High school roundup for Jan. 16, 2025: Blackhawk beats Beaver to stand alone atop section

Aubree Hupp scored 19 points and Trib HSSN Class 4A No. 2 Blackhawk defended its position atop Section 2-4A girls basketball with a 52-31 win over Beaver on Thursday night.
Grace Huston added 11 points for the Cougars (12-2, 6-0), who built a 10-point lead at halftime. Emerson Connelly scored 11 for the Bobcats (11-3, 5-2).
Baldwin 44, Mt. Lebanon 32 – Julianne Ott scored 15 points and Mary Vargo added 10 in a nonsection win for Baldwin (8-7), which trailed by four at halftime. Payton Collins scored 15 for Mt. Lebanon (7-7).
Chartiers Valley 62, West Allegheny 35 – Emma Reynolds scored 11 points and Ava Shazer, Iyla Ozbey and Alyssa Davis added 10 points each to lead Chartiers Valley (10-5, 6-1) past West Allegheny (9-5, 2-5) in Section 3-5A.
Neshannock 49, Central Valley 46 – Payton Newman had 15 points, 14 rebounds and five steals to lead Neshannock (14-2) to a nonsection win. Sophia Bonner added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Lancers. Nyah Hayes scored 13 points and Mia Dinello and Isabella Miller each added 12 for Central Valley (8-4).
OLSH 60, Ellwood City 41 – Led by 15 points from Leah Parker, 14 from Sara Daeschner and 12 from Claudia Ierullo, OLSH (13-2, 8-0) picked up a Section 1-3A win. Caitlin Kreitzer scored 21 for Ellwood CIty (8-6, 4-4).
Boys basketball
Aliquippa 76, Mohawk 43 – Joshua Pratt scored 29 points to lead four players in double figures for Aliquippa (9-3, 6-0) in a Section 1-3A win. Marques Council added 16, Jeremiah Pratt 13 and Qa’lil Goode 10 for the Quips. Bobby Fadden scored 22 points and Drew Wrona added 14 for Mohawk (11-3, 5-1).
Baldwin 59, South Allegheny 52 – Nate Wesling scored 16 points to lead Trib HSSN Class 5A No. 4 Baldwin past Class 3A No. 1 South Allegheny in nonsection action. Baldwin trailed 34-21 at the half before outscoring South Allegheny 20-12 in the third quarter and 18-6 in the fourth. Caden Cherico added 15 points for the Highlanders (13-1). Drew Cook led the Gladiators (13-1) with 28 points.
Chartiers Valley 66, West Allegheny 30 – Jayden Davis scored 22 points and Chartiers Valley (13-1, 6-1) went on a 13-2 run in the second quarter to take control in a Section 4-5A win. Josiah Johnson led West Allegheny (6-9, 2-5) with 10 points.
Hockey
Beaver 4, Westmont Hilltop 3 – Trevor Schmidt scored the game-winning goal with four seconds left in regulation to power Beaver (4-9-1) to a Class A win. Sammy Mecchia scored the tying goal earlier in the third. Zack Masters and Aidan Natali also scored for Beaver. Colby Carson scored twice and Brett Hoffman added a goal for Westmont Hilltop (1-14-1).
Bishop McCort 7, Norwin 1 – Sammy Treager scored a hat trick and added an assist, Mikaels Vasilevskis scored twice and Mark Pazniak had a goal and two assists to lead Bishop McCort (6-8-1) to a Class 2A win. Mason Hohman scored for Norwin (1-12-1).
Blackhawk 3, McDowell 0 – Dylan Leiper had two goals and an assist, Grant Shroads added a goal and an assist and Matthew Hofer made 36 saves to lead Blackhawk (8-6) to a Class A win over McDowell (5-9).
Central Valley 4, Bishop Canevin 3 – Treyton Palocsik’s second goal was the game-winner with 30 seconds left in regulation to lift Central Valley (5-10) to a Division 2 win. Mikey Crea had a goal and three assists and Logan Sullivan added a goal and an assist for Central Valley. Brian Kalanish had a goal and an assist and Dom Ventura and Jayden Martincic also scored for Bishop Canevin (8-8).
Neshannock 4, Ringgold 1 – John Monoides had a goal and an assist, Will Klinchloe, Sam Heming and Ben Hamilton also scored and Tripp Johns made 20 saves for Neshannock (10-3-1) in a Division 2 win. Bruce Santina scored and Braidee Blackburn made 34 saves for Ringgold (10-5).
Thomas Jefferson 5, Seneca Valley 2 – Liam Mahoney scored twice, Cam Lorenzi had a goal and an assist and Lucas Blose dished out three assists for Thomas Jefferson (8-9) in Class 3A. Owen Michael and Paul Guenther also scored for TJ. Braden Moran and Ryan Campbell scored for Seneca Valley (10-2).
