, 84-0.

Enzo Morlacci delivered the quickest pin of the day with a 19-second match over the Vikings’ Thomas Muha at 145 pounds. Luke Lacaria (126), Nick Delp (170), Hunter Dilts (182), Troy Kuhn (220) and Stone Jospeh (285) all recorded pins for Kiski Area (8-0).
